ISUS

Impact of sealing of urban soils (Ekranic Technosols) on changes of their properties (ISUS)

I'm Coordinator of the project.

Soil sealing is a serious threat for all urban areas of the world and in smaller scale also in the rural areas in the Western World. The Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection (22/09/2006.) issued by European Commission state that Soil is subject to a series of degradation processes or threats. These include erosion, decline in organic matter, local and diffuse contamination, sealing, compaction, decline in biodiversity, salinisation, floods and landslides. The problem of covering the soil was then noticed at the highest EU decision-making level.

The aim of the project is multi-factor assessment of the scale and types of transformations in various versions of sealed urban soils (under asphalt, concrete, cobblestones), based on comparison with the properties of unsealed soils of adjacent areas. The research will focus on Ekranic Technosols from the city of Toruń.
