Home of Playland by the Sea, Pacifica is an upper class residential area nestled between the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean and Rancho Coronado. Playland is a hit among the amusement park crowd from San Francisco, and brings a fair amount of tourist traffic up from the south. On the cliffs at Pacifica are the expensive home/condos of the Coastview development, offering a view of both the open sea, and for some a view of the bright lights of Playland itself. The entire area has the more relaxed attitude of SoCal and prides itself in being the only place in the Night City Area where one can truly relax.
With the influxs into Coastview and Westwind Pacifica has a thriving small-trendy business vibe, with cocktail bars run by ex solos, sound studios and music shops by former medias and rockerboys and numerous other (mostly) legal enterprises run by those who had given up the fight, but couldn’t quite bring themselves to sell out and collect the corporate paycheck. If course it has pleanty of upcoming Corpzones too who have climbed the greasy pole high enough to escape the beaverville of Rancho Conando, but haven’t quite made the richness of Westbrook.
The security in Pacifica isn’t nearly as draconian as Westbrook, though smarting somewhat because it used to be a Militech exclusive contract, but has now been turned over to Corpsec as a whole. Playland brings in a large crowd and security in the area is pretty lax – it is not unknown for juves or the even remnants of the city’s gangs to have a party on the beach and only be reminded to keep the noise down after 11. On the other hand if they try to move that party towards Coastview they can expect to be arrested or shot in pretty short order.
Pacifica is also known for having the best seafood in the Night City area. Almost all the restaurants have made the top ten lists in their respective fields. Pacifica is also home to several galleries and museums as well as a small and fairly prestigious art college.
Pacifica attracts all sorts of Juves who are / want to be hip and trendy. From glitterkids to mallrats. Unsurprisingly Westwind is a haven for Rads and the Pacifica Archology is an arcorunners dream. The Revolution is keen to make this area an active media front, as it probably has the highest percentage of residents who are likely to listen to the message and do something about it. With a high percentage of edgerunners it leads to a high incidence of Edge cells, as former edgerunner children catch the plague.
A small beaverville located about 2 miles from the ocean, Westwind advertises a beachfront view (possible with a telescope). Westwind is a community torn – originally it was home to younger corporate techies and engineers, with on the surface a liberal, enlightened environment, and underneath an entrenched Orwellian political and social agenda, the mid 2020’s saw a large influx of retiring edgerunners who weren’t successful enough to buy into Coastview as it was seen as the best option of somewhere not directly under the corporate boot who couldn’t afford to live the high life. Edgerunners not taking well to authority tensions escalated rapidly – up until now the ideologically incorrect had been in small enough numbers to be driven out, now there were lots of them, and more than a few were well armed.
This has left Westwind split with some districts still deeply entrenched in an almost marxist view, while others swinging to the other end of the spectrum. In the end, fear of things getting out of hand (and bringing the wrath of Corpsec down like an angry parent on squabbling children) has forced the sides to get along, just resenting each other a bit. Westwind has a number of local art festivals, bookstores and many community events.
Technically most Westwind is an outside zone, and so patrolled by regular police, because much as the locals don’t trust the police, they trusted the corps even less.
An expensive complex of individual beachhouses, apartments and recreation centres, protected by a somewhat draconian security contract. When edgerunners got tired of the fast life in the City and wanted a quiet but trendy place to settle in, this is where they went. With the coming of the ISA this only intensified and many of the most successful edgerunners moved here when they jacked in the battle against the man. (Those who were either still legal enough, or who could disappear and reappear with a new identity anyway).
Coastview is patrolled very carefully by Corpsec, ostensibly because the original area security contract was very strict, now because they realise that many of the residents are potential revolutionaries given sufficient encouragement.
Originally a run down amusement park. Playland was bought in 2007 by the Tower of Dark corporation, an investment cartel from Southern California and they created a new park using the latest in braindance technology. The Park has grown from this humble beginning to a major NorCal amusement centre, featuring group braindance entertainments, virtuality perks, exhibits and the most amazing carnival rides the advanced technology of the 21st century can offer.
On the towering beachside cliffs four miles south of the centre of Pacifica stands the fortress-like sprawl of the Pacifica archology. Built by foreign investors fleeing the collapse of Hong Kong in 1999, the archology is a mega-building ten times the size of the New Harbour Mallplex, housing almost 100,000 people in its 7 square miles. At over 20 years old and massive, the pacifica archology is arcorunner nirvana – there are so many miles of corridors, pipes and forgotten spaces that nobody knows all of it any more.
