The social was held at 8:00pm on Saturday, 12 November, 2011, La Villa Restaurant 1317 14th St NW, (between N N St & N Rhode Island Ave) , Washington, DC 20005
The community of researchers actively working together to accomplish substrate-independent minds has been organizing since at least 1994. First, there was the Mind Uploading Research Group (MURG), a mailing list hosted by Joe Strout, then by Randal Koene. Then there was the minduploading.org web site and associated activity. That site still exists, though it is ready for an update. Of course, now we have carboncopies.org - but even before carboncopies we made it a point to try to meet up at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SFN).
These meet-ups have been taking place since SFN2008. That was the same SFN Annual Meeting at which Sebastian Seung used his keynote to accelerate interest in connectomics!
The opportunity to meet our friends and colleagues face-to-face around the SFN meeting has been welcome and useful, and at times even semi-formal (e.g. the SFN Satellite Event on Whole Brain Emulation, organized with collaboration from the InnerSpace Foundation).
This year, at SFN2011 in Washington, DC, we are having the Whole Brain Emulation Social at 8pm on Saturday, 12 November, 2011. (Note that there is a second, slightly broader event planned for 14 November.)
