Kihons , (Kihon Gumite) are the next progression from the Kisos and focus on the basic techniques of partner sparring and close-in combat techniques. Kihons 1-10 were created by Master Otsuka from his Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu background. Kihons 11+ are unique to our school, and continue to advance the kihon principles of nagasu, noru, inasu, irimi, maai, etc...
17-35 are kata based.
One (Ipponme)
Attacker (Tori): Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Step right foot over and inside defender's right foot and do a left chudan gyaku-tsuki. Roll back, left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps starting left over right to finish.
Defender (Uke): Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. As attacker steps across, bring back left leg up into left mashomen neeko ashi dachi. As attacker executes a gyaku-tsuki, twist the hips clockwise 45°, performing a right burn block, and a left chudan upper cut. Push off at shoulder, left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Two (Nihonme)
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Step up right chudan yokogeri. After being blocked, land in parallel sheeko dachi with back to Defender. After being countered, roll counterclockwise into diagonal kame dachi, right foot in back, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. Pull back as kick is launched, deflecting it to the right, and as it lands explode forward shifting all of your weight and momentum into a three point attack landing your right knee inside the attacker's right knee, your left hand doing a shotei to the attacker's lower back, and your right arm doing a ippon seikan strike to the back of the right shoulder with the arm at an elevated angle so as to cover the face from any potential counter strike. The push off into kame dachi, left foot in back, then 4 steps to finish.
Three (Sanbonme)
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Pull back right foot and launch a back leg mae geri. After being countered, roll back with left foot in back, into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. As kick is launched, quickly pull back, hands coming to hips, and explode forward, right leg in front, doing a three point counter, with left hand doing a palm up seikan block to inside of attacker's kicking leg, right hand over left doing a palm up low chudan upper cut, and head doing a high chudan headbutt. Push away from attacking position, rolling back into kame dachi with left foot in back, then 4 steps to finish.
Four (Yonhonme)
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Left jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Slip forward, with jodan gyaku-tsuki. After being countered, roll back, right leg in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. As gyaku-tsuki is delivered, do a right twisting, shooto ude uke, almost 45°, while leaning head back out of the way. Then explode forward with the right foot in front, transferring the energy of the shooto ude uke into a shooto strike to the right upper arm of the attacker, while simultaneously doing a right ippon seikan uppercut to the armpit and rolling the attacker up and back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Five (Gohonme)
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Left jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Slip forward, with chudan gyaku-tsuki. After being countered, you will end up on the ground. Roll over and up into a position facing the defender, with the left leg straight and resting on the heel, sitting on the right leg. Stand up into masuba dachi. Step counterclockwise 4 steps to defender's starting position, then counterclockwise 5 steps back to your starting position.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. As gyaku-tsuki is delivered, do a downward ude uke rolling the block into your stomach, while grabbing the attacker's punch with your left hand. Do a right face backfist, lift up your grabbing left arm, opening up the body, and do a step-in right empi to the chest. Follow this by taking your right hand and adding it to the grabbing left hand, and pull the person to the high right, faking as if you are going to throw in that direction, then immediately twist the wrist counterclockwise and bring it into your chest, while stepping back and around counterclockwise with your left leg creating an armlock throw, bringing the attacker down. Maintaining the two-handed grab, do a step-up rib kick under and in line with the held arm, then pulling the arm back into the knee, and riding the arm to the ground with the knee. Remove your right arm and do a face punch, replacing it at the held arm’s elbow, then swing your right leg back behind you and out of the way, followed by an outward and upward fling of the opponent, which will cause them to roll over. As you roll them, assume a kame dachi with right leg in the back, and wait until they rise and step into masuba dachi as they do. Then do 4 steps counterclockwise to their starting place, followed by 5 steps counterclockwise back to your starting position.
Six
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Left jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Step up left chudan yokogeri. After being blocked, land in parallel sheeko dachi facing Defender, launching a right gyaku-tsuki as you land. After being countered, drop back into kame dachi, left foot in back, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. As kick is launched, pull back and do a gedan ashi nagasha uke, then left step forward and do a body shifting counter strike as in kihon #1, with a right haishu-'goose block', and a left chudan uppercut. Then put left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Seven
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Left jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Pull back, and launch a right chudan mae ashi geri, after being countered, set right foot to the back in kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. As kick is launched, do a back leg nagashitsuki, while doing a left gedan nagasha uke, and a right, lunging chudan shotei. Then with left foot in back go into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Eight
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Step up right chudan gyaku-tsuki no sukomi. After being countered, set left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right ude uke. As gyaku-tsuki is delivered, do a rising right empi uke. Then do a left hand shooto ude uke covering the face, while punching the attacker's right knee, and standing in a kukutsa dachi pointing away from the attacker. Then bring the right punching hand in to your body creating an elbow, and reinforce it on the back side with your left hand, and explode into the attacker with it to the chudan level, while landing your right knee inside the attacker's right knee. Bring your hands up to the attacker's covering chudan arm, and do a 'wobble' push away, left leg in back to kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Nine
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Step up right jodan gyaku-tsuki. After being countered, set left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right ude uke. Immediately bring back left leg up into left mashomen neeko ashi dachi. As attacker executes a gyaku-tsuki, twist the hips clockwise 45°, performing a right haishu-'goose' block, and a left chudan upper cut. Push off at shoulder, left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Ten
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right jodan juntsuki no sukomi. Step up right jodan gyaku-tsuki. After being countered, set left foot in back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke, followed by an immediate step up and launching of that right blocking arm into an empi strike to the shoulder of the attacker, while grabbing the attacker's right hand with your left hand. twist your right hand downward, grabbing the attacker's gi, and do a upward rising haito to the attacker's groin. Then step inside and under your and the attacker's arm so that your back is against the attacker's front, and do a left leg gi grab, and throw the attacker over your shoulder as in self defense #13. Pull left leg back into kame dachi, the 4 steps counterclockwise to the attacker's original spot (as in Kihon #5), then 5 steps to your original spot.
Eleven
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Right chudan gyaku-tsuki. After second kick, drop back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right ude uke, right chudan yoko geri, left mawata yoko geri, setting down in original back position into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Twelve
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Left jodan junzuki no sukomi. Step up left chudan mae geri, right gyaku-tsuki, then after counter, 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. As attacker lunges, step lead foot over in sheeko dachi parallel to attacker, doing a right nagasha uke. Do a right gedan shotei uke to the kick, then chudan tsuki, then ude uke to attacker's gyaku-tsuki. (All three moves done in immediate repetition.) Follow up with a left mawata urachen keeping your feet planted. As you retract from the urachen, drop back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Thirteen
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Left jodan junzuki no sukomi. After counter attack, roll over and up like #5, then 4 steps to finish.
Defender: Roll back into double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. As attacker lunges, do a right mae ashi geri, with the koshi (ball) of the foot, into the attacker's ribs, set the foot down behind attacker's lead foot, and do a right lapel sukami (grab), and simultaneously do an outside-in foot barai (sweep), and pull down with the grab, throwing the attacker to the ground. Follow this with a left shooto to the throat (nodo). Roll the attacker over, then jump back into kame dachi, then 4 steps to finish.
Fourteen (remaining kihons are all right-right first step)
Same as 13, except attacker starts on the right side, and defender retreats with right forward.
Fifteen
Attacker: Roll forward into a double tatei, kame dachi, right forward. Right front leg chudan mae geri.
Defender: Roll back into double tatei, kame dachi, left forward. Lean away from kick, then sweep it followed by a right haito to the temple, right stomp kick to the back of the knee, pulling them down and over backwards. Drop to a kneel, and execute a nodo shooto then 4 steps starting left over right to finish.
Sixteen
Attacker: Roll out on right, left back leg mae ashi geri (set forward).
Defender: Roll back on right, outside nagasu ude uke, set right behind/trip, at same time doing right jodan tsuki to front of face with full extension, then perform right barai (counterclockwise) over right trip. Finish with a left tsuki to face, then push away. Roll with 4 steps starting left over right to finish.

17 (First Basic Kata)
Attacker: Roll out on right, right jodan juntsuki nosukomi, then left reverse jodan juntsuki. Finish like Kihon #5.
Defender: Left jodan uke, step forward right jodan uke.
Cover, and do a left Jodan wristgrab, counterclockwise turning takedown. Like Kihon #5, hrow arm away, 4 steps to attackers spot, then 5 steps back to finish.
18 (Pinan Nidan)
Attacker: Roll out on right, right jodan juntsuki nosukomi.
Defender: Left tetsui, right yakazuki, drop; left leg sweep-takedown, groin stomp.
19 (Pinan Shodan)
Attacker: Roll out on right, right jodan juntsuki nosukomi.
Defender: Roll back on right, left ude uke, spin attacking arm clockwise, pull in punch with left hand, right hand should push away.
20 (Pinan Sandan)
