We invite submissions of long abstracts for the conference “Emergence and Causation”, that will be held in Macerata (Italy) on September 23-25, 2015.
The conference is part of the project “Causal Relata, Mental Causation and Downward Causation”, which takes place at the University of Macerata and is generously funded by The John Templeton Foundation and Durham University within the fellowship programme connected with the Durham Emergence Project (visit: www.emergenceinmacerata.it).
Confirmed speakers include: Mario De Caro (Rome), Sophie C. Gibb (Durham), Simone Gozzano (L’Aquila), John Heil (Washington University at St. Louis), Robin Hendry (Durham), Erasmus Mayr (Oxford), Timothy O'Connor (Indiana), Francesco Orilia (Macerata), Michele Paolini Paoletti (Macerata), Scott Sturgeon (Birmingham).
The topics of the conference include:
- the possibility of emergence;
- the varieties of emergence;
- strong emergence and downward causation;
- the relata of causation;
- agent causation;
- emergence and mental causation.
Abstracts should be prepared for anonymous review and they should be submitted together with a separate cover page containing the following details about the author: name, position, affiliation, address, e-mail address. Moreover, abstracts should not exceed 1500 words and all the arguments should be made clear, in order for the contributions to be evaluated. Each accepted contributor will have 1 hour: approximately, 45 minutes for the presentation and 15 minutes for the discussion. She will be provided with free meals and accommodation for the duration of the conference and her travel expenses will be covered for a maximum of 400 euros. It is expected that 2 or 3 abstracts will be selected.
