The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
This standard is meant for the teacher to be sure to meet the individual needs of each student. This is something that I find myself doing a lot during student teaching. Since I am not in my Solo period yet, I am able to support the lead teacher during his lessons. Through this, I am able to check on individual students who might need more time or a different explanation of the material.
During my Solo Period I was able to do Response Intervention (RTI) for struggling students. These students were pulled from their homeroom classes into mine to catch up on missing work or to work with other students on the same assignment. The first RTI was for students to plan their essay on the reading done in class and to create a double bubble map to use to organize their ideas for writing. This is for the first data point during my solo unit plan. The second opportunity for RTI during my solo period was for students who need to make up or retake quizzes for The Giver reading assignments. Students who were able to retake quizzes showed improvement on their scores and were also able to give verbal responses to some of the questions that may have caused misconceptions. All students are able to retake quizzes, redo essays and turn in late work. Typical 504 accommodations are granted to 504 students, as well as other students who might benefit from these accommodations.
For my first artifact I will show the packet I created for a student who needed to hand-write his assignments and have help with The Giver unit. This packet included graphic organizers, writing prompts, quizzes, and an alternative vocabulary assignment. I was able to provide this packet to one other student who is a 504 student, and the alternative vocabulary assignment to accelerated readers who could not find words in The Giver they didn't know for their vocabulary list, and for another 504 student.
My second artifact will show The Giver utopia brochure that the students created. During my solo period I started the unit off with this project to give students a better understanding of the concept of utopia. Students were given a menu of options to chose from to complete this project.
