Generators

Generators are a great way to increase range on an electric boat. They are noisy, carbon-spewing and smelly - but they will get you home. Ideal for larger vessels (and owners with more money) are dedicated built-in marine diesel gensets. These are typically AC units, and you'd use your regular chargers to charge the batteries while underway.

Another popular option is the use of portable gasoline generators (ALWAYS on deck - never below.) such as the Honda EU2000 or EU3000 series. I mention these specifically because their owners often rave about both their low noise levels and their reliability. These should be firmly mounted in a dedicated space on deck, out of the way of normal traffic, and care should be taken that they are properly grounded. There is also an implicit assumption that no wind means calm seas, and that is not always true.

I am currently using an inexpensive portable generator, but plan on upgrading to the EU3000 soon as mine is quite noisy.
