EMM CDSA-SE
This is one box player which plays CD and stereo SACD.
It also playes MP3 - but i'm not sure how important it is for this player's target audience....
It's built quite good. But if you look "tank like" quality of Wadia or top Sony/Esoteric - forget about it.
It's ergonomics are pretty awfull - display has only one mode and it responds only to half of buttins pressings.
But when it plays - it's pretty much magic...........
You don't get here no euphonic character, meety cymbals, rich strings or huge sound.
Instead it's super precise, very natural, absolutely holographic, unbelievably detailed, hugely dynamic, very energetyc and wonderfully defined bass notes.
Clynical? Sterile?
Hell NO!!!!
It's so fun and so involving whithout sounding romantic and whithout spilling honey from the tweeters.
My CD players history:
Meridian G08 CD player
A really good RBCD player.
I think it provides terrific value for its 4,500$ price.
It very very detailed, good soundstage, deep and powerfull bass, fluid sound with absolutely no "digital artefacts".
I compared it to few other players, including much more expensive ones, and G-08 was either better or compared very respectfully.
I think that in CD area almost 30 years of Meridian's expirience really pays out.
It's not that much behind EMM sonicwise and actually have the same neutral, detailed and dynamic character.
It looks really neat in the dark with those blue lights between buttons:
Its remote control is very smart, backlighted and programmable.
I never liked Meridian remote controlls because they are not really "hendheld" and more "tabletop" stile.
So i ditched it and use my trusty Marantz RC2000 universal remote.
REMEMBER !!!!
To open a disc tray / eject a disc from a remote you have to press "Funcion" and "Stop" buttons together.
On old (black) Meridian remote controll i think "Function" button is called "Shift".
Sony DVP-S9000es SACD player
It also looks cool at dark:
In fact it also plays CD, DVD and even DAD.
Sonic qaulity is very good for SACD.
Comparing to much more robust and expensive SCD-777es it sounds pretty similar.
In CD its sonic are not that great. I think raving reviews exaggerated too much.
It's OK but hard to say whether it's good enough for 1,200$ player.
For the 300$ used it's definitely good.
As all early Sony SACD players - this one also have a bad reputation for laser pickup going wrong.
It usually starts with player not being able to play Super Audio CD layer of hybrid discs.
Mine worked OK for all 8 years i owned it - but just in case i bought for 25$ a spare laser pickup - Sony part# KHM-220AAA.
