Project 2: Digital Game

In groups of 5-7 students, design and create a digital game (2D or 3D). Use an engine or editor the group feels the most comfortable with: Unity, Unreal, Godot, PyGame, mygamebuilder, GameMaker, etc. something else or even a mod. You will be graded on the GDD, concept/design, innovation, fun, execution and polish. The focus is on having a completed game using mechanics and design decisions learned in the class.

  • Due Each Week: Scrum presentation & Project Production Journal (PPJ). Scrum and PPJ should cover past (what you did and who did what), present (evaluate success and obstacles), and future (what you are going to do and who is doing what), with task assignments, asset reviews, etc. Sell Presentation also due each week.

  • Due Week 6: 5-page concept paper. See Resource Files link for examples.

  • Due Week 7: Initial minimal prototype with placeholder assets for playtesting. Production Journal. Playtest Questionnaire (preferably online connected to spreadsheet, such as a Google Docs Form)

  • Due Week 8: Alpha.

  • Due Week 9: Beta. Closed beta (20+ testers). Playtest results.

  • Due Week 10: Beta + 80/20 rule. Open beta (40+ testers). Playtest results.

  • Finals Week: Launch materials:

      • Game build(s) for both PC and Mac (maybe web build too)

      • Sell presentation

      • Scrum presentations

    • Archive (flash drive or dropbox zip, etc.) of all above material along with all game source project.

    • Team post-mortem (3 good, 3 bad)

    • Team member reviews.
