Meals

As part of the spirit of the Field School, meals will be eaten together as we usually do when when we are conducting field research. The two parts of field research that can be the distracting, cause unnecessary disruptions, and slow the work down the most are food preparation and laundry. Therefore, during this Field School there is an attempt to minimize problems associated with these two activities.

Please note carefully that an individual's food habits must not become an issue that wastes time. We expect adult behavior which recognizes that not every personal preference can be satisfied while working as a group under field conditions.

We do recognize that some people have specific food issues, such as allergies. Please notify the instructors as soon as you register for the courses if you have any food allergies or religious limitations so that these can be accommodated.

The money collected for food (as part of the Field School fee) is pooled and food is purchased locally.

We have minimal food-storage facilities, so we expect that all food will be consumed or discarded each day. This is important for food safety and it is a regular practice when working under field conditions.

Meal Preparation

Breakfast

A standard fare of food will be available so that a minimum of time is spent in preparation, consumption and clean-up. The breakfast period will be used for class activities, so everyone will need to be particularly efficient. The bottom line: nobody gets to cook food for breakfast.

Lunch

A sack lunch will be the standard fare. Items such as fruits and energy bars will be available for selection. This will be efficient and allow us to have needed mobility.

Dinner

The Field School will cater foods for the evening meal from an outstanding kitchen on Kaua`i. We expect the meals to be interesting and to reflect a number of the cultures of the Kaua'i residents.

Note that the Field School sites will not have kitchens. We will provide ample water, juices, ....[coffee, tea???]

Sanitation and Clean-up

Bugs exist. We don't want to encourage them. Do not leave any food lying around or in unsealed containers.

Everyone is expected to help with clean-up.
