Recent displacements of Hmong-Mien, etc. In southern Yunnan, many ethnic groups are in fact recent arrivals due to displacements during the Ming and Qing dynasties; this is why Blench's "Southern Yunnan Interaction Sphere" (SYIS) must be discounted. Rather, these phyla came to interact with each other in a much larger region, i.e. throughout the entire expanse of southern China.
