Journal of Caribbean Ornithology: Bigger Team, Bigger Presence, Better Product

Facilitated by: Justin Proctor (BirdsCaribbean, JCO), Doug Weidemann (JCO, Virginia Tech), and Alice McBride (JCO)

Purpose: This workshop is intended to update our community on their peer-reviewed publication, the Journal of Caribbean Ornithology, as well as to open the floor to community members for feedback and discussion about the workings of the journal and goals for the future.

Overview: At the 2017 BC Cuba Conference, the JCO Round table elicited a lot of great input on the strengths and weaknesses of the JCO. Since then, the Editorial Team has pushed hard to improve the capability of the journal, and is proud to have seen the following accomplishments:

    • Over 30 manuscripts published
    • 6 new staff hired
    • New website and software upgrades
    • Fully completed Archives, dedicated to James W. Wiley
    • Improved communication with authors and reviewers

Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will have had the opportunity to see more of the "behind the scenes" mechanics of the JCO, as well as weigh in on what they feel is working well and what needs improvement. We will specifically discuss:

  • Trilingual publication - should we continue with this?
  • Indexing the JCO
  • Page charges
  • JCO's connectivity and role within BirdsCaribbean
  • Ways to improve the quality of manuscripts submitted to the JCO (incorporating new resources for new and ESL authors)

Session structure: Participants will be given a 10 minute introduction and overview presentation, followed by a round table format for discussion.
