Influence

B.K.Bhaumik was fascinated with the subject 'electronics' since his boyhood days and used to think in pursuing research in the same field. After M.Sc he was selected as Junior Research Scholar in Electronics and Communication Sciences Unit (ECSU) of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta to work with Prof. D.Dutta Majumder who gave him two volumes on 'Speech Processing and Recognition (published by IEEE)' to begin with. From the volumes, he got an idea that the technique called 'Linear Predictive Coding' could be applied for processing of speech signals when glottis remained closed. Prof. Majumder, on listening, asked him to send the work for an ensuing International Conference at IIT, Kharagpur. It was immediately accepted but he was too afraid and shy to present his work thinking that it might not bear any significance. He sent the work to Prof. David J Broad of Speech Communication Lab., Santa Barbara, California who was a renowned speech analyst, for an evaluation of the work. Prof. Broad wrote a 4 page letter asking him to prove certain things theoretically mentioning that "you have the beginnings of a significant result!".

Thus he had began in 1980 and continued for two more years at ISI. Later in 1983, he got a permanent position in Department of Atomic Energy's Uranium Exploration Group. He realized that there were ample scopes of 'data processing and interpretation using statistical methods'. In this respect Shri S.G.Tewari, retired in 1994, inspired him to undertake certain studies - firstly with the interpretation of radon (a gaseous daughter product of uranium) data. In parallel he was also doing with the 'processing and interpretation of airborne radiometric data'. Thus, sometimes alone, sometimes in association with colleagues he was able to produce the following outcomes outlined in subpage 'Some Works' :
