Since using the wiki here it's becoming clearer what we really need. If we make a list of what's useful and what's missing, maybe it would help in defining exactly what features we want?

Good:

  • Ability to make pages with subpages to act as headers and subheaders to aid in finding what interests you.
    • Discussion available for each page
  • Relatively easy to use

Missing:

    • Ability to have fine control over privacy of posts.
    • Simple login to access all features (adding image slideshow for example requires use of google+ which is fine if you want all the photos public in your google+ profile).

We could have pretty much anything we want with an installation of buddypress (wordpress with added forums, groups etc) but it would take a bit more expertise than I have occasionally because some of the installation is a bit weird. E.g. when I turn on the forums, either nothing happens or I get two sets of forums, and error messages are like Linux (sorry that's the only way I can describe it because that's the only place I've seen such geeky errors, where you need to understand what's gone wrong already in order to understand the error message, and when you go to the help forums people respond with myriad variations of "read the fsckin manual", or something even more obscure than the original error message) erm... lost my thread there...

Anyway, could Robin help out a bit with the initial set up? We don't need any hosting, we already have that free, and maybe also help any of the kids who would like to learn how to run a website? That would be worth paying for anyway, if anyone wants to learn it.
