Over the summer, students should do preparation work for the senmon sougou kouza, including reading about indigenous rights, refugees and migrants, and gender and sexual diversity in Australia, and English self-study.

The senmon sougo koza pre-departure course in the autumn semester at Chuo has two parts:

1. A class that meets once a week in period 5 on Wednesdays period 5 that includes: (a) mini-lectures and discussions (on theories, ways of doing research, and issues for thinking critically about human rights, civil society and diversity) – mainly in Japanese; (b) presentations by students of their learning and research about human rights, civil society and diversity in Japan and Australia - in English

2. A weekly sub-zemi that meets for one period each week (at a time to be decided with the participants) in which students explain and discuss in English their learning and research.

The senmon sougo koza in the autumn semester is divided into three Active Learning Cycles (ALCs):

Between the end of the senmon sougo koza in January and going to Australia in February/March, students continue to meet together and spend time planning and arranging their fieldwork activities in Sydney.
