In our Sunday Bible group some years ago, a lady who had been a Christian and been involved in the local Church for over 15 years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-Moses law) I wonder just how many Christians will actually pick up the inaccuracy in this claim. Moses existed some 500 years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since put together a Biblical chronological chart and explained graphically the chronology of individuals and occasions.
Why do we dwell on our favorite themes and sugar coated preaching?
We teach on a text from Malachi and a narrative about John and a topic from the book of Hebrews and then the example of Matthew or the perseverance of Noah - parts from here and everywhere, but we do not put it all at once in an apparent understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a decent Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we are bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, some of them dangerously edging toward Liberal thinking, when if we could be instructed the fundamental principles of Church history, we then would not be so doomed to do the same again.
Let's us as teachers and preachers sew together the fragments of the Bible and His plan into a seamless tapestry that our people can draw on for the remainder of their lives, helping them to comprehend God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and how to better interpret the Bible to live by.
It's not hard to do, and it's not boring if we are ready to put in a bit of study with prayer and fervor, and just possibly you can make use of a Bible Timeline as well.
