The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.
This standard addresses the teachers ability to apply different concepts and perspectives to the classroom. Some ways to do this could be by using current events to spark discussion that might relate to what is being read in class.
Additionally, this standard could be addressed by including curriculum from other core classes (such as social studies or science) in their ELA lessons.
For my first artifact I will use the materials used for Socratic Seminar during The Challenge of Utopia unit plan. According to the standards, "The teacher engages learners in learning and applying the critical thinking skills used in the context area(s). S/he introduces them to the kinds of problems or issues addressed by the content area (s) as well as the local/global contexts for those issues".
For my second artifact I will use the thinking maps the students used in order to organize their ideas for their first data point and their embedded assessment 1. This supports, "The teacher guides learners in gathering, organizing, and evaluating information in ideas from digital and other resources and from different perspectives."
