Professional, rigorous and fun piano lessons tailored to the needs of the individual are offered in a friendly environment. We also encourage students to attend optional practice performances and performance classes, which are free to enrolled students.
The Caroline Tyler Piano School is where people come to learn more about music and piano playing from Caroline Tyler: concert pianist, composer, ABRSM examiner and British & International Federation of Festivals piano adjudicator.
The studio is located between London and Brighton in Warninglid, Haywards Heath, West Sussex. It houses a Steinway Grand piano and an additional Yamaha upright. There is a waiting room for parents of young students, as well as seating inside the teaching room for our informal performance evenings, and for parents to sit in on lessons if they wish to.
A small number of guest piano teachers occasionally take lessons when Caroline is performing, examining or adjudicating elsewhere in the UK or abroad. They are also highly experienced performers and teachers who are dedicated to helping students fulfil their potential. We are very fortunate as a community of musicians to have benefitted from the incredible talents and teaching of Rebecca Cohen, Maria Marchant, Anyssa Neumann, Grace Mo, Madalina Rusu, and Birsen Ulucan.
Students can study for exams and competitions with confidence, or just learn music they have always wanted to play. Everyone is welcome as long as they are able to listen, learn, and practice. We are not an exam or scholarship factory. We are about good music. Good results are a by-product of a true working understanding. The most ambitious students have performed in concerts. achieved piano diplomas, places to study music at top universities such as Cambridge, received into the 140's in Associated Board exams, auditioned successfully for Junior conservatoire places (Royal College of Music, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Academy of Music), won competitions and festival prizes and won music scholarships to private school, or used their piano playing and musical understanding as a springboard into professional composition and music production. Others just want to learn for the enjoyment of music and to become accomplished at an instrument they enjoy. All students are expected to practice a minimum of 5 days per week, with length of practice time corresponding to how advanced the level of ability has become. Composition, harmony, sight-reading, technique and improvisation are all applied according to the needs of the student.
I teach each student how to play with real quality and professional finish at each level, from beginner to diploma level. If you really want to learn to play the piano properly, this is the place for you! If you do not want to practice, please look elsewhere. If you love music and you are able to listen and practice, get in touch! Please see the FAQ page for more information.
