The Carson Pass Highway is a corridor with MANY adventure opportunities off the radar of most adventurers. With easy access from the Central Valley and South Lake Tahoe, Highway 88 offers world class bouldering, toproping, lead climbing and multipitch climbing opportunities.
These sites are adventure climbing destinations with cross country approaches, 3rd and 4th class approaches and descents, regular downclimbing, traditional gear needed to make even toprope anchors, and routefinding is a skill you must have developed. There is little to no cellular phone signal along the highway and with remote approaches a rescue will not be likely.
If you are not a confident climber with backcountry climbing skills, please develop these skills at more established sites and then come to enjoy the adventure climbing along Highway 88. The community ethic of the area is safe but challenging climbing- please respect this ethic by climbing routes as you find them and not altering the routes. If you have a safety concern, follow the ethic of all mountaineers and consult the first ascent party.
