She, Arundhati Bhaumik (nee Mukherjee upto 21st November, 1983) used to play and sometimes run on the mountainous ranges of Kurseong hill station, 20 km before Darjeeling in W.B in her childhood days. She was very fond of trekking. Our tour began with a visit to Ajanta and Ellora in Maharastra, India in August 1985. But we were robbed of our all the money from the hotel [Punjab Boarding and Lodging in Aurangabad] we stayed. But we came across an extraordinary person in the railway platform at Aurangabad, Ashoke Kumar by name [originally from Hyderabad, A.P] who helped us with some money which we used to complete our tour. Shri Ashok Kumar was like an angel to give us a big relief at that moment and we returned his money after we were back at Hyderabad.
In the year 1988 October we planned to trek in the Himalayas, a place known as Kedarnath (altitude 11,756 ft) from Gourikund (altitude about 6000 ft). This happened to be my first experience in the Himalayan trekking. It was delightful and we used to inspire others for trekking to the spot. Later in two occasions we had trekked to the same place, once in 1996 and then in 2000. It happened that in 1996, with two more persons [Gautam Mukhopadhyay and Pradip Sarkar], we had a trekking experience, in the first place, for 'Valley of Flowers', a place discovered by Frank Smith when he was returning after scaling the peak Kamet. Then we had gone to 'Hem Kunt Sahib', at an altitude of 15,300 ft, place where Guru Gobind Singh sat on meditation. For going to both these places one needs to trek from Gobindghat to Ghangaria [about 10,000 ft altitude], the point from where route bifurcates. We had a group of 6 persons in 2000 and 5 places, called 'Panch Kedar', we trekked at one go which required about 159 km of trekking covering a total climb of 22,000 ft. We used to name this trekking as "millennium trekking".
The year 1989 gave us a rich experinece as we stayed in Bangalore for about 12 days. I went on official tour to ISRO for rigorous "Training on digital image processing and interpretation" [ I had never been assigned to do any work later on with 'image processing system' and I used to cite this as an example, in discussions, as to how HRD should do things in India]. The days were being too happily utilised by her for travelling around the cities of Bangalore. At the week ends we used to have tours to Belud, Halebid and Sravan Belegola.
