Abstract
I will explore the application of recent work in metaphysics on grounding and fundamentality to the question of how ’strong’ a variety of emergence is needed to secure a commitment to freedom of the will. I will argue that what is required is a variety that can underwrite the claim that human persons, while wholly physically composed, are fundamental sources of causal influence. Prima facie, this is a deeply puzzling idea. I will try to make it less puzzling.
