Kiso means fundamental. These are 11 pre-arranged partner techniques (waza) used for beginning sparring (kumite) training. Cecil T. Patterson, who started the first Wado dojo in North America, in 1957, created the Kiso series.
The two main aspects of the 11 Kisos are distance (ma-ai) and timing. Body Shifting (tai sabaki) is also introduced in the Kisos. Kisos build strength, coordination, and reflexive thinking.
