Laundry

Laundry is the second task, after meals, that wastes time during field research. Accordingly, we want to minimize the time spent on this activity.

Plan on enough clothing for about a one week period (eight days is good).

• At a field school of this type it is appropriate to wear the same clothing more than once.
• For the sake of your field mates keeping clean and odor-free is a must and over rides the wearing clothing on more than one occassion rule.
• This is not a fashion show, but modest dress is appropriate.

For laundry, students are encouraged to apply the following general principles. Bring clothing that is:

• Easy to wash by hand in cold water and then line dry
• Light weight: often semi-synthetic or synthetic
• Color fast: easily mixed together if washed in a machine (one load can wash everything)
• Wrinkle-resistant: no-ironing needed, can be rolled, stuffed, etc.

The camp staff will be collecting dirty laundry that needs to be washed once each week. It will usually be taken away in the morning and returned in the same evening barring problems. Sew or write your name into each item of clothing since clothes will be washed and dried in bulk and returned to the camp in large piles sorted only as "male" and "female."
