MyMaps

Google My Maps is a free geotool that can be used to create map layers that can be shared with others and embedded in a website. It was formerly called "Google Maps Engine Lite" and recently replaced the classic Google My Places. The layers that you create are stored in the cloud, however, they are only viewable by going to your map, if you submit it to the gallery, by sharing it with collaborators, or embedding it in a website (it is not part of the Google basemap).

The map below was created using MyMaps Pro from BIT data provided by the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Environmental Programs Department. The BIT data layer was downloaded as a CSV file and uploaded into My Maps and styled according to whether or not there are institutional controls in place (the different colored pins correspond to yes, no, and no data). Reservation boundaries were uploaded as KML files.

You can click on the layers icon in the upper left corner of the map to turn on and off layers.

You can use this link to view the same map viewed using the Google Map (rather than My Map) viewer. The layers are not uploaded to the Google Map basemap - you have to have the link to go to this map layer which is stored in my Google Account and view it as a custom map (access can be restricted). The value of using the Google Map viewer is that it allows you to use Street View, Photospheres, and other immersive tools to get a closer look at each location. The image on the left is an interactive street view of the Ute Mountain Casino and Resort in Cortez, Colorado.
