Google My Maps

Google My Maps Help

Google My Maps Create Map

This is the end product for displaying information to the public. Google My Maps can be custom styled and embedded into a website. You create a My Maps in your Google Account by either going to My Maps or creating one from Google Drive and storing it in your Google Drive Folders.

To embed a My Maps in your website, open the tools dialog box, click on "embed on my site," copy the HTML code and use the iframe to embed on your website (like the one above it is live and interactive).

You can also export the map as a KML file that can be imported into Google Earth Pro or a Google Fusion Table (and can be used in ESRI ArcMap). You can export a KML file for the entire map, or using the dropdown you can export KML files for individual layers.

Google Spreadsheet Form

Google Drive Form Help

Use this QR Code to call up the Google Form on your mobile device to enter information into the form.

Google Forms can be used to input data from your field work or to solicit input from the public. All of the information from a Google Form automatically goes to a Google Spreadsheet of responses, and all entries have a date and time stamp. Forms can be shared by embedding in an email, embedding in a website, or called up on a mobile device using a QR Code like the one provided here.

Google Forms Response Spreadsheet

View and Manage Form Responses Help

This is the spreadsheet that is automatically created to track responses from the Google Form. It can be kept private and easily sorted to look for incorrect responses, duplicates, etc. before the data are mapped. It can also be imported into a Google Fusion Table for additional functionality and use of the Fusion Table Mapper.

Google Fusion Table Database

Google Fusion Table Help

It is very simple to export data from the Response Spreadsheet into a Google Fusion Table. Fusion Tables are a database with added functionality for tracking large amounts of information. Fusion Tables have an automatic mapper which provides you with visualizations of your data. It is a simple step to link a Fusion Table Map to a My Map to increase your styling options. Fusion Tables have a great deal more capabilities for sorting, filtering, and analyzing information compared to the data table in My Maps, however, Fusion Tables do not have all the styling capabilities of My Maps for custom icons, etc. Using Google Forms (Response Spreadsheet), Google Fusion Tables (FT Mapper), and Google My Maps as a linked set of tools provides you with a great deal of functionality without the need to code.

Additional Functionality can be added to all of these Google GeoTools using the Drive API and Maps API (requires coding).

Create a Map with Google Fusion Tables Help

This is the map produced from the Fusion Table Database above. Since the Fusion Table was made with KML exported from the My Maps rather than from a Google Spreadsheet, the location data are in the form of KML files. You can also use street addresses or Lat/Long for the location data in a Fusion Table (but all location data have to have the same format within a Fusion Table in order to map them).
