Carl Hiaasen was born in 1953 and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is the first of four children born to lawyer Kermit and Patricia Hiaasen. He started writing at age six when his father got him a typewriter. After graduating from Plantation High School in 1970, he entered Emory University, where he contributed satirical humor columns to the student-run newspaper The Emory Wheel. In 1972, he transferred to the University of Florida, where he wrote for The Independent Florida Alligator. Hiaasen graduated in 1974 with a degree in journalism. He was a reporter for Cocoa Today (Cocoa, Florida) for two years, beginning in 1974, and then was hired by the Miami Herald in 1976, where he still works.
My Opinion: Themes of Hiassen's novels are the environmental destruction of his beloved Florida and an ability to wring great humor out of mankind's foibles. My first exposure to him was actually his second book, Double Whammy. I have been a devoted reader ever since. Among his notable characters who appear with some regularity is Skink, a former Governor who simply walked away from his office when he found he was unable to stop the wrecking of the Florida Everglades and beaches. Hiassen is also a serous columnist for the Miami Herald where he writes of things that concern him. I strongly recommend this author. (laugh out loud funny but on point ecologically). To the best of my recollection, I have read all of his books.
