Be My Eyes Basic Guide
Be My Eyes is available for both iOS and Android devices. To get started:
Go to the App Store (for iPhone) or Google Play Store (for Android).
Search for Be My Eyes and download the app.
Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions to create an account.
Once the app is installed, you will be prompted to set up your profile:
Choose Your Role: Select whether you want to use the app as a blind or low-vision user or a sighted volunteer.
If you are a blind or low-vision user, the app will connect you to volunteers who can assist you.
If you are a sighted volunteer, you will receive calls from users needing help.
Select Your Language: Be My Eyes supports multiple languages. Choose your preferred language for communication.
The app connects blind or low-vision users with sighted volunteers via live video calls, allowing the volunteers to "see" through the user’s phone camera and provide assistance.
For Blind or Low-Vision Users:
To request help:
Open the Be My Eyes app and tap on the Call First Available Volunteer button.
The app will initiate a video call with a sighted volunteer.
Point your phone's rear camera at the item or situation you need help with.
The volunteer will guide you by describing what they see through the camera.
For Sighted Volunteers:
When a blind or low-vision user requests assistance, you will receive a notification.
Answer the call by tapping on the notification.
You will see a live video feed from the user’s phone camera and help them based on what you see.
Be My Eyes can be used in a variety of situations where visual information is needed, including:
Reading Labels: Volunteers can help read labels on food, medication, or household items.
Identifying Objects: Volunteers can assist in identifying items such as colors of clothing or sorting through mail.
Navigating New Environments: Volunteers can help with navigation by describing surroundings.
Assisting with Technology: Volunteers can provide visual assistance with troubleshooting technology (e.g., setting up a computer or phone).
Be My Eyes also offers a Specialized Help section, where users can get assistance from professional representatives from various companies or services, such as Microsoft or Google.
To Use Specialized Help:
In the Be My Eyes app, tap the Specialized Help button.
Choose from the list of available companies.
Make a call to get assistance directly from a company representative trained to assist blind or low-vision users.
For Blind or Low-Vision Users: You can make a call for help at any time, and the app will connect you to the first available volunteer.
For Sighted Volunteers: You will receive notifications when a user needs help. If you are unavailable, the call will go to the next volunteer on the list, so you don’t need to worry about missing a call.
For Blind or Low-Vision Users:
Describe your problem clearly when you connect with a volunteer so they can assist you effectively.
Ensure your camera is aimed properly at the object you need help with by adjusting your phone's position.
For Sighted Volunteers:
Be patient and clear in your explanations. It may take some time for the user to adjust the camera to show you what they need.
Be aware of time zones and availability when receiving calls.
Video Only: The app uses only video, not text or photos, and the video is not stored, ensuring privacy for both parties.
No Personal Information: Volunteers do not have access to users' personal information, maintaining a safe and secure experience for everyone involved.
