Validation of the Central European Soil database

Local Coordinator.

This is project supported by Visegrad Strategic Program (Strategic Grant). Partners are University of Miskolc, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Czech University of Life Sciences from Prague and Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute from Bratislava.

The e-SOTER project, which preceded this project have developed several soil data layers for central. Originally only Hungary and the Czech republic were presented in the consortium, which we have extended in this project to Slovakia and Poland to achieve the full coverage of the region.

Field data harmonization, soil description, and validation database development requires joint field trips having representatives from all participating countries. The planned field trip length is 5 days each, and each countries will organize one. 20 soil pits per countries will be visited and described by the team and data will be recorded and compiled into a validation dataset. The dataset will be used for statistical validation and for correcting the potentially emerging problems of the database. Typical correlation and interpretation problems will be discussed and reported in a joint scientific paper. Based on the finding a new version of the dataset will be created and published jointly in the four countries. The expected result of the project is a freely accessible, harmonized, quality assured soil database for central Europe. This database already exists. The real success of this project would be a newer version of the dataset after incorporating all new data and knowledge into the methodology and the training dataset.
