Saturday: Photography Assignment

Background

Conservation organizations often focus on saving charismatic species, such as the giant panda and bald eagle. The public is drawn to the images of these species. Botanical gardens, with few exceptions, don't have such popular images that will create strong emotions. Or maybe they do, but just have not discovered them.

Assignment

Students work in teams of 2 or 3 and establish half-hour trade-offs with the DSLR cameras. Penalties may be assessed for anyone seen to be "non-cooperative." However, all slide shows are done individually.

It is expected that teams will be doing some critique during the photo shoot part of this exercise. Cooperation helps everyone.

Create a slide show with:

  • 1 title slide that has a few words which introduces the theme of your slide show.
  • 10 images that provoke emotion.

Constraints:

  • All photos must be taken in the garden.
  • A maximum of 3 previously taken slides from the garden may be used.
  • A four hour time limit is established for taking the photos in the garden on Saturday.
  • All submissions must be completed by 4 PM on Saturday.
  • All slide shows will be run without any comment or narration.

Judging:

  • The course instructors will announce the winners.

Expect that all the slide shows will be given to the garden for their use.
