CLT Grammar in Context

Learning Modules: The modules on this site offer materials to learn 16 commonly used pre-verbal particles in Mandarin Chinese  就、也； 会、能、得、要、想、可以、应该； 不、没； 也、都、还、又、再。They are grouped into four groups:

• • Conjunctive

  • Modal

  • Discourse

  • Negation

Each module begins with sentence-level explanations of the grammar along with short examples from rich discourse contexts and explicitly presents the meaning and patterns of the featured adverbs or Then learners practice the features in guided activities. All examples of usage come from natural language in advertisements, movie clips, TV interviews, posters, novellas, essays, amongst others. Not only will students review the basic functions of each grammatical particle, but also explore and practice the particles within extended discourse and rich communicative contexts.

Learner Level: The modules have been developed for learners who have completed two-years of study of Mandarin Chinese in a classroom setting and reached an intermediate level of proficiency. The goal is to help learners develop towards advanced level proficiency.

Teacher Support: 

• All the materials on this website can be used as they are presented online or they can be downloaded as worksheets and raw materials.

• Teachers may adapt the worksheets to address the specific needs of their learners.
