Into - Through - Beyond
This is a universal concept that should be applied everyday for each lesson. It applies to every chapter in a book. It applies to an entire unit of study. How do you get students INTO the lesson, chapter or unit? How do you get them THROUGH it? Getting through a novel can be quite daunting for the inexperienced or recalcitrant reader. Do you have students who just will not read? (We all do! Whether you teach in a low performing or an high performing community, we ALL have non-readers. How do we get them through the literature? What happens BEYOND? Beyond is the "so what?" - this is the difference between wasting the period, week, or the last few months and achieving or goals and having our lessons make an impact of our students' lives.
This is applicable for nearly EVERY thing that happens in a classroom. How did you begin the school year? the lesson? the poem? the novel? the essay? Realize that unless you teach Kindergarten or Seniors, you are part of a long process. Each part of the process has an identifiable beginning, middle and end.
