Mail List

Improtant! If you're happy with the list as it was, just receiving and replying to messages, there's no need to do anything.

Also note that in Feb 2015 the list changed so the replies now go to sender, not the list. This was a solution to a problem caused by Yahoo. It's reduced the usefulness of our list, which was probably the aim.

The place to go to read the archives, or change settings is https://listserv.heanet.ie/ but you'll need to read some of this first!

The cork home-ed mailing list is using listserv software, and is hosted on heanet.ie. Special thanks go to them and to the Professional Development Service for Teachers (the PDST you can see in the message headers).

• A comprehensive subscriber's manual is available to download as a pdf or view as webpages. What's here should be enough for you to use it though.
• The list is private, i.e. there is no public access to the list itself , the archives, nor to its list of addresses. Membership is by invitation, usually via an existing list member. Even members cannot view the subscriber list.
• By default I set it to send you a copy of your own message as confirmation, but you can change it to a short acknowledgement or no acknowledgement at all (see below).

Some of you expressed a desire not to have all the messages come to your inbox, and we made a second list to accommodate that. With the new list there are better options. Now we are back to one list, but you can easily change your settings to minimize the number of messages you get.. If you do nothing, the list will operate in much the same way as the old list did.

List Options

You can customize the list options to suit you:

• Temporarily disable delivery of messages (e.g. if you're going away for a while)
• Set messages to be delivered in one digest or index per day
• Set a password so you can use the web interface
• Control various aspects of the messages you receive.

The video below shows how you can change your settings. If you unsubscribed from the old "discuss" list and wish to get fewer emails, the best option is probably to change you subscription to a daily index message, which is just a list of the subject headers of the list messages for the last 24 hours. The index contains links to the messages on the website, where you can view messages, reply to them or start a new message. To avoid the web interface, set your subscription to a daily digest, which has all the messages in it. But please take care when replying to a digest message, in case you quote the whole lot back to the list!

Setting Your Password.

The first time you log in to the list website ( http://listserv.heanet.ie/ ), you'll need to set a password. After that you'll be able to log in anytime.

Click "log in" at the top right

Click on "get a new password"

Fill in the password form

Enter your email address, followed by the password (twice to avoid errors). Then click "register password".

Check your email inbox

Listserv will send you a confirmation link. Go to your email, and click the link (or copy and paste into your browser window).

You should get a message window, saying "Your new password was registered successfully". Now you can log in.

Log in

Just enter your address and the password you chose, then click "log in".

Logged in

You can always see if you're logged in successfully. Your email address should be shown at the top left of the window.

Setting your preferences

There are some useful preferences you could set, like making the default logged-in page more useful, and enabling tutorial mode.

Click on "preferences" at the top right.

Change your start page

The default start page is the list of all Heanet's public mailing lists, which isn't much use because our list is not public anyway. To make the default page more useful, change it to "subscriber's corner", which will have a link to the home-ed list.

Enable tutorial mode

Tutorial mode will add useful tips on using the interface.

Help buttons

Use the help (?) buttons next to features. They will pop up a small window with a description of the function.

Submit Changes

Remember to click "submit" or the changes will not be saved!
