Wells, Water Treatment

If you need a well, start with a dowser -- Egremonter Craig Elliott (528-3827). He's excellent! and he can probably recommend a driller, too. (6/15)

For a 20-page list of registered well drillers, see the MA-DEP list: www.mass.gov/eea/docs/dep/water/drinking/alpha/a-thru-h/drillers.pdf.   Whomever you chose, make sure they are registered in the state of Mass.

Consensus is that the cheapest, most effective, and most sustainable treatment is UV. Installers:

On treating hard water, conditioning, and/or filter systems:

"I have had very noticeable improvement by installing a magnetic water conditioner. I originally scoffed at this as snake oil, but tried it on the recommendation of a consulting engineer friend. It consists of attaching powerful magnets to the pipe of your incoming water supply (which certainly sounds like snake oil). It does not reduce the level of water hardness but significantly reduced the scaling on fixtures. There are several brands on Amazon, I used the Magnetic Water Technology whole house model."

AND:

"We've had excellent results from a system by WaterSoft Inc that filters out metals and other impurities from our well water. Our system was installed over 20 years ago by Ustico Plumbing (Canaan, CT), and we just change the filter periodically to keep it running well. Water Soft offers different units to address different water issues, so you would need to do some research to find the right one for your condition." http://www.watersoftinc.com/products

AND:

"We got a reverse osmosis water filter (mfrd by Apec Water) for under the kitchen sink, in addition to the softening system we have for the whole house.  You can order it online but it takes a plumber to install and you need to drill a hole in your countertop behind or next to the sink for a separate spigot.  In addition, it's bulky, taking up about half the under-sink storage space.  Anyway, it seems to significantly improve the taste of the water."
