Scout-age youth experience dramatic physical and emotional growth. Scouting offers them opportunities to channel much of that change into productive endeavors and to find the answers they are seeking for many of their questions.
In the outdoors, youth have opportunities to acquire skills that make them more self-reliant. They can explore canoe and hiking trails and complete challenges they first thought were beyond their ability. There is no greater teacher than the great outdoors.
Scouting programs instill in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
In 2001, a group of Chinese parents who cared about their children’s education accompanied their children to participate in activities with the Scouts BSA. Not only did they learn mainstream values and outdoor survival skills, but they also came to understand the hundred-year history of scouting and the benefits that scout training brings to children. As the number of second-generation Chinese Americans continued to grow, they established the Chinese American Scouting Association (CASA).
Since CASA was founded, several thousand—nearly ten thousand—Chinese American youth have participated in these Chinese American scout troops in the Bay Area. Among these troops, several hundred scouts have completed the highest rank of Eagle Scout. These children are often given priority when applying to schools or jobs because Americans know that a scout who completes and earns the rank of Eagle Scout has already gone through many challenges and training. They have learned independent outdoor survival skills, developed strong character, know how to work as part of a team, possess good communication skills, and have demonstrated outstanding performance.
Troop 606 / Pack 606 is located in Almaden Valley and is one of the scout troops that belongs to CASA. It has a history of more than 20 years. If you are also interested in joining this big family together with your child, please feel free to contact us.
(CASA: Chinese American Scouting Association)
