The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
I have been specifically focusing on this standard during my solo period because it is very complex and I want to be sure to meet all of the requirements for this standard. According to Standard #8- the teacher uses a variety of strategies to teach the content. This means the teacher uses strategies to meet groups and individuals, engages students in monitoring their own learning, design and implement relevant learning experiences, varies his/her role in the classroom, opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding, engages students in higher level questioning, using technology, expand student communication, and ask questions. Additionally, the essential knowledge the teacher must have is to understand cognitive processes, how to apply a range of strategies to meet learning goals, differentiate instruction, understand multiple forms of expression, use resources, and to support with technology.
This strategy can be met through a research project where students are to use technology and credible sources to find the answers to research questions. For this standard, I will satisfy some of the criteria through the socratic seminar we will be doing next week. Students will find a current event to use in this seminar that reflects the big idea of freedom of choice in relation to The Giver and utopian/dystopian communities. This will satisfy criteria 7: use of technology and evaluating the trustworthiness of the source. I will satisfy criteria #8 through the socratic seminar's essential questions, and criteria #9 has been satisfied through the students using a double bubble map for their first data point writing assignment. Criteria #10 has been satisfied through small group discussion and with the whole group discussion for the socratic seminar.
The first artifact I will use is the powerpoint presentation to help students review how to find credible sources.
The second artifact will be the socratic seminar reflection and peer evaluation. This supports "The teacher develops learners' abilities to participate in respectful, constructive discussions of content in a small and whole group setting".
