On 4th Dec until 11th Dec 2015, the team has gone to Langkawi National Observatory (LNO) for data collection. We received a very warm welcomed from the LNO staffs and officers. Our team have a wonderful time in Langkawi. The people were friendly and helpful, the environment is peaceful with beautiful scenery and pleasant surrounding. We really enjoy the trip and learn a lot.

LNO Briefing

An introduction to LNO was given by Mr. Karzaman, the science officer who are experts in astrophotography. We were briefly explained about the research activities in LNO, accommodations and instruments available. We also taught on the basic theory of the instruments.

We were grateful to have fruitful discussion with the expert astrophotographer. We learned a lot from him and we really hope to have collaboration with him in the future.

Discussion on Future Collaboration

Discussion on the book publication

The trip to LNO was a golden opportunity to our team as we were able to discuss the potential collaboration with research officers from LNO and ANGKASA. We are looking forward to have MoU and MoA with ANGKASA on this matter. We are very pleased to have a collaboration with ANGKASA, a renowned and reputable agency in Malaysia.

Radio Signal Data Collection

Radio signal observation

Radio observation was done throughout the week for 24 hour (24-7) starting from 4 December 2015 until 10 December 2015. Using spectrum analyzer, radio signal was collected and weather condition was keep updated using weather station from LNO. This observation was conducted to monitor the radio signal attenuation at LNO.

Stellar Observation

Throughout this trip, we also got chance to learn how to observe and take the snapshot picture of stars and nebulae with guidance from Mr. Karzaman. We were also taught on location determination of stars using star map and the name of stars and constellations. The most precious experience with Mr. Karzaman was conducting real time observation using telescope, and got a chance to do the photo editing techniques to get a high quality image.

Solar Observation

Solar observation was also done during the trip. Telescope system for solar observation was made up of TMB-Apo, 152/1200-CNC tube, Coronado SolarMax, 70 CaK, Takahashi FSQ-106, filters such as H-alpha, Calcium K line, sets of camera and CCD video camera.

Students were briefed about solar observation before learnt on how to use PC to capture solar activity during real time at solar observatories. Some of the items from LNO were used by our team under supervision of research officer, Mr. Redzuan and Mrs. Farahana. We also have an opportunity to discuss with Mr. Long and Ms. Rafidah on LNO activities and researches conducted.

Sky Brightness Monitoring

During the whole week, we have done an observation on sky brightness using sky quality meter (SQM). Three days observation were done during night hour after doing some testing on the devices. Another SQM from ONL was used to compare the data obtained during the same observation. The observation was conducted at the roof top near solar dome.

Article and Book Writing

LNO library - team members were focussing on their article write up

One of our aim in this LNO trip was to finish up the manuscript for journal publication and book in electromagnetic research field. All participants of this trip was required to contribute one chapter per person in book publication, and one journal manuscript each. The book publication was lead by Dr. Khairul Amri, who has a lot of experience in book and journal editing process. The journal write up process was conducted by Dr. Hazmin and Dr. Roslan.

Leisure Activities

Boat trip on Island Hopping

During our precious time in LNO, we have had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Langkawi Island by doing some outdoor activities, tours and shopping. We went to Mahsuri mausoleum, Skycab, island hopping and many more.
