Joe Pool Lake is a fresh water impoundment (reservoir) located in the southern part of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in North Texas.
The lake encompasses parts of Tarrant, Dallas and Ellis counties.
The lake measures 7,740 acres (31.3 km2) with a conservation storage capacity of 176,900 acre feet (218,200,000 m3).
With a maximum depth of 75 feet (23 m) the lake drains an area of 232 square miles (601 km2).
Joe Pool Lake was named after Joe Pool, a congressman from the Oak Cliff area of Dallas who represented this district from 1967 until his death in 1968.
Prior to 1967, Pool represented all of the state of Texas as its last U.S.
Congressman-At-Large from 1963 through 1966.
Pool was highly influential in passage of legislation and funding of his idea of a flood control and water conservation lake that he submitted in a report to President - Elect John F.
Kennedy and Vice President- Elect Lyndon B.
Johnsons' Kennedy-Johnson Natural Resources Advisory Committee on December 15, 1960.[1] The project to build Joe Pool Lake started from a promise first made in the late 1920s,[1] renewed in the late 1950s[2] by the late U.S.
Rep.
Joe Pool and was carried out after Pool's death in 1968 by a citizens committee called the Lakeview Planning Council[3] and Pool's congressional friends.
The oft-stalled lake project – approved by Congress in 1965 and known as Lakeview Lake until 1982 when President Ronald W.
Reagan signed a bill to rename the lake to Joe Pool Lake[4]—had been a subject of delays caused by property owners, environmental lawsuits and lack of funding.
As a result, when construction began in 1977 – nine years after Joe Pool died – it became one of the first projects in the nation to pay its own way because of federal cuts in recreational park projects.
Construction of the lake dam was completed in December 1985.
Impoundment of water began in January 1986 and the lake was filled by June 1989.
Joe Pool Lake was named after Joe Richard Pool (February 18, 1911 – July 14, 1968), the last Congressman-At-Large from Texas and the United States.
Because Pool represented from the same size constituency, the whole state of Texas from 1963 to 1967, his constituents numbered 10 million, making Pool's constituency one of the largest in the history of the United States House of Representatives.
Pool was considered a third U.S.
Senator by many voters in Texas, even though his legislative chamber was at the other end of the United States Capital.
Joe Pool was born in Fort Worth, Texas.
He graduated from Oak Cliff High School (now Adamson High School) in the Dallas Independent School District and attended the University of Texas from 1929 to 1933.
In 1937, he graduated from Southern Methodist University School of Law, was admitted to the Texas bar, and commenced practicing law in Dallas, Texas.
During World War II, he served with the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 as a special investigator in the Intelligence section of the Army Air Corps.
After the war, he resumed the practice of law.
He entered politics as a Democrat and won a race for state representative from Dallas County in 1952.
He won re-election in 1954 and 1956, serving from 1953 to 1959.
He was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S.
Representative from the 5th District of Texas (Dallas County) in 1958, losing in the primary to Barefoot Sanders.
He ran again in 1960, winning the primary, but lost in the general election to Republican incumbent Bruce Alger.
In the 1960 Congressional reapportionment, Texas received an additional U.S.
House seat, but the districts were not redrawn and an at-large seat was created by the legislature.
Pool won the Democratic nomination and defeated the Republican in the general election to serve in the Eighty-eighth Congress.
He was also re-elected at-large to the Eighty-ninth Congress in 1964.
However, in Wesberry v.
Sanders (1964), the U.S.
Supreme Court banned at-large Congressional districts.
Texas redrew its districts, and Pool was re-elected again in 1966 to the Ninetieth Congress but this time to the 3rd district that encompassed the western half of Dallas County.[5] Pool served in Congress from January 9, 1963, until his death from a heart attack on July 14, 1968, at Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas.
Pool, as a member of his House Post Office Subcommittee, was on a postal facility inspection tour of facilities in Los Angeles, California and Houston, Texas at the time of his death.[6] “It can truly be said he died in the line of duty.
He was one of the foremost men of the country in fighting for those ideals for which America stands, for measures that would strengthen our institutions of government and combatting those that would destroy our government," U.S.
House of Representatives Speaker John Mc Cormack of Massachusetts said in his eulogy of Joe Pool on the House floor.[6] “Pool gave his life for his country” eulogized lifetime friend Texas State Senator Jimmy Phillips of Angleton, Texas to 900 mourners at Pool's funeral at the Tyler Street Methodist Church in the Oak Cliff part of Dallas where Pool grew up.[7][8][9][10] Pool was interred in Laurel Land Memorial Park, also in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas.[5] Joe Pool Lake's creation is the story of two promises Pool made to solve the same problem to two different audiences more than 30 years apart.
Joe Pool attended Oak Cliff High School, now known as Adamson High School, in the late 1920s.
Pool and his young friends, including Wylie Stufflebeme, later from Grand Prairie, Texas and Claton Wyman, later from Duncanville, Texas, (who were in attendance or were pallbearers at Pool's funeral in 1968) used to hunt and fish in their spare time in the Mountain Creek and Walnut Creek watersheds, located in southern Dallas and Tarrant Counties and northern Ellis county.[11][12] On some of these trips Pool and his classmates would witness the banks of these two creeks overflow from heavy storms causing substantial water damage to downstream farms, businesses, and homes mostly in Grand Prairie, the Oak Cliff parts of Dallas, and Mansfield.
Later Wyman shared with Pool's wife Elizabeth and sons Richard, Wesley, John, and Joe Jr.
that on one of the many washed-out trips the group experienced Pool committed to his young friends that “It’s too bad no one stops the flooding ruining these homes.” He went on to suggest to them that “If no one else can stop this devastation before I get the opportunity some day, I promise to do my best to solve the problem.” Wyman, who in June 1966 was hosting a party for the Pool's and their mutual friends at his Duncanville, Texas home spoke of Pool's initial promise to his young friends in the 1920s.
At this 1966 party Wyman informed the Pool family for the first time that "your father promised me, Stufflebeme, and some of our other friends in the late 1920s that he would solve the Mountain Creek and Walnut Creek flooding problem and lo and behold he is doing just that with his lake idea."[1] From January 1953 through December 1958 Joe Pool represented Place 5 in one of the all At-Large Dallas County state representative seats.
He was elected by him and his family handing out to voters his signature “Keep Cool with Pool” fans.[2][13][14] While serving in the legislature Pool authored bills that outlawed lewd and horror comic books, legislation requiring insurance reforms, and an animal protection bill for the Humane Society.[13][14][15][16][17] As chairman of the subcommittee of the House Conservation and Reclamation Committee, Pool co-authored several bills concerning flood control projects.
One of which he handled was the passage of the Trinity River Authority Act in 1955.[15] This bill provided for coordination of existing and future reservoir water resources for the entire Trinity River Basin.
Because of Pool and his House subcommittee's research on this basin, which accounted for evaluation of all major creeks flowing into the Trinity Basin, Pool and his subcommittee members were apprised by subcommittee staff of the future worthiness of creeks whose water capacities could support a flood control water conservation reservoir.
These new reservoirs would alleviate some of the drought conditions created in Texas in the 1950s and would greatly support new orderly development in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Pool felt this significant water study was a late 1950s clarion call to act for chambers of commerce members, city planners, and Pool's concerned constituents throughout Dallas, Tarrant, and Ellis Counties.
Still existing was the issue of the viability of the Mountain and Walnut Creek watersheds to qualify for a future flood control project.
Pool informed his Oak Cliff, Cedar Hill, Grand Prairie, Duncanville, Midlothian, Mansfield, Arlington and De Soto chambers of commerce constituents and other affected neighbors that large flood control projects mostly come about through the federal government rather than the state government due to the immense expense required for land acquisition and construction costs.
However, to lift the hopes of affected neighbors and those southwest chambers of commerce members Pool said, in his opinion, the research gathered by the subcommittee justified the need for a Mountain Creek / Walnut Creek watershed flood control study by a government agency.
In 1980, Wesley Pool, son of Joe Pool, interviewed the editor, publisher of The Oak Cliff Tribune Ray Zauber, a longtime friend of the Pool family.
In the interview, Zauber stated, "Joe Pool reiterated to these late 1950s constituents the same promise he made over 30 years earlier to his Oak Cliff High classmates in the 1920s: that, if given the chance, he would finally solve this Mountain/Walnut Creek watershed flood control problem."[2] Although undefeated after three state representative elections from 1952 to 1956, Joe Pool felt he needed a bigger stage in order to enact the changes he and his supporters felt necessary to alleviate longtime constituent problems that could not be adequately addressed at the state level.
The solutions to many of these size problems required approval from a much larger government body with a much larger audience, the federal government.
Pool saw in federal jurisdiction the quantities of available funds and the problem solving apparatus he felt necessary to effect the changes in government policy that would aid the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Unfortunately for Pool, his next three elections, two for U.S.
Congressman from Dallas County in 1958, 1960, and one for Dallas City Councilman in 1959 were unsuccessful.[5] Ever the optimist he was not deterred.
However painful the 1960 Dallas County U.S.
Congress race loss was for Pool personally, unbeknownst to him at the time, there was one outcropping from this election that would end up making the loss bittersweet.
Pool's inclusion on the 1960 Dallas County Democratic Ticket with presidential candidate U.S.
Senator John F.
Kennedy of Massachusetts and vice-presidential candidate U.S.
Senator Lyndon B.
Johnson of Texas became a fateful encounter for Pool's earlier promises to find a solution to one of his pet projects that were not yet on his radar.
The events sparked by this 1960 reunion between old friends Kennedy, Johnson, and Pool would allow Pool in the coming months to formulate his idea for a solution to the problem that he had promised to solve more than once.
Pool's solution would forever change the Dallas-Fort Worth growth landscape impacting millions of new residents and businesses long after Pool's death in 1968.
During the 1960 Dallas County U.S.
Congress race Joe Pool was the Democratic nominee trying to unseat the popular three-term conservative Republican incumbent Bruce Alger.
At the time Alger was the sole Republican member of the U.S.
House of Representatives from the southern part of the United States.
Alger and the Dallas Republicans painted Pool, a longtime conservative Democrat, as a liberal protege of Kennedy and Johnson who they branded as a traitor to the south for his running on Kennedy's ticket.
Because Dallas tended to vote conservatively in the 1950s, the odds of the Kennedy-Johnson-Pool ticket winning Dallas County in November 1960 were very long.
Pool's friendship with Johnson developed through Johnson's wife, Lady Bird Johnson, the former Claudia Alta Taylor who Pool served with when he was chairman of the University of Texas Judiciary Council in the early 1930s.
While in the legislature “Pool introduced the measure that helped shift the state primary to May so that U.
S.
Senator Lyndon Johnson could run for re-election and the Democratic presidential nomination simultaneously in 1960.”[13][14] According to a letter written by U.S.
Senator John F.
Kennedy of Massachusetts to Pool, Kennedy's affection for his friend Joe Pool is best expressed through an October 19, 1960 letter to Pool sizing up their campaign at that juncture.
Kennedy states to Pool “Dear Joe, I need not tell you that this campaign has been and will continue to be difficult to the end.
Your support of the national ticket is essential if we are to win a popular verdict.
As your national candidates, Senator Johnson and I also wish to assure you of our confidence in your own campaign.
We believe that your efforts will be a contributing factor in achieving a solid Democrat majority in the key administration offices of the fifty states and in the congress.
Let me at this time express my appreciation for your support and my earnest hope that in January we shall have the opportunity to work together, as elected representatives of the people, toward achieving the goals to which the Democratic Party is dedicated.
With warm personal regards, John F.
Kennedy.”[3] With regards to Republican Bruce Alger, Kennedy and Johnson wanted no more Republican proliferation in the Democratic-controlled south in 1960.
Joe Pool was their best hope in reversing the Republican southern strategy at their Dallas oasis.
Because of the Dallas wariness of Kennedy-Johnson at the top of the ticket, Pool trailed Alger severely going into the final days of the 1960 campaign.
About 3 days before the November election however, an incident in downtown Dallas marked Bruce Alger's political career forevermore..
As authors Bill Minutaglio and Steven L.
Davis relate in their book Dallas 1963 Wanted for Treason.
“In many ways Bruce Alger’s political career remains defined by the searing moment out on the streets of Dallas in November 1960-- when the world saw startling images of petite Lady Bird Johnson, her face twisted in fear and then anger, as the mink coat mob swirled around her, some spitting and pushing and screaming.” [18] T.V.
news reports nationally carried the repugnant scene of Congressman Alger and his Republican female fan club known as “ the Alger Girls” (mink coat mob) harassing a vice presidential candidate's wife.
The city's image had paid a price.
According to Pool's son, Wesley, the phones at their residence were non-stop ringing with many Republicans noting their displeasure of the scene their congressman had staged for Lady Bird and Senator Johnson.[19] In October 1963, three years after the Johnson protest, “Pool reflected on the 1960 incident in an interview with The Dallas Morning News reporter Bob Baskin..
Baskin asked Pool how President Kennedy’s upcoming November visit to Dallas will compare with the reception with Alger’s protest of Kennedy’s Vice President running-mate Lyndon Johnson and his wife Lady Bird in the 1960 campaign.
Pool states “I feel that he is the President of the United States and believe that the people of Texas will extend to him a courteous reception.
I am sure that he will not have any discourteous demonstrations, such as occurred in Dallas in 1960 during a visit of our Vice President, Lyndon B.
Johnson and his wife.
Everyone, both Democrats and Republicans, regrets the 1960 incident, and I for one am hopeful that his visit will receive a typical Texas welcome.” [18] In part because of the negative publicity of “ the Alger Girls” incident, Pool, with only a few thousand dollars in contributions, had dramatically closed the polling gap but still lost his congressional race to Alger.
However, at the top of the ticket that Pool had supported, his friends Kennedy and Johnson won their elections as president and vice president.
In publicly condemning Alger's discourteous behavior, Pool had defended his friends possibly at his own peril.
Pool's conviction endeared him to Kennedy and Johnson which, in later years after Pool won the statewide U.S.
Congressman- At - Large election to the U.S.
House in 1962, would bode well for projects in Pool's future legislative agenda.
The 1960 campaign had galvanized the three men's friendship.
The out- cropping / by- product of the1960 campaign was Senators Kennedy and Johnson's September 23, 1960 invitation to Joe Pool, via their director U.S.
Representative Frank E.
Smith of Mississippi, to join their newly established Kennedy-Johnson Natural Resources Advisory Committee.
With this prestigious invitation citizen Pool finally saw the pathway open to the bigger stage and audience he had sought for his flood control projects for the Trinity River and its tributaries.
Pool gladly accepted Kennedy and Johnson's invitation to join their national committee.[4] In announcing his committee's formation Senator Kennedy states “Vigorous action is needed if we are to conserve and develop America’s natural resources.
An aggressive, affirmative policy in this field will be one of the major goals of my administration.
I am, accordingly, very pleased to announce the establishment of a natural resource advisory committee to aid me in the presidential campaign and to submit plans for action by my administration.
Active members of the committee will be named from every state in the Union to ensure that there will be presented to me a full picture of the varied needs of our great country.”[20][5] Joe Pool spent the next 2 months immersing himself into the flood control data that he had compiled when he was in the legislature co- authoring the Trinity River Act of 1955.[15] He updated his flood research to 1960 with all of North Texas creeks and streams that were likely flood prone suspects.
What Pool formulated from his research grew into a flood control report for North Texas.
Pool's survey included his analysis of these flood prone watersheds and his recommendation of what corrections the federal government should enact to alleviate flooding in these watersheds.
On December 15, 1960, committee member Pool mailed his report to the Kennedy-Johnson Natural Resources Advisory Committee in Washington D.C.
In his report Pool advocated for a navigation canal for shipping on the Trinity River from Fort Worth to the Gulf of Mexico which was a popular idea in the 1950s and 1960s before it fell out of public favor in the 1970s. He calls out “polluter cities” in the 18,000 square mile Trinity Basin that is the result of insufficient policing of the watershed and inadequate water conservation facilities.
Pool favored more state control of rivers totally within Texas borders.
He commented on the most recent City of Dallas water study.
Pool states, “One of the salient features of this report calls for the construction of a reservoir on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River upstream from the existing Garza-Little Elm project.
Another calls for a similar reservoir in Denton Creek upstream from the Grapevine project.”[6] On December 16, 1960, a letter to Pool from Committee Director U.S.
Rep.
Frank E.
Smith of Mississippi confirmed Pool's appointment to Senator Kennedy's committee.
[7] After over 30 years of trying, Pool was now granted the grand stage where the audience included his friends the 1960 President and Vice President elects.
Pool had been seeking help in finding a solution for his adopted flood control project, the Mountain Creek/Walnut Creek watershed.
Pool knew his promises might fall on deaf ears if he, an attorney, could not make his case in his closing argument to Kennedy, Johnson, and his fellow committee members of the worthiness of his idea to control flooding in this watershed.
Near the end of his report Joe Pool suggests, “the Federal Government heretofore recognized the tremendous damage that has occurred from time to time by reason of severe flooding both in Dallas and Fort Worth and it has done a worthwhile job in improving the Dallas-Fort Worth floodways as well as constructing flood control reservoirs on Elm Fork, Denton Creek, and Clear Fork, all tributaries of the main river.
However, there is a remaining stream below Dallas that is uncontrolled--Mountain Creek.
This stream embraces a drainage area of 300 square miles and presently has no flood control whatsoever. I believe that a project should be undertaken on this stream not only for flood control but for such conservation as can be economically justified.”[8] The Kennedy-Johnson Natural Resources Committee's secretary Shurlee McGloon sent Pool a letter confirming her receipt, on behalf of Rep.
Frank E.
Smith ( the committee's director) of Pool's report to the committee.
In the December 20, 1960 letter to Pool McGloon states, “On behalf of Congressman Smith who is out of town, I am acknowledging receipt of your recent letter in which you set out your recommendations to the Natural Resources Advisory Committee.
Your proposals have been referred to the subcommittee for study.” [9] Citizen Pool felt a sigh of relief that his 30-year promise might see fulfillment in the not too distant future.
Throughout 1961 citizen Pool was a bit disappointed with the speed of this national committee in taking up members’ suggestions of worthwhile flood control and forestry preservation projects such as his Mountain Creek/Walnut Creek recommendation.
From 1961 through 1962 these longtime, flood impacted property owners in this watershed did not witness much help coming their way.
That would change in November, 1962 with the statewide election of Joe Pool as U.S.
Congressman-At-Large of Texas.
Unlike representing At-Large Place 5 in Dallas County for 6 years in the 1950s legislature, where his county-wide constituency was approximately several hundred thousand, Pool now represented over 10 million constituents.
By representing the whole State of Texas Pool's influence in federal projects gave him more influence than a regular congressman from a smaller district and constituency.
The fact that he was well acquainted with the current occupants of the White House combined with Pool's innate persuasiveness made his pet projects more likely to get quick approval.
On January 9, 1963, the birthday of one of his four sons, John, Pool was sworn in the U.S.
House of Representatives.[21] Soon after taking the oath Pool started monitoring the progress of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers’ study they made at Pool's suggestion in his 1960 report on the flooding problem in the Mountain Creek/Walnut Creek watershed.
Pool made sure this project of interest to him received the Corps utmost attention regarding surveying, engineering, funding allocations, and future studies for a flood control and water storage project in this watershed.
Two and a half years later and after the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers concurred to the feasibility of his proposed project, Texas U.S.
Congressman-At-Large Joe Pool led the fight for congressional funding for the construction of his lake idea, which he named Lakeview Reservoir.
Funds were first appropriated by congress on September 21, 1965, in the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1965.[22] Congressman Pool's 35 year old promise had now been given legitimacy from the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.
The flood control and water conservation promise finally moved forward with a surveying and engineering budget in tow.
On January 17, 1968, U.S.
Representative Pool brought together in his Washington office delegations from all the municipalities bordering Lakeview Reservoir, the officials of the U.S.
Corps of Engineers and U.S.
Department of Public Works to discuss the planned reservoir.
At the suggestion of U.S.
Representative Pool a Lakeview (later Joe Pool[3]) Planning Council, composed of representatives from the municipal delegations and from the state and federal agencies involved, was formed and took as its goal the orderly development of the area around the lake.
Congressman Joe Pool died in Houston's Hobby International Airport July 14, 1968 while serving his House Post Office Subcommittee while on a postal inspection tour of postal facilities in Los Angeles, California and Houston, Texas.[23] Texas State Senator and lifetime friend Jimmy Phillips of Angleton, Texas in his eulogy of Pool at Pool's funeral in Oak Cliff (Dallas) said “It is ironic that he was cut down at the zenith of his career.
He gave his life for his country.”[10] On the floor of the U.S.
House of Representatives, Republican Minority Leader and future U.S.
President, Representative Gerald Ford of Michigan referred to Rep.
Pool as "a real patriot greatly interested in our national security, deeply concerned about elements he thought were undermining our nation."[6] In paying tribute to his longtime friend Joe Pool, U.S.
President Lyndon B.
Johnson said " I am saddened over the untimely death of Rep.
Joe Pool.
As a member of Congress and before that as a member of the Texas State Legislature-- Joe Pool served with dedication and love of his country".[24] After the death of Congressman Pool the Lakeview Planning Council, the council that Pool formed to guide the cities bordering the lake to obtain orderly development around the lake, passed a resolution, first on August 21, 1968, asking the Texas U.S.
congressional delegation to change the name of Lakeview Lake to Joe Pool Reservoir.
The planning council passed a second name change resolution on February 19, 1969.[3] But because a new administration came to Washington that frowned on water project funding, the funding for Lakeview was cut severely in the congressional budgets from 1970 to 1976.
The lakes status was in doubt also during this period from lawsuits stemming from environmental groups and from property owners that opposed selling their land to the U.S.
Corps of Engineers for the lake to be built.
Finally on February 4, 1982, the Lakeview Planning Council passed unanimously a third resolution asking Congressman Martin Frost and Congressman Phil Gramm “to initiate the steps necessary to effectuate this name change to Joe Pool Lake.” On February 15, 1982, David Clayton, President of the Lakeview Planning Council, sent letters to both Congressman Gramm and Congressman Frost citing the lakes new name as Joe Pool Lake.
In Washington, another longtime friend of Pool's, fellow Oak Cliff High alum and majority leader of the U.S.
House of Representatives James (Jim) Wright led the passage of HR7377, “Joe Pool Lake” through the House of Representatives on a unanimous consent vote on December 7, 1982.[10] U.S.
Senator Lloyd Bentsen ushered HR7377 “Joe Pool Lake” through the U.S.
Senate, also with a unanimous consent vote.
It passed the U.S.
Senate on December 19, 1982.[11] After President Ronald W.
Reagan signed HR7377 on December 31, 1982, Joe Pool Lake became law.[4] When Joe Pool died, he had left at least one of his important initiatives undone: Mountain Creek Project.
Fortunately, Joe Pool's friends in congress and on the Joe Pool Planning Council kept Pool's lake idea alive for him and his former constituents.
The project received additional funding in 1967 and was in the planning stages when Richard Nixon became president in 1969.
The Nixon administration eliminated most spending for water conservation projects and Pool's dream was put on the back burner for several years.
Eventually, under President Ford ( who as Republican minority leader in 1968, eulogized Democratic friend Joe Pool on the U.S.
of Representatives floor)[6] partial funding was restored.
The project stalled again, though, as actions brought by environmentalists tied it up in court in the mid-1970s.
Under the Carter administration, full funding was acquired and the Lakeview Lake Project at Mountain Creek began construction in 1977.[13] The two bridges over Mountain Creek and Walnut Creek were started in 1981.
Dam construction was completed in December, 1985.
Water impoundment started in January, 1986.
By June, 1989 Joe Pool Lake was full.[5] In early 1966 Joe Pool served as acting chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee when it conducted hearings investigating the Ku Klux Klan.[14][25][26][27][28][29] Pool again became a national figure in August later that year when he was named to chair a subcommittee that would hold hearings on his bill to make it a federal crime to aid anyone engaged in an armed conflict against the United States.
Pool subpoenaed the war protest organizations and their leaders who resisted the Vietnam War by collecting money for North Vietnam or by blocking troop trains.”[13][14][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] Most of the national magazines, local and national newspapers, as well as national TV evening news covered both controversial hearings.
Moderate Conservative From an April 30, 1964 Dallas Times Herald Editorial -- A Unique Post One of the most difficult assignments in Congress is that of congressman-at-large from any state, particularly Texas with its size and varied economic interests.
This hybrid post crops up every 10 years because state legislatures either cannot, because of limited time, or will not redistrict to conform with population increases revealed by the federal census.
The Times Herald feels that Joe Pool of Dallas has served well in this unique office.
He was elected in 1962 and he deserves re-election to this post which will be abolished December 31, 1965, after the Legislature completes the redistricting job.
Pool carried to Washington the same willingness to work and study which characterized his tenure in the Texas Legislature.
He has been a hard working member of the House Un-American Activities and Postal Committees--two prize assignments for a freshman congressman.
Pool is respected by most Democrats and Republicans in the House.
He has cooperated with other Texas congressmen in solving the legislative problems of their districts--including Dallas--and Texas.
He is a moderate conservative who deserves re-election.[37] A Tight Squeeze As a Middle-Roader The Dallas Morning News April 29, 1965 Column The Hon.
Joe Pool of Dallas has won two elections as congressman-at-large by substantial majorities.
But he sometimes wonders where all that support comes from.
Pool relates there’s an old political expression, “I’ve got friends on both sides, and I stand by my friends.” The large congressman-at-large has had harsh criticism aimed at him from the left and from the right.
In Washington, Rep.
Prentiss Walker, a freshman Republican representative from Mississippi, called Pool a “leftist.” This was during debate on Pool's resolution to have his Un-American Activities subcommittee investigate the Ku Klux Klan.
Last year, Robert W.
Baker of Houston, who had liberal backing, promised to be a staunch supporter of President Johnson's program.
He said Pool would vote to repudiate the President.
Baker also accused Pool of having support of Republicans.
In the general election campaign, however, Pool's Republican opponent called him a “counterfeit Confederate.” Pool, a man of generous belt-line, is finding things, a tight squeeze as a middle-roader.[38] Get Your Joe Pool Campaign Buttons Here The Dallas Times Herald Cartoon by Bob Taylor November 5, 1967 [39][12] On a personal level, Pool throughout his career took great pride in his Washington, Dallas, Austin, and other U.S.
Congressional and Texas Legislative Offices.
Constituent service was paramount to office holder Joe Pool.
Over the years Pool's staff received many accolades for their professionalism and decorum.
Pool mentored office staff to overachieve when working for their real bosses, the constituents.
Even after Pool died Mrs.
Patty Tyson, Pool's top Washington aid, while packing up the closing office, said “the staff had caught up on constituents mail.” As for Pool's “ office motto of overachievement for our constituents” and Pool's mentorship to his staff, Tyson offered this parting evidence of Pool's memorable impact on people's lives.
“One of Pool’s aides, a young Negro named Bill Price, has enrolled in the first class of the new Federal City College which opens here next week.
He will be editor of the college newspaper, Mrs.
Tyson reported.”[40] Joe Pool as Texas State Representative 1953–1959 Co-Authored Trinity River Authority Act[13][15][41] Chairman of Motor Traffic Committee and House Investigating Committee Authored Humane Society Legislation[15][16][17] Authored Legislation Requiring Insurance Law Reforms[13][15] Passed Bill Outlawing Lewd and Horror Comic Books[13][14][15] Delegate to County and State Democratic Conventions, 1952–1960 Authored Legislation for Various Flood Control Projects[15] Joe Pool as U.S.

Next door to the marina, the popular Oasis restaurant features open air dining and live weekend entertainment over the lake's waters.
Joe Pool Lake is mostly fed by Mountain Creek and Walnut Creek and drains north into Mountain Creek leading into Mountain Creek Lake.
Joe Pool Lake is one of the few lakes in Texas that actually drains to the north.
Joe Pool Lake impounds water in two arms formed by Mountain Creek and Walnut Creek.
The Mountain Creek Water Shed is in the Upper Trinity River Basin and has a length of 37 miles (60 km) and a total drainage area of 304 square miles (787 km2).
Currently (2005) Joe Pool Lake serves as a reservoir for the City of Midlothian for their public water supply.
Several other entities have water interests in Joe Pool Lake, but are not currently using the water resources.
The City of Midlothian has a water intake structure in the southeast leg of the lake.
They consume water at a daily rate anywhere from 1 million US gallons (3,800 m3) in the winter months to 9 million US gallons (34,000 m3) in the summer months.
The Trinity River Authority of Texas also has a water intake structure in Cedar Hill State Park, but it currently not in use.
Most species are currently managed with statewide regulations.
The exception is a 14 to 21-inch (530 mm) slot limit on largemouth bass.
Anglers may keep bass that are 14 inches (360 mm) or less in length, or 21 inches (530 mm) or greater.
Daily bag for all species of black bass is 5 in combination, but only one largemouth bass 21 inches (530 mm) or greater may be retained each day.
Comments: Joe Pool Lake opened with tremendous fishing pressure because it lies within 30 miles (48 km) of four million people.
Restrictive limits were put in place to protect the fish from overharvest and fishing has remained good to this point.
Marked brush piles offer habitat in the lower end of the reservoir which are often good for both bass and crappie.
Crappie fishing is also good under the bridges on both arms of the lake.
In the Walnut Creek arm, the old creek channel is a good place to look for bass.
The TRA maintains excellent day use and overnight public recreation facilities.
The only free boat ramp on the lake is at Britton Park on the upper end of the Mountain Creek Arm, although it is $5 to park.
Cedar Hill State Park (214/291-3900) on the east side of the lake has the second most campsites of any facility in the state park system.
It also has lighted fishing piers, boat ramps and group shelters.
Local anglers complain that state park gates do not open until 8 a.m.
daily.
Fishing reports for Joe Pool Lake can be found at the Texas Parks and Wildlife website here:[53] Several archaeological investigations have been carried out in the Joe Pool Lake project area since 1977.
The first phase of study, conducted between 1977 and 1979, identified 42 archaeological and historical sites in the vicinity of the then proposed Lakeview Lake, since renamed Joe Pool.
The study was conducted by archaeologists from Southern Methodist University and was funded by the federal government through the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District.
Archaeological properties identified at that time included small, briefly occupied camps of prehistoric hunter/gatherers, several larger reoccupied prehistoric camps, a small prehistoric village, an ante-bellum plantation, several large post-Civil War farmsteads, and a number of late nineteenth-century farmsteads with standing buildings.
Archaeological investigations in the Joe Pool Lake area have involved both conservation and rescue archaeology.
The extensive architectural and archaeological deposits at the John Wesley Penn farmstead, for example, were investigated and documented.
Similar conservation oriented investigations were conducted at five other historic sites located on major lake shore parks.
The Cobb- Pool site, on the other hand, received major rescue archaeology efforts to recover important information from this Late Prehistoric small village settlement.
Four other prehistoric and seven other historic sites also received rescue archaeology operations directed at identifying important remains and recovering data useful for fulfilling the questions outlined in the research design presented earlier.
All of these studies have been funded by the U.S.
Corps of Engineers (Fort Worth District), the primary sponsor behind the construction of Joe Pool Lake.
From these investigations, we have gained a few more insights into the history and prehistory of the Mountain Creek area.
Excavations of historic farmsteads have indicated that many mid- and late nineteenth century families lived in well constructed, frame dwellings.
Log buildings were not as common as once believed.
Both Dallas and Fort Worth attracted sawmills along the Trinity River bottomlands and sawn lumber was available to most families by the 1850s.
The artifacts recovered from excavations of the yard areas around dwellings have also provided us with some insights into family life and household possessions.
Home canning using the glass fruit jar indicates a break from older traditional foodways by the turn-of-the-century (i.e., 1900).
Animal bones indicate a strong reliance on beef rather than on the more traditional pork.
Both of these pieces of evidence support the dominance of a Midwestern orientation of foodways that diverges from most Texas counties to the south.
The plain white ceramic tablewares and the low consumption of bottle glass for the same period, on the other hand, both correspond more closely with Southern traditions.
One message is clear from these studies.
Both human adaptations (culture and technology) and the natural environment have changed tremendously over the last 12,000 years.
From the evidence of the earliest sites found that were occupied some 6,000 years ago, up to the first American settlers about 140 years ago, the Mountain Creek area has been affected by nature's relentless fluctuations.
The archaeological investigations sponsored by the United States Army Corps of Engineers at Joe Pool have provided a few brief glimpses into the rich record of human history and prehistory of this area.
Time's march never ceases and in another thousand years, future generations may be equally interested in our own society and its archaeological remains.

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) is the international governing body for pool (pocket billiards).
It was formed in 1987, and was initially headed by a provisional board of directors consisting of representatives from Japan, the United States, Sweden, and Germany.
as of February 2019[update], the WPA president is Ian Anderson of Australia, and the organization is headquartered in Sydney.
It is an associate of the World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS), the international umbrella organization that encompasses the major cue sports.
It also sanctions rules and events for carom billiards.
Many European players, who had the European Championships as their highest level of competition, have been aware of pool events in the United States; they were dissatisfied with the development of the sport in the continent, and wanted to compete at a higher level.
In 1976, the Europeans held a world championship in Japan, which spawned some interest and initial contacts with Asia.
However, most of the efforts were initiated by individuals or national organizations, and progressed slowly.
In November 1987, at a European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) board meeting in Germany, the idea of a worldwide competition resurfaced.
The EPBF board members used their own money to fund a group to create a logo, letterheads and communications with various pool organizations.
Kazuo Fujima of Japan replied that Asia was interested in participating.
The group's general assembly was held in conjunction with the 1988 European Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.
The group also formed a provisional board that consisted of Kazuo Fujima (Japan), Paul Gerni (USA), Jorgen Sandman (Sweden), and Horst Vondenhoff (Germany).[citation needed] In March 1990, the inaugural WPA World Nine-ball Championship was held in Bergheim, Germany.
The playing field included 32 men and 16 women in separate divisions, and has since become an annual event.[1] On March 3, 1990, the World Pool-Billiard Association was sanctioned by the general assembly as the international governing body for pool.
The acronym WPA was selected so it would not conflict with the existing Women's Professional Billiard Association (WPBA).
Membership in the WPA has grown since its inception.
In 1991, Australia and New Zealand, under the umbrella of the Australasian Pool Association, became members.
In 1999, the organizations associated with Latin America and the Caribbean became members, and in 2000, a substantial portion of the organizations from Africa joined.
The WPA members are grouped by six continental/regional confederations, who in turn, consist of members from a country's national federation.
The chart and table shows the WPA's members as of October 2017[update]:[2] Algeria Cameroon DR Congo Egypt Eritrea Ethiopia Ghana Kenya Lesotho Libya Malawi Mauritius Morocco Nigeria South Africa Swaziland Tanzania Tunisia Uganda Zambia Zimbabwe Bangladesh Brunei China, People's Republic of Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) Doha-Qatar Hong Kong India Indonesia Iran Japan Kuwait Lebanon Macau Malaysia Maldives Pakistan Philippines Saudi Arabia Singapore South Korea Sri Lanka United Arab Emirates Vietnam Canada United States Argentina Aruba Bolivia Bonaire Brazil Chile Colombia Costa Rica Curaçao Ecuador Guatemala Honduras Mexico Nicaragua Panama Peru Uruguay Venezuela Albania Austria Belarus Belgium Bosnia and Herzegovina Croatia Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany Great Britain (UK) Greece Hungary Italy Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Netherlands North Cyprus Norway Poland Portugal Romania Russia Serbia Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkey Ukraine The EPBF pre-dates, and was a founding member of the WPA.

The Ninjas were a militia in the Republic of the Congo, which participated in numerous wars and insurgencies in the 1990s and 2000s.
The Ninjas were formed by the politician Bernard Kolélas in the early 1990s and were commanded by Frédéric Bintsamou, alias Pastor Ntoumi, when Kolelas was in exile.
The militia fought the supporters of President Pascal Lissouba in the 1993–94 Civil War.
In the 1997-99 Civil War, they allied with Lissouba's forces against the supporters of former President Denis Sassou Nguesso.
After Sassou Nguesso's victory in this Civil War, Ntoumi's Ninjas fought an insurgency against his government in the Pool Department.
The conflict in the Pool escalated in a series of violent clashes in 2002-03, after which the Ninja leadership eventually gave up their armed struggle.
Ntoumi announced the disbanding of the Ninjas in 2008 but they resurfaced in 2016, starting the Pool War.
Formed by and originally loyal to Bernard Kolélas,[3][4] the Ninja (militia) was associated with the Bakongo ethnic group.[1] The militia was named after the ninjas of feudal Japan.[5] The Ninja field commander, Pastor Ntoumi, has been described as a cult leader[1] and a "messianic pastor".
In 2003, he told a journalist that the Holy Spirit told him to revive the Ninjas.
Ninja (militia)men wore the colour purple (symbolizing suffering), and had their hair in dreadlocks.
They were reported to believe that the apocalypse was near.[6] A Ninja leader quoted in a 2000 report claimed that there were "almost 16,000 Ninjas in the Pool region".[2] According to a 2002 news report by IRIN News, analysts believed Ntoumi commanded "only a few hundred dedicated fighters and up to 3,000 more loosely attached", the latter of which were divided and unenthusiastic.[1] The Republic of the Congo, formerly the People's Republic of the Congo (1970–1991), abolished its Marxist-Leninist one-party system in 1991.
In the new multi-party state, rivaling political leaders formed their own militias.[7] Denis Sassou Nguesso, President for much of the one-party era, formed the Cobra militia.
Pascal Lissouba, elected President from 1992, formed the Ministerial Guard, or Cocoye militia, and the Zulu militia.[8] Bernard Kolélas, leader of the Mouvement Congolais pour la Démocratie et la Développement Integral (MCDDI) party, formed the Ninjas, recruiting from his party.[3] After the disputed 1993 elections, violent conflict between the militias began.
In this conflict, which lasted until 1994, the Ninjas were allied with Sassou Nguesso's Cobras against Lissouba's Cocoyes.[2] In December 1995, the parties in the conflict signed a peace treaty where they agreed that militiamen aged 18–24 would be integrated into the national gendarmerie and police force.[8] UNESCO also launched a plan to disarm the militias.[7] These programs to pacify the country were controversial and unsuccessful, and the militias survived.[7][8] In peacetime, the morale among the Ninjas suffered due to lack of payments.[8] The Republic of the Congo Civil War began in June 1997, when the supporters of President Lissouba (including the Army and the Cocoye, Zulu, and Mamba militias) clashed with those of Denis Sassou Nguesso (including the Cobra militia and Sassou Nguesso's sympathizers in the army).
Kolélas, then Mayor of Brazzaville, was initially neutral.
The Ninja-controlled districts of Brazzaville, Bacongo and Makélékélé therefore suffered far less casualties than the rest of the city during the first months of the war.
In September, Kolélas sided with Lissouba, and was installed as Prime Minister.
The Ninjas thus entered the war on Lissouba's side.[8] The alliance between the Ninjas and Lissouba's Cocoyes was formalized with the founding of the Mouvement National pour la Liberation du Congo (MNLC),[7] but Ninja leaders such as Claude-Ernest Ndalla and Willy Matsanga opposed the alliance and defected with their men to Sassou Nguesso's side.[8] Sassou Nguesso's forces, supported by Angola, took control of Brazzaville in October 1997, and overthrew Lissouba's government.
Sassou Nguesso returned to the presidency.[8] The Ninjas retreated to the Pool Department and fought an insurgency against the new government.[7] In 1999, leaders of the Ninjas and Cocoyes signed a ceasefire agreement.
Following the ceasefire and defeats against government forces, about 2000 Ninjas and Cocoyes surrendered to the government.
The ceasefire agreement was condemned by Kolélas.
By 1999, American sources speculated if Kolélas and Lissouba were no longer in control of their militias.[2] There were several major clashes between government forces and Ninjas in 2002 and 2003,[9] resulting in large humanitarian casualties.[10] In March 2003, Ninja leaders signed agreements with the government to cease hostilities in Pool.
Despite of the peace accords, many Ninja (militia)men remained active, and engaged in robberies of civilians and train hijackings.[5] As of 2009, active Ninja remnants still exist in the southern Pool.[11] In June 2007, Ntoumi announced that the Ninjas were "going into constructive opposition" and were determined "to work for peace in Pool and across the country".
Ninja members led by Ntoumi burned around 100 of their weapons in a ceremony in Kinkala.[5] On June 10, 2008, the National Programme of Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration (NPDDR), aiming to reintegrate ex-combatants from the wars of the 1990s and 2000s into civilian society, was launched.
Ntoumi spoke at the launching in Kinkala and announced the disbanding of the Ninjas.[12] He was offered a government post in September 2007, but remained in hiding until December 2009, when he went to Brazzaville to take up the post.[13] Bernard Kolélas died in Paris in 2009.[4] In 2016, Bintsamou again raised his forces after contested modifications of the constitution by president Sassou-Nguesso.[14] On 4 April 2016, the Congolese government accused the Ninja (militia) of attacking security forces.
The militia denied the accusations, calling them false pretext for political suppression.[14] Violence continued with events such as shelling by the Congolese armed forces and attacks on trains by the Ninja (militia).[15][16] The Congolese government and the Ninja (militia) signed a ceasefire agreement on 23 December 2017.
Pursuant to the terms of the agreement, the Ninjas were to hand over their arms and cease their interference with trade between the cities of Brazzaville and Pointe Noire.[17] According to a 2000 report by USCIS there were "numerous credible reports of grave human-rights violations committed by Ninja (militia) forces ...
including hostage-taking, torture and extrajudicial executions." An Amnesty International report cited by USCIS stated that "[f]rom June 1997, Ninja and Cocoye combatants reportedly killed hundreds and possibly thousands of unarmed civilians at roadblocks in their Bacongo and Makélékélé strongholds."[2]
The Drowning Pool is a 1975 American neo-noir[3] thriller film directed by Stuart Rosenberg, and based upon Ross Macdonald's novel of the same name.
The film stars Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Anthony Franciosa, and is a loose sequel to Harper.
The setting is shifted from California to Louisiana.
Los Angeles-based private investigator Lew Harper flies to Louisiana to do a job for his ex-flame, Iris Devereaux.
She believes the family's ex-chauffeur is the person who is blackmailing her with the knowledge that she has cheated on her husband.
The husband does not care, but his mother, Olivia Devereaux, is the family matriarch and runs the family estate with an iron, unforgiving grip.
Even before his investigation begins, Harper is approached in his motel room by a teenaged girl.
He sends her away, but later he discovers that the teenager is Iris Devereaux's daughter, Schuyler.
Their meeting in the motel room brings Harper to the attention of police chief Broussard and the disagreeable Lieutenant Franks.
Broussard accepts Harper's explanation, but tells him he will be following what Harper does, as he has a personal interest in the Devereaux family.
Harper is abducted by two hoods working for the oil magnate J.J.
Kilbourne, who thinks Harper might be useful in his efforts to get ownership of some of Olivia Devereaux's oil-rich properties, which she is content to maintain as bird sanctuaries.
Harper is noncommittal towards Kilbourne, and the hoods return him to his car.
On Harper's return, he learns that the dead body of Olivia Devereaux has just been found and the police's prime suspect is the ex-chauffeur.
While searching for the chauffeur, Harper is abducted again, this time by hoods working for a mysterious woman.
He does not have any useful information for her and is released; he later finds out she is Mavis Kilbourne, the wife of the oil magnate.
She is working behind her husband's back trying to find an account book containing information of his illicit business dealings, which he is desperate to recover and would kill her over if he knew she had a hand in its disappearance.
Harper tracks down the chauffeur, Pat Reavis.
He calls it in to the police and makes Reavis drive them back to the Devereaux estate.
En route, Reavis, whom Harper found with $10,000 in his possession, denies involvement in blackmailing Iris and murdering Olivia, claiming he was at the scene of the murder because he had been having an affair with Schuyler.
However, he admits to having information that he expects will yield a lot of money, and offers Harper a share of it if he will let him go.
The car they are in is forced off the road by masked gunmen, who shoot Reavis dead and shoot at, but miss, Harper.
Despite the ever-growing body count in what started as a simple case of blackmail, and despite Iris's pleading with him to give up on the case and go home, Harper continues investigating.
He correctly deduces that Reavis came into possession of the missing account book and must have given it to a trusted girlfriend for safekeeping.
Realizing further that Lieutenant Franks must have been involved in the killing of Reavis, Harper ambushes Franks in his own home and forces him to admit he does jobs for J.J.
Kilbourne.
When Harper later confronts Kilbourne with the information, the oil magnate admits to having hired Reavis, but insists it was only to spy on Olivia Devereaux, not to kill her.
When Harper tells Kilbourne he knows about the missing account book, Kilbourne offers him a fortune for it, but Harper just walks away.
This leads to the climactic scene of the film's title, with J.J.
Kilbourne and his henchman torturing Harper and Mavis to find out where the notebook is, their desperate attempt to escape, and several more deaths, including a final one that results in police chief Broussard confronting Harper despairingly.
The novel was published in 1950.
The New York Times called it one of the best mysteries of the year.[4] In 1966, a film was made of a Lew Archer novel called Harper, starring Paul Newman.
The character of Archer was renamed "Harper" for the movie.
It was based on a script by William Goldman, who then wrote a follow-up Archer adaptation, based on The Chill, but that movie was never made.
In April 1973, producers David Foster and Lawrence Turman announced they had optioned the rights to the novel The Drowning Pool for director Robert Mulligan and had hired Walter Hill to adapt it.[5] Hill did a draft, saying he "tried to toughen up the material and put a little more muscle in Lew Archer's pants, which was probably a mistake.
Certainly, the studio and the producers ended up feeling that way; their main criticism was MacDonald's fans don't respond to physical action.
They may have been right, but I thought going in the direction they wanted with the script was a highway to dullsville."[6] Hill said this prompted him to "more or less jump ship" to go and make his directorial debut Hard Times.[6] Hill says that when he became involved, Paul Newman was not attached to the film, and that when Hill left the project, so did Mulligan, too.[6] Eventually, Paul Newman agreed to star.
This meant the film was co-produced by First Artists at Warner Bros.
By July 1974, Joanne Woodward had agreed to co-star and Lorenzo Semple had rewritten the script.[7] Producer Foster says it was Woodward's suggestion to relocate the story from California to Louisiana, as she felt it would offer a point of difference.[8] By September 1974, Tracy Keenan Wynn, who had earned a strong reputation writing TV movies, was working on the screenplay.[9] Hill said that later Eric Roth did some writing on it.[6] Jack Garfein said his agent pitched Garfein to direct the movie and Newman was agreeable, but then Stewart Rosenberg approached Newman asking for the job, saying he was going through personal problems and was "desperate" for the job, so Newman chose Rosenberg.[10] Originally, the plan was to call the lead character "Dave Ryan" so the film would not be confused as a sequel to Harper.
Then a few weeks before preproduction, it was decided that it was "foolish to make this change" (Foster) and the character ended up being called "Harper".[8] Newman said, "a character like Harper is very easy.
It's great fun to get up in the morning and play Harper."[11] The film was shot in late 1974.
Location filming occurred in Lafayette and New Orleans.[12] The melody to the international hit song "Killing Me Softly with His Song" is heard playing in the background of several scenes in the film.
At the time the film was being made, Paramount was producing a TV series based on the Lew Archer novels starring Brian Keith.[13] Before the movie came out, a film buyer said, "you're sure it's going to be a disaster because Stuart Rosenberg-ooh! What has Stuart Rosenberg got on Paul Newman? I mean, after WUSA, how could anyone .
.
.? This man has got to be the Otto Preminger of grade-B movies.
He just hasn't made a commercial movie in years, and people still give him big properties."[14] Hill later estimated that only two minor scenes in the film were true to his adaptation.[15] He said, "[he] wasn't too crazy about the movie."[6] The movie was nominated as best picture of the year by the Edgar Allan Poe Awards.
A.H.
Weiler of The New York Times said in the review: "Under Stuart Rosenberg's muscular but pedestrian direction, the script, adapted from (Ross Macdonald's) 1950 novel, transports our hero from his native California to present-day New Orleans and its bayou environs.
...
Of course, Mr.
Newman's Harper survives beatings, traps, and a variety of enticing offers with quips, charm, and inherent decency projected in underplayed, workman-like style.
If his performance is not outstanding, it is a shade more convincing than the characterizations of the other principals, who emerge as odd types and not as fully fleshed, persuasive individuals.
...
Unfortunately, the performances and such authentic facets as Cajun talk, bayous, New Orleans and an imposing, white-pillared, antebellum mansion set amid wide lawns and ancient live oaks, serve only to make The Drowning Pool a mildly interesting diversion." [16] Roger Ebert gave the film a mixed 2-stars out of a possible 4 rating.
He wrote that the basic premise of The Drowning Pool was "straightforward thriller material, and could have made a decent B movie, but since "The Drowning Pool" is a Paul Newman vehicle, it goes first class, and that turns out to be fatal.
So much attention is given to making the movie look good visually that the story gets mislaid..."[17] The film was a disappointment at the box office in the United States and Canada, earning rentals of $2.6 million,[2] but it performed better elsewhere, especially in Italy, France, Spain, and South Africa, and was expected to earn worldwide rentals of $8 million.[1] The Drowning Pool was released on November 14, 2006, as part of the Paul Newman Collection DVD box set.
Raven's Nest was a professional wrestling stable led by Raven that was present in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) between 1995 and 1997.
Later, Raven created other incarnations of the group in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) such as The Flock and The Dead Pool, and in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) such as The Gathering and Serotonin.
Raven's Nest was a large stable with a frequently fluctuating membership in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), consisting of Raven's followers, henchmen, paramours and several hired guns.
The Nest chiefly assisted Raven throughout his feuds with Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman.
Over the years, Raven's Nest members and allies included: Stevie Richards, Tony Stetson, Johnny Hotbody, The Pitbulls, The Blue Meanie, the Dudley Boyz, Cactus Jack, Beulah McGillicutty, Francine, Kimona Wanalaya, Lupus, Lori and Tyler Fullington (as part of his feud with The Sandman), and Chastity.
The Flock was Raven's faction founded in August 1997 soon after his debut in World Championship Wrestling (WCW).[2] All wrestlers in the faction adopted Raven's grunge gimmick, complete with similar ring attire.
Unlike other factions in WCW at the time, the group (though popular) met with limited success and lost most of their matches.
The group disbanded after former member Perry Saturn won the rest of the members' freedom from Raven on September 13, 1998 at Fall Brawl.
The Flock is best remembered for hanging around in the crowd (usually at ringside) and then pouncing on any given wrestler, usually without provocation.
Each member of the Flock was a social outcast for one reason or another and sought acceptance within the Flock: The Dead Pool (originally called the Necro Ward) was another stable centered on Raven.
It was first put together in August 1999 while Raven was in WCW and saw him teaming up with Vampiro and the Insane Clown Posse (ICP) (Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope).
When Raven quit WCW and went back to ECW a month after the group's inception, Vampiro and ICP stayed together under the moniker the Dark Carnival and continued without him.
The group has since resurfaced numerous times, including in ICP's Juggalo Championship Wrestling (JCW) where ICP formed another version of the group, the Dead Pool 2000, with the addition of Balls Mahoney as well as various independent promotions where Raven and ICP team together.
Members included: When Raven joined Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), he formed a new version of the Flock, this time calling them The Gathering.
The original Gathering members were Julio Dinero and Alexis Laree, with CM Punk joining the group soon after its inception.
Punk and Dinero played 'adoring Raven fanboy' gimmicks, making Raven the main focus of the group.
Alexis left both the group and TNA after being signed to a contract by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
On December 17, 2003, Punk and Dinero turned on Raven during a six-man steel cage match.
Raven disappeared from TNA, while Punk and Dinero joined up with longtime Raven-enemy James Mitchell and continued to wrestle under the Gathering tag team name.
The team came to an abrupt end when Punk left TNA to remain in Ring of Honor (ROH).
As well, Dinero was eventually released.
Mitchell disappeared for over a year before returning in July 2005 as the manager of Abyss, continuing their feud for a short time.
Members included: On the November 16, 2006 episode of Impact!, Kazarian, Maverick Matt, and Johnny Devine appeared with drastically changed appearances, calling themselves The New Movement.[1] Later, through a series of vignettes, they revealed their name to be Serotonin, referencing the brain chemical of the same name that regulates, among other things, aggression, moodiness, and depression – things the Raven character has been linked to since its inception.
Raven's involvement with Serotonin began differently than with other incarnations of The Flock.
Instead of speaking for the group during promos and being around at ringside during matches, Raven was only seen after matches, when he would come to the ring to hit the members with a kendo stick, regardless of the result of the match, as part of a program referred to as "torture builds success".
The members would drop to their knees and took their licks without complaint, for the most part.
The only dissension of being hit was that of Kazarian on occasion, but this was defused by the other members instead of Raven.
Serotonin wrestled mostly on dark matches before pay-per-views and lost the majority of them.
When wrestling in singles competition, members often took the role of jobbers to more established stars such as Kurt Angle, Sting or Jerry Lynn.
Serotonin picked up their first official win at Against All Odds, defeating the team of Sonjay Dutt and Jay Lethal following interference from Maverick Matt.
On the March 8, 2007 episode of Impact!, it was announced that Raven had changed their names: renaming Kazarian to Kaz, Maverick Matt to Martyr, and Johnny Devine to Havok.
Dissension on the part of Kaz became more apparent during the Lockdown pre-show, in which Kaz refused to allow Christy Hemme to be attacked by Raven after Serotonin's loss to Voodoo Kin Mafia.
Serotonin retaliated to this, distracting and therefore costing Kaz in a match against Chris Sabin on the March 31, 2007 episode of Impact!.
On the June 21, 2007 episode of Impact!, Kaz turned on Serotonin by costing Raven a match against Chris Harris.
On the July 12, 2007 episode of Impact!, Kaz defeated Martyr and Havok in a three-way match to earn a spot in the Ultimate X match at Victory Road.
Kaz was subsequently attacked by Raven and the remaining members of Serotonin.
Kaz defeated Raven in a match at Hard Justice.
Bentley was later released by TNA, leaving only Havok and Raven as Serotonin members.
Raven made few appearances in the succeeding months, some of which involved Raven and Havok aligning with Black Reign and James Mitchell, who were attempting to destroy Mitchell's longtime enemy and kayfabe son Abyss.
On the November 15 episode of Impact!, Havok was revealed to be Team 3D's X Division traitor and reverting to his Johnny Devine ring name, effectively ending Serotonin.

McCarren Park is a public park in Brooklyn, New York City.
It is located on the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint and is bordered by Nassau Avenue, Bayard Street, Lorimer Street and North 12th Street.
It is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
Opened in 1906 and originally named Greenpoint Park, the park was renamed McCarren Park in 1909 after State Senator Patrick H.
McCarren (1849–1909), who began work as a cooper at Williamsburg sugar refineries and eventually became the Democratic boss of Brooklyn.
The park is a popular destination for recreational softball, volleyball, soccer, handball, and other games.
It is also used for sunbathing and dog-walking.
In late 2004, the park's track was resurfaced and has been a popular destination for running enthusiasts.
Events on the baseball fields of McCarren Park include members of the punk and indie communities gathering to participate in league-controlled kickball tournaments.
For several years, the baseball fields have hosted tournament play for the Hasidim; weekend afternoons provide T-ball and softball games for organized area youth groups; Latino families and friends often utilize the fields to play soccer and volleyball into the late hours of the night.
Since June 2003, McCarren Park has hosted SummerScreen in McCarren Park, and The Renegade Craft Fair, a DIY event.
The fair attracts artists and creative types, featuring a wide range of merchandise such as reconstructed clothing, comic books, tote bags and other handmade goods.
McCarren Pool was the eighth and largest of the eleven giant pools[1] that were built by the Works Progress Administration to provide safe swimming facilities for all New York City residents.
Mayor Fiorello La Guardia attended the dedication on July 31, 1936.
With an original capacity for 6800 swimmers, the pool served as the summertime social hub for Greenpoint and Williamsburg.
The building's vast scale and dramatic arches, designed by Aymar Embury II, typify the generous and heroic spirit of New Deal architecture.
The pool was closed in 1984.[1][2] It quickly became blighted, and covered in graffiti.
The bathhouse buildings were broken into and extensively vandalized, until they were sealed up sometime around 1989.
The pool was also used in a chase seen in the 1984 movie Vigilante.
The reuse and reconstruction of the pool remained a contentious community issue for many years, until the community came to a consensus plan in 2001.
The community sought to reconstruct the facility to encompass a skate park, an indoor recreation/performance center, and a smaller pool that could be converted to a seasonal ice rink.
The plan was estimated to cost $26 million and had a good chance of receiving public funding, but the budgetary constraints of the City in post-9/11 shelved the plan and the pool remained closed for the next few years.
In 2005, Clear Channel Entertainment gave $250,000 to the City Parks Foundation, a private non-profit entity, to do basic stabilization and safety improvements to the pool structure.
The first public event in the pool, a dance performance called Agora, choreographed by Noemie Lafrance, was held by Sens Production that summer.[2] In fall of the same year, the City Parks Department sought an entity to manage events on site for the summer of 2006.
In the summer of 2006, a number of free and cheap public events were held at the pool, including the free SummerScreen film series, Jelly NYC's pool party series and the Williamsburg Film Festival.
That summer also saw Clear Channel Entertainment's concert-promotion arm, Live Nation, put on a series of six concerts that were ticketed for $45-$52 (including ticket service fees).
By early 2007, the pool was again being used for concerts, film screenings and other events.
The park was substantially renovated in the 21st century, including its swimming pool and the restoration of a bath house and a recreation center: In 2001 McCarren Park's ballfield was renovated at a cost of $560,000 and the handball and boccie courts were updated at a cost of $601,000.
A $1.7 million project in 2006 renovated the park's well used running track and soccer field, and new lighting was added in 2008 at a cost of $1.1 million[3]Meanwhile, as part of the 2005 rezoning of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, the City appropriated $1 million in capital budget funds for restoration of the pool as a performance space.
Also, $300,000 was allocated by the New York City Council in 2006 to support the construction of a seasonal rink.
During early 2007, many in the community expressed a preference that the pool be returned to its historic use as an active recreational facility, with a smaller space dedicated to cultural and concert events.
In April 2007, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that reconstruction of the pool would move forward, funded as part of the City's PlaNYC long-term planning initiative.
Total budget was announced as $50 million, with construction slated to start by 2009.[4] Before reconstruction began, the site continued to be used as a large concert venue.
In 2008, Wolf Eyes, Times New Viking and Vivian Girls opened for Sonic Youth on August 30.
The plan brought to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in September 2008 did call for a performance space to be included, but only as a portion of extensive refurbishment with a new pool, an ice-skating rink, a cafe, a community center, and an exhibition center.[5] The Commission approved the renovation plan on September 9, 2008.[6] Final design renderings were completed in February 2009,[7] and renovation work began in December 2009.
As renovation work progressed, the bathhouse buildings were finally unsealed.
The LTV Squad urban exploration team again went inside and documented the building interiors, revealing a virtual time-capsule of 1980s graffiti which lay untouched over the previous two decades.[8] The graffiti was completely removed during the renovation.
The pool reopened on June 28, 2012.
The rush of large crowds and long lineups during the first few days resulted in some skirmishes between bathers and lifeguards, injuries to two police officers, litter and graffiti on nearby streets, and unease among local citizens.[9][10] In 2013, work was begun to remove "Hipster Lake", a puddle of water that was annoying users of the park's fields.[11] During Summer 2018, the running track and turf soccer field were closed for renovations.

After the match, Richard Holliday joined MJF in attacking Hart.[12] As a result, the duo formed a team called The Dynasty and began feuding with Hart Foundation.
They were shortly after joined by the newcomer Alexander Hammerstone.
He later won the MLW World Tag Team Championship with Richard Holliday as part of the Dynasty.
He would leave the promotion in January 2020.[13] On January 7, 2019, it was announced that Friedman was signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW).[14] He debuted as a heel at Double or Nothing as a part of the pre-show Casino Battle Royale for an AEW World Championship opportunity.

Cody lost the match after MJF threw in the towel when he was in a submission hold and as a result, Cody is no longer allowed to challenge for the AEW World Championship again due to a pre-match stipulation.
After the match, MJF turned on Cody by kicking him in the groin and walked away.[20] Shortly thereafter, MJF would find a bodyguard with the debuting Wardlow.[21] On the November 20 episode of Dynamite, MJF and Adam Page would be the final two entrants in the inaugural Dynamite Dozen Battle Royale.[22] The two would meet in a singles match on the following Dynamite, which MJF would win.
He was then awarded the Dynamite Diamond Ring as a prize for defeating Page.[23] At Bash at the Beach on January 15, 2020, MJF teamed with The Butcher and The Blade to defeat Diamond Dallas Page, Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall.[24] MJF would rekindle his rivalry with Cody, and lay down 3 stipulations that Cody must follow to gain a match against him at AEW Revolution which included not touching MJF till the match happened, facing Wardlow in a steel cage match and receiving ten lashes by MJF on live TV.[25] On the February 5, 2020 episode of Dynamite, Cody took the ten lashes from MJF, including one from Wardlow.
[26] Cody would then go on to beat Wardlow in the first steel cage match in AEW's history on the February 19 episode of Dynamite to make the match against MJF at AEW Revolution official.[27] At AEW Revolution, MJF would defeat Cody by pinfall after hitting him on the face with the Dynamite Diamond Ring.[28] MJF would then enter a feud with Jungle Boy, defeating him with a roll-up while holding his tights, giving him extra leverage.[29] On the May 27 episode of Dynamite, MJF would unsuccessfully compete in a battle royal to face Cody for the AEW TNT Championship, being eliminated by Jungle Boy.[30] Friedman is Jewish.
He graduated from Plainview – Old Bethpage John F.
Kennedy High School in Plainview, NY in 2014.

He briefly attended Hartwick College.[32] In 2001, Friedman appeared on an episode of The Rosie O'Donnell Show, singing "You Are My Sunshine" after his parents submitted a tape of him singing it while eating a pear.
After a video of his performance resurfaced in 2019, Friedman (in character) initially denied the appearance before admitting it, stating that Rosie O'Donnell was trying to cling onto her fading star and that he "didn't have the nerve" to tell Britney Spears (who appeared on the same episode) that she "wasn't going to make it as a singer."[33]

Red vs.

The story centers on two opposing teams of soldiers fighting a civil war in the middle of a desolate box canyon (Blood Gulch) in a parody of first-person shooter (FPS) games, military life, and science fiction films.
Initially intended to be a short series of six to eight episodes, the project quickly and unexpectedly achieved significant popularity following its Internet premiere on April 1, 2003.
In its run, the series has had seventeen full seasons and five mini-series that extended the series' plot.
The fifth season of the original Blood Gulch Chronicles series ended with episode 100, released on June 28, 2007.
Three mini-series—Out of Mind, Recovery One, and Relocated —and the three-part Recollection trilogy containing the full-length Reconstruction (2008), Recreation (2009) and Revelation (2010) series (Seasons 6-8) have extended the plot.
The Project Freelancer saga began with Season 9 (2011) and follows two separate stories: a continuation to the Recollection trilogy and a prequel set before the events of The Blood Gulch Chronicles.
The two stories are continued in two further mini-series—MIA and Where There's a Will, There's a Wall—and concluded in Season 10 (2012).
Burnie Burns confirmed in What's Trending that the series would continue with Season 11, which premiered on June 14, 2013; and Season 11 was later followed by Season 12 and Season 13.
In 2016, Season 14 was released as the first anthology season, consisting of several canon and non-canon stories created by in-house writers as well as several outside writers; Freddie Wong of RocketJump, Chris Roberson (creator of iZOMBIE), Ben Singer and Chad James of Death Battle, Ernest Cline (author of Ready Player One and Armada), Arin Hanson and Dan Avidan of Game Grumps, etc.
Season 15 debuted in 2017, continuing the canonical story following the events of Season 13.
In March, Joe Nicolosi announced Season 16 which focused the events after the last season with a reduced episode count.
Nicolosi stepped down after Season 16 concluded, with Jason Weight taking over writing duties and both Josh Ornelas and Austin Clark taking over directing duties for Season 17, which had an even more reduced episode count.
On January 15 2020, Season 18 was confirmed to be in development with a brief 3-second clip being shown in a promo trailer for upcoming Rooster Teeth releases.[1] While Church and Tucker lament their current situation, Caboose hops into the tank.
The tank's Artificial Intelligence (AI) introduces itself as Sheila, and runs him through the tutorial mode.
In an attempt to sneak up on the Blues, Grif and Simmons leave the Warthog and unsuccessfully try to go around the rock.
Seeing that the Reds have abandoned their vehicle, Church and Tucker decide to grab it.
The tank drives up behind the Reds.
Grif and Simmons, in fear, attempt to make a run for the Warthog.
The tank, meanwhile, takes aim at Grif.
Tucker and Caboose catch up to Lopez, who refuses to re-join them and instead orates at length about oppression and the advent of a new day for his people.
Sarge and Simmons try to run him over with the Warthog having mistaken him for a Blue soldier, but Lopez activates the Warthog's remote destruction sequence in self-defense and, feeling betrayed, defects to the Blues.
Caboose is jealous of the relationship between Lopez and Sheila, who are now refusing to work due to perceived poor treatment by the soldiers — that is, being repeatedly blown up, possessed or left outside to rust.
Eventually, they consider forming their own robot army.
At the Red Base, Sarge sends Grif and Donut out to try to spy on the Blue Team.
While on the mission, Grif, who cannot stand Donut's childish behavior, tricks him into exploring the caves by himself.
Donut then spots Doc and O'Malley talking to each other, in the manner of Gollum and Sméagol in The Lord of the Rings.
Overhearing O'Malley's evil plans, Donut tries to return to his base, only to become lost and eventually captured at the Blue Base.
As a note, "Nut.
Doonut." — a reference to James Bond's introduction, "Bond.
James Bond." and use of two 0's in his agent number, 007 — is the episode title as listed on the Rooster Teeth website and on the Red vs.
Blue: Season Two DVD.
However, the six versions downloadable from the Internet show different titles, each another reference to the James Bond series (specifically, the six starring Sean Connery): O'Malley activates Lopez's "secret weapon", a weather control device that Sarge had almost finished.
The Red and Blue Teams join forces to confront O'Malley, who begins to wreak havoc with his rocket launcher.
Simmons manages to teleport the Battle Creek zealots to Sidewinder and convinces them to attack and defeat O'Malley.
Lightning from Lopez's weather device hits Church, thereby damaging the bomb in his body.
When Sarge is subsequently unable to disable the bomb, Tucker tries to destroy Church with O'Malley's rocket launcher before Church explodes, but Wyoming snipes the launcher out of Tucker's hand.
The bomb explodes and, due to the damage received from the lightning, destroys the present as well, sending both teams (except Church) to the future (Halo 2).
Donut attempts to direct a play to explain this sequence of events to Tucker.
The group reasons that they were blown into the future because they were standing in front of Church; Tucker deduces that Church must have been blown into the past.
Meanwhile, on a Marathon 2 map, Church appears, wondering what has happened.
The computer completes the teleporter and reveals its name to be Gary.
Church teleports back to Blood Gulch shortly before the series begins.
The moment Church is teleported away, however, another Church runs in and tells Gary to teleport him to Sidewinder instead, because he "screwed everything up." A deliberate error is employed as a joke as after 1000 years of waiting, Church has grown a four-foot white beard, yet he is inhabiting a robot body.
Back at Blood Gulch prior to the events of episode 1, this Future Church decides to try to prevent the death of Tex, which would prevent O'Malley from escaping and causing the events leading up to The Great Doom.
He finds, however, that he either has no effect, or causes the events by his presence in the first place: Lopez's legs malfunction because Future Church, in trying to get him a larger switch, kicked dirt into the switch Sarge decided to use when building the robot.
Prior to episode 1, the Blues were under the charge of Captain Butch Flowers.
Knowing Flowers would die, Future Church gives him aspirin, but Flowers dies of a heart attack due to an allergy of the medicine.
Tucker, at this point in Blue armor, takes Flowers' cyan armor.
Donut, in rookie Red armor, finds the Blue Base and steals the flag because Future Church, failing to recognize him outside of pink armor, gives him directions.
Future Church attempts to prevent the death of his past self, which would stop Tex from arriving in Blood Gulch.
He awakens the tank and runs through her protocols to try to prevent her from shooting him later.
She refers to herself as Phyllis, and overrides her name when Church addresses her as Sheila.
Future Church turns off a "friendly fire protocol," which in actuality prevents friendly fire; thus the original Church's death takes place because of Future Church.
Finding a sniper rifle on the corpse of his past self, Future Church picks it up but drops it later.
Caboose finds it, and uses it to shoot Sarge.
The funeral of Church and Tex, prior to the events of Season 2, takes place.
Future Church continues his attempts to change things for the better, but still ends up causing the disasters he was trying to prevent: Future Church, posing as Captain Flowers, contacts Vic to try to get him to tell the Reds to get rid of Doc, to stop the medic from being infected by O'Malley.
Vic misconstrues his words to believe the Red and Blue teams have merged, but that the soldiers must not know.
Thus, the Red and Blue Commands merge.
To stop them from making a robot army, Future Church tries to dissuade Lopez and Sheila from the idea.
Instead, he gives them the idea himself, and they decide to build and hide a rocket-launching vehicle in the caves.
Future Church decides to fix the Red teleporter before it malfunctions and sends the characters to various places, just as Sheila rams the base.
Future Church is knocked out, and the teleporter begins giving off sparks.
Future Church watches Tex, Donut and Tucker leave for Sidewinder, and soon follows them.
He talks first to Sheila before leaving for Sidewinder, asking her to do him an inaudible favor.
Once at Sidewinder, Future Church finds his past self and Grif in prison, and opens their cell by pressing a button in another room.
He attempts to contact Tex, who is currently being held by O'Malley and Wyoming, before another Church approaches him.
This new Church claims that he fails to stop the bomb, and gets blown back in time again, only to return to Sidewinder.
He then tells Future Church to "meet us at the top of the ramp." The bomb goes off, and Future Church is sent back in time.
As seen in Episode 50, as soon as Church is teleported by Gary to Blood Gulch, Future Church arrives and asks to be sent to Sidewinder because he screwed everything up.
Just then, more Churches arrive, each having been unsuccessful to stop the bomb, and thus sent back in time to Gary.
These Churches all meet in Sidewinder, and explain to the newest Church how their various plans failed.
It is determined that whichever Church did each one of these plans already must be the successful Church, since he isn't sent back in time again.
This Church gives up on trying to correct everything, instead freeing Tex, and rejoining the Blood Gulch soldiers before the explosion, thus being sent into the future.
O'Malley berates Lopez for creating such a slow moving army.
In revenge, Lopez tricks O'Malley into insulting himself in Spanish.
The Reds flee the battle in the Warthog to track down the distress signal.
Donut is left behind to discourage pursuit, but manages to steal O'Malley's hovercraft and rejoin his teammates.
Tex steals Tucker's sword so she can fight the robots; Church decides that she must be The Great Destroyer from the prophecy, even when Gary said the Great Destroyer was a blue being.
An unseen figure wipes out O'Malley's army with a volley of plasma grenades, and then attacks a startled O'Malley.
Lopez's fate is left unrevealed.
The episode opens up again at the Zanzibar fortress as Tucker and Caboose are attempting to teach English to the Alien.
Church and Tucker get into a small debate on whether they should teach the alien English or learn his language.
Tucker is convinced that they should teach English to the Alien and even had created some visual aids.
As it turns out, Tucker was able to get the writing supplies from Caboose's gun which apparently contained crayons instead of bullets.
However, when Tucker activates his energy sword to cut the poster boards, the Alien jumps over and attacks him.
Despite Tucker's cries for help, Church watches the Alien as it attacks Tucker in order to "evaluate" his fighting style.
Back at Blood Gulch, Simmons is at the Blue base with Sheila close by.
He attempts to contact the Red Base, but is greeted with Donut on the line, who tries to impersonate an answering machine.
Simmons attempts to get Sarge on the line, but Donut, under instructions from an off-screen Sarge, denies Simmons from communicating with Sarge, even after he informed Donut that he had captured the Blue Base and Sheila.
Eventually Donut hangs up on Simmons, but not before letting Simmons know that he really enjoys his new job as Sarge's right-hand man.
Simmons then declares that he will kill all the Reds and tells Sheila to "lock and load".
At Zanzibar, Tex and Church argue over whether to let Andy translate what the Alien is saying.
Church is concerned that Andy's lack of manners could upset the alien even further.
Eventually, Church relents and agrees to this arrangement out of his curiosity as to what could happen.
During this whole conversation the Alien is still beating Tucker to a pulp.
At Blood Gulch, the Reds are fracturing even more as Donut is unsuccessful in asking Grif to return to their base.
Grif refuses, believing Sarge simply wants him to do work, and not just eat ice cream.
In reality, Sarge did want Grif to help him eat some of the ice cream that he found.
Simmons—now painted mostly blue—plays out his vengeance on the Reds.
At first he attempts to cause the Reds to be jealous of him; he soon gives up and orders Sheila to attack the Red base.
On Zanzibar's beach, Tucker finds himself as an involuntary sword-bearer as he is forced to partake in a sacred quest.
After the Alien explains the lands that he and Tucker will travel through, Church informs Tucker (the fighter) that Caboose (the wizard), Andy (the archer), and the alien (the healer) will be the team that goes out on this quest.
Though this quest is pretty much a suicide mission, Tucker does warn Church that he better hope that Tucker survives, or he will be forced to take care of any children that Tucker might have.
On the beach of Zanzibar, Church tries to give some last-minute advice and parting words to Tucker and the rest of the quest-team before they begin their trip.
Tex apparently has a strong attraction to masculine objects, whether it was Tucker's energy sword, or the Alien's rather muscular naked body, or specifically one part of it.
Church attempts to say some encouraging words to Tucker, but this fails as Tucker frustrates Church's attempts.
As the team leaves, Church remarks to Tex that he is surprised that she did not go with the rest of the group as quests usually have a goal of riches or power at the end of them.
As he finishes his sentence, he assumes correctly that Tex has left.
Having arrived at the Great Burning Plains (Burial Mounds), the Sacred Quest team prepares to perform one of the many tasks that the hero of the Alien's prophecy is supposed to do.
As the team argues and bickers, it is revealed by the Alien and Andy that they know what Earth is, and that they don't have a favorable opinion about the planet.
Apparently, the Alien's race invented the telephone a thousand years before humans did, which, however, fails to impress Tucker, due to the limited verbal communication of the alien race.
In the meantime, Caboose scouts ahead and claims to recognize the area.
The Alien warns the group that they are about to encounter a monster, which they have to conquer by distracting it and hitting its weak spot.
Tucker is unmotivated about the plan, even to the extent of having paid no attention to the details of the monster's weak spot.
After they finally leap down the last ridge, they see the skull of the monster, which Tucker realizes is that of a cow, with a broken skull as the only visible remains, possibly due to one of the Red and Blue Teams' scavenging missions in season 3 (episodes 43–46); Caboose confirms to Andy and the Alien that they had been there before.
Sarge and Donut enter the Blue Base to rescue Grif without encountering any perimeter defense, such as Sheila.
Inside the base, Grif is still playing with the gravity lift that Simmons originally mistook for a hole.
As Grif runs to and fro on it, both Simmons and he question how Sheila was able to upgrade the base without any tools or arms.
Simmons then concludes that if he could somehow determine the real truth, he could reconcile with Sarge.
At this point, Sarge intervenes, knocking Grif out.
Before Sarge can execute Simmons for treason, however, Church appears and knocks Sarge out from behind.
Church mistakes the mostly blue Simmons as a Blue soldier native to the future.
In the basement of the Blue Base in Blood Gulch, Simmons covertly talks to Donut about keeping his true identity hidden from Church.
Donut, however, does not actually recognize Simmons.
Church soon appears after dropping Sarge's body into the basement, and the three proceed to load Sarge and Grif into the jeep.
Meanwhile, the Sacred Quest team reaches the edge of the Great Freezing Plains (Containment) that the Alien had mentioned.
This particular part of the quest requires that the hero gain access to the temple ahead, which is heavily guarded by a large number of guards.
With this information, Tucker wants to retrace their steps to recover a mitten that Caboose lost, but Tex takes the initiative and decides to attack the temple guards under the protection of her cloaking device.
Back at the Freezing Plains, Tex attempts her covert attack inside the temple guarded by the Red and Blue Grunts who first appeared at Battle Creek.
Sneaking up behind a blue Grunt, she attempts to knock him out, without much success.
Although she has to spend time beating and shooting him, the others pay no attention to his exclamations of pain and complaint.
It is only when Tucker yells in reaction to their aloofness that they begin to fire.
Now under attack, the rest of Sacred Quest team runs for cover while Tex kills the remaining soldiers in the temple.
In Blood Gulch, Church relishes the fact that the Blue Team now possesses all three vehicles within the canyon.
Sheila, however, is unhappy and begins to show signs of jealousy and annoyance—this portion was moved to the Deleted Scenes section of the DVD.
Back at the Freezing Plains, Andy frantically orders Tucker to open gates of the temple by using his sword as the key.
The doors open, revealing an alien ship.
The Alien rushes towards the ship, dropping Andy in the snow.
Tex and Tucker become agitated, as the Alien had never disclosed—not even to Andy—that the quest would involve a ship, which Tex demands as her reward, nor that the sword would be used as a key.
After taking off in the ship, the Alien appears to make dive attack on the other Quest members; at the last moment it is shown he was firing at a Grunt sneaking up on them.
However, the Alien's ultimate intentions are left ambiguous, as Wyoming suddenly guns the ship down.
As Tex leaves to pursue Wyoming for destroying her reward (the events of which are portrayed in the miniseries Red vs.
Blue: Out of Mind), the Battle Creek soldiers begin to respawn, convincing Tucker and Caboose to leave.
In the Red Base, Sarge attempts to bury his disgust and hatred toward Grif in an attempt to consolidate whatever soldiers the Reds have left to fight the war with the Blues.
Sarge's own personal disdain for Grif still leaks through as he disclosed that he has attempted to murder Grif countless times while everyone was asleep.
Outside of the base, Simmons—still mostly blue—and Donut have a verbal fight.
Donut, still under the impression that Simmons is a Blue soldier, refused to allow Simmons to pass without being shot at.
Eventually, Sarge and Grif come out to see what's happening and acknowledge who Simmons really is.
Simmons, though still looked down upon by Sarge for his apparent betrayal, still wants to pass along Blue Army info to the Reds.
At the Blue Base, Tucker becomes ill.
Church and Caboose discuss Tucker's sickness, which apparently he caught when the Sacred Quest team stayed overnight in a swamp.
Church suggests the sword's power source could be giving off radiation.
Church and Caboose have a reasonably light and friendly discussion regarding the nature of the sword, as Tucker rolls in pain.
This friendly discussion even extends to Church mentioning that he would love to "live in [Caboose's] world for about 10 minutes" just to have some fun.
At the Red Base, Simmons persists in trying to enter the Red Base to relay vital information about the war to the Reds.
However, he still meets resistance from Donut and Grif until he very quickly changes out of his mostly blue armor to his original maroon armor.
Apparently Simmons learned this ability because of his extreme shyness, which has led him to never use the base's toilet for three years.
Back at the Blue Base, Church and Caboose question Andy on what might be causing Tucker's sickness and suggest that he, being a machine (and thus not able to get sick) go into the base, find out what is wrong with Tucker and report back.[5] Since Andy is a bomb, the only solution he can provide is to blow up the base with Tucker inside, killing all the germs and everything around the base in the process.
Finally, out of frustration, he tells Church and Caboose that if they want a medical diagnosis, they need to find a doctor.
With that, Caboose says to Church "Please don't do it." Simmons manages to enter the Red Base by correctly guessing the weak password established by Grif and Donut.
Simmons wants to report the Blues' plans, but Sarge still considers him a traitor and insists on holding a trial with himself as both judge and prosecutor.
This trial is quickly aborted, however, when Grif argues that Donut will want to act as a bailiff in hotpants.
As a result, Simmons' sentence is summarily commuted to the payment of a hefty fine, to be split between Sarge and Grif.
The episode begins with Sarge, Simmons, and Grif racing toward the Blue Base.
Sarge worries that, since the Blues have re-established contact with their Command, they may be receiving new intelligence, weaponry, and soldiers to aid in their efforts for the war.
Grif, however, suggests that the Blue Command could simply be giving the same "generic" instructions that Red Command has been giving the Reds.
Eventually the discussion changes gears and the Reds ponder where Donut could be.
Simmons spots him standing next to a rock, talking to something.
After taking a look through his sniper rifle, Grif sees that Donut is talking with Lopez.
Back at Blue Base, Church introduces O'Malley and Doc to Andy.
An awkward moment for O'Malley occurs when Church notes that Andy had originally been designed to kill O'Malley.
Andy feigns an explosion, frightening O'Malley.
Church and Andy share a good laugh, while O'Malley is unamused.
While Doc examines Tucker inside the Blue Base, the Reds digress into a discussion on the relative appropriateness of hand to hand combat, sniping, and nuclear warfare.
Eventually, Sarge, with Lopez's head in tow, heads out to steal Andy from the Blues.
Doc returns outside to give Church and Caboose his diagnosis of Tucker.
After prolonging his explanation of Tucker's condition for dramatic effect, he discloses that he believes Tucker is pregnant, based on the presence of two different heartbeats.
Incredulous, Church goes with Doc to confirm the diagnosis, leaving Caboose alone with Andy.
The last episode of season 4 begins as Doc tries to convince an incredulous Church of Tucker's pregnancy.[7] When Doc discloses the truth to Tucker, he does not believe him either, thinking he himself has impregnated someone and invents excuses.
Caboose enters the base with the skull, asking for help, proclaiming that Andy is dead.
After Caboose explains how he found the skull, Church decides to leave the base.
Tex reasons that ruling the Aliens would win the war.
Church, arguing O'Malley can't be trusted in a deal, begins broadcasting on an open channel to prevent O'Malley from jumping into Tex.
As Tex kills the last remaining Wyoming, O'Malley accidentally infects Simmons.
Tex knocks Simmons out, and follows O'Malley into Caboose's mind.
Church approaches the Reds and warns them to disable the ship so that O'Malley can't escape, before entering Caboose as well.
Inside Caboose's mind, Church finds Tex and O'Malley negotiating their deal to rule the Aliens.
He kills them both, causing them to leave Caboose's mind.
After killing himself, Church emerges from Caboose's head to find that in the interim Tex has taken the sword, while Junior and the New Alien have boarded the ship.
The first chapter starts off showing operatives from Project Freelancer launching a mass investigation at Outpost 17-B Valhalla after the Red and Blue teams stationed there are all mysteriously killed.
They find only one survivor, a Red Team survivor named Walter Henderson who is later questioned by a representative of the Freelancer Project called the Counselor.
The survivor reveals that he and his team investigated the crashed ship after the Blue Team got a hold of its equipment.
He then reveals how the infection started: the Blue Team started attacking each other and had destroyed both of the teams communications towers to avoid contacting any help.
Henderson said they then found out that all of the Blues have killed each other.
He then tells the Counselor his team brought the equipment back to base to look at them, which he said afterwards the infection started again for them.
He then mentions that an unknown hostile arrived and after searching Blue base, killed all the Red soldiers that had the infection, leaving Henderson the only survivor.
After Henderson is led away to be assigned new quarters, Agent Washington, who is revealed to have survived the events of Recovery One, talks with the Counselor.
Agent Washington expresses his thoughts that the same entity that attacked him is behind the attacks at Valhalla.
The Counselor tells Washington that he suspects that the "Meta" has now acquired the Omega AI.
He then assigns Washington to find help from soldiers that have "experience" fighting Omega.
These soldiers still reside at Omega's last known location: Blood Gulch.
As the episode begins, Agent Washington is in Outpost 1-A: Blood Gulch.
Unfortunately, most of the soldiers who were based in Blood Gulch during the Blood Gulch Chronicles have been assigned to new, undisclosed locations.
The only soldiers left are Sister, who believes that Washington is a "cop" and doesn't offer much help, Sarge, who has refused his reassignment orders, and Lopez, who has a new body and is aiding Sarge in guarding the Red base.
Sarge claims that he's not leaving Blood Gulch until all the Blues (Sister) are defeated.
Though Sarge proves to be more helpful than Sister, and says that Caboose can help Washington, the former having been infected by Omega briefly.
Sarge sends Lopez to get the Blue reassignment files for Washington.
As the chapter begins, Washington is now at a Blue base located at Outpost 28 ("Rat's Nest"), in order to retrieve Caboose.
There he finds that Caboose has been tied up in the brig due to his unsafe and mentally hampered nature that got all of the Blue Team's vehicles heavily damaged.
Washington takes Caboose, much to the relief of his team, although not before Caboose accidentally kills a Blue team member named Private Jones, whose name was mispronounced by the whole squad.
After they leave, a Blue soldier watching them then transforms into a white armored soldier, revealing itself to be the Meta.[16] Washington and Caboose, on the latter's advice, arrive at a small outpost in search of Church, who they discover has been the base's sole inhabitant for 14 months.
At first appearing furiously hostile, trying and failing repeatedly to shoot Caboose with the sniper rifle, he later allows Washington and Caboose to enter the base and have a conversation with him after they point out they were coming in either way due to a hole in the base's wall.
Washington outlines the mission they are on, but Church is initially reluctant, until he is told Tex's ship crash-landed at Outpost 17-B.
Upon hearing this, he agrees to go with them and the three of them depart.
From a nearby ledge, the Meta is watching them, and opens a device which lets it copy Command's voice patterns from a conversation with Washington.
The Meta uses the voice of Command to send a message to Sarge in Blood Gulch, tricking him into assembling his team to attack Washington and the Blues.
After finishing transmitting the fake message to Sarge, the Meta notices movement nearby, which turns out to be South and Delta, who are also pursuing Washington.
Unnoticed, the Meta drops to the ground and sneaks up behind them.
At Outpost 17-B, Washington is stopped from approaching the crash site by the soldiers present there.
According to the guards, the Director of Project Freelancer has ordered a total lock-down, so Washington creates a distraction to allow Church and Caboose to use a gravity lift from one of the bases to approach the crash site.
They access the ship's computer to discover that Sheila is still active, despite the ship's systems being badly damaged.
Washington and Caboose manage to activate the log of the previous flight, and observe Tex's struggle to land the ship before it crashed.
In the sponsor cut there is Andy talking in the background of the flight recording.
Washington then receives a call from Command, who tell him that a recovery beacon has been activated by the Delta AI.
Command also informs Wash that South, Delta's current host, is in "big trouble".
Washington, remembering South's past betrayal, replies with "Yes.
Yes, she is." At the base where Church was stationed, South and Delta are trapped by the Meta in South's collapsing domed energy shield.
South, seeking only self-preservation, orders Delta to store himself in a portable component, intending to abandon him alongside her shield enhancement in order to buy time for her escape.
Washington, Church, and Caboose arrive on two motorcycles, and South is wounded by Caboose to prevent her escape.
When Church learns that the Meta takes armor enhancements from other Freelancers, he reasons that it may also have Wyoming’s time distortion enhancement from the ship at Outpost-17B.
He quickly fires a rocket launcher at the Meta, who stops time to avoid the shot.
The Meta is about to shoot Washington when its armor malfunctions, ending the time distortion and forcing it to flee.
Figuring the Meta is taking refuge to repair itself, the group decides to find the Meta before it can be fully functional again.
Delta, citing South's severe wounds, is implanted in Caboose.
Once there, he informs Washington of South's intention to abandon him in order to escape, reminds Washington of her previous betrayal, and reveals that South's brother North suffered a similar fate.
Under Delta's advice, Washington executes South via a pistol shot to the head.
Church questions Delta about Washington's sanity while Washington is seen destroying South's body in the background; Delta tells Church about Epsilon, Washington's old AI that went berserk while still it was still in Washington's mind, but Delta says Washington is acceptably sane, though this doesn't comfort Church.
It is mentioned that Wyoming's helmet was on the crashed ship causing Washington to comment that the Meta is more powerful than previously thought.
Church asks why the Meta wants the AIs, so Washington reveals that some equipment cannot be run without them.
He also says that the possessor of a "smart AI" can be virtually unstoppable.
Delta is described as only a fragment and Alpha is revealed to be the only "true" AI given to Project Freelancer, which was then copied to make the rest of the AI fragments.
Eventually the AI fragments became obsessed enough to find it they broke into Alpha's storage facility.
Washington receives a recovery beacon from Agent Maine, who is suspected to be the Meta, but the transmission is jammed before they receive coordinates.
From the data they do receive it is concluded the Meta is low on power and is trying to find a power source to recharge.
Church correctly guesses that the Meta is headed for a wind-power facility that the Red and Blue teams had previously visited.
Arriving at the wind-power facility, Washington splits up from Church and Caboose, and both groups move from the beach in different directions to enter the facility.
While Church and Caboose head for the base, Church questions Delta, discovering that Washington was only one of several failures in the AI implantation experiments.
Delta suggests that Agent Maine's power troubles are only a small indication of what is happening inside his mind.
After the group find the Meta in the facility, they launch an attack which it escapes from.
Church and Washington pursue, while Caboose and Delta head in a different direction to flank the Meta and surprise him.
Before Church and Washington can find the Meta again, the Red team, composed of Sarge, Simmons and Grif, arrive in their Warthog and crash into the windmill.
As Simmons opens fire on Church and Washington from the turret, Washington asks where Caboose and Delta are.
It is then revealed that Caboose is lying motionless on the ground as the Meta approaches.
Delta projects itself from Caboose's body; when he does, the many AIs the Meta has captured project themselves too and begin to talk to Delta, all of them saying that they missed him.
Delta remains silent.
In a flashback back in Blood Gulch, Sarge receives the Meta's fake transmission from the end of Chapter 4.
It tells him that Washington is re-assembling the Blues, so he makes plans to gather the other Reds.
For reasons not stated, Sarge cannot retrieve Donut, leaving only Simmons and Grif.
He then tells Lopez that he's leaving him behind, to Lopez's delight, and departs.
At Grif and Simmons's new base, both are about to be executed for selling their ammunition to the Blues when they are unwittingly saved from death by the firing squad by Sarge's arrival.
Sarge takes them both with him, unable to comprehend that Grif is the Red base's sergeant, even after countless attempts trying to explain it to him.
Sarge, Simmons and Grif eventually depart, leaving the remaining Reds utterly bewildered at what just happened.
The episode begins with Sarge, Grif and Simmons attacking Agent Washington and Church.
Washington and Church doubt that the Reds are actually working for The Meta, so after checking Caboose's vitals via Biocom, Washington also wonders why the Biocom does not work on Church normally.
Washington then uses his armor's megaphone to tell the Reds to stop firing.
The Reds stand down after Washington gives Sarge the correct codeword, which was again 'codeword'.
Meanwhile, the Meta starts to recharge itself and disguises itself as a Red.
Grif, not believing Washington and Church, confronts the disguised Meta, and asks him for help.
The Meta then lifts up a Warthog and throws it at Grif, who flees.
Washington and Church then confirm that the Reds are not in allegiance with The Meta after Grif and the rolling chassis of the Warthog pass by their hiding spot.
The Reds are attacked by the Meta leading Sarge and Simmons to take shelter with Washington and Church, while Grif hides behind a pile of debris.
Washington leaves to check on Caboose and finds him unconscious and Delta missing.
He then attacks the Meta with a machine gun, but the Meta again uses his temporal distortion enhancement to escape.
The group assembles around Caboose, who is unable to wake up despite clear vital signs.
Simmons suggests that Church enter Caboose's mind to find out what is incapacitating him.
Church agrees as long as Washington is distracted so that he isn't traumatized.
As Simmons distracts Washington, Church leaves his body, becomes a ghost and enters Caboose's mind.
He eventually meets with Caboose's own mental projection and a prerecorded message left by Delta, which tells him that "memory is the key," and that Washington will understand.
Church exits Caboose's mind only to be discovered by Washington.
Washington discovers Church in his ghost form hovering over Caboose's body.
Church's explanation just leads to bickering between the Reds and Blues.
Ater Washington orders them to stop, Sarge protests that his rank prohibits Washington from ordering them around.
Washington then explains that the outposts in Blood Gulch were simply testing grounds for advanced equipment, and that Freelancers are the only real soldiers.
As Sarge and the rest of the Reds proceed to check the vehicles, Church delivers Delta's message to Washington, who reveals that they need to awaken the Alpha AI, as it contains the information on how the copied AI's were made and their weaknesses, which leads him deciding they must go to Command.
Washington and the Reds and Blues head back to Valhalla.
When the Reds, attempting to steal Warthogs, are pursued by an enemy Warthog, Washington leaves to rescue the Reds.
Meanwhile, Church ignores Washington's previous orders and leaves Caboose and his body in the middle of the canyon to take a look at Tex's body.
Taking over a guard's body, Church walks into the base calmly.
Meanwhile, the Reds manage to destroy the enemy Warthog, only to be berated by Washington, who wanted them to capture it.
A Hornet then rises behind him and starts attacking him and the Reds.
Washington escapes the Hornet and notices the Church-possessed guard heading inside the base where Tex's body is and queries Caboose over the radio about the now frozen-in-place Church.
Caboose blatantly lies to Washington in an attempt to hide the truth from him.
A skeptical Washington asks Caboose to put Church on, when suddenly an explosion causes Church's body to fall over and Caboose quickly hangs up.
As the Reds are busy with an attacking Hornet, Washington goes to Blue base, knocking out another guard before he can shoot Church.
Church dispossesses the guard, who then faints, and then he explains that Tex is like him.
Washington reminds him that they've all lost people, and then berates him for slowing his mission down.
Going back outside, Washington handily takes down the Hornet.
The Reds however wish to back out of their mission to infiltrate Project Freelancer, so Washington trades them a favor to get them to join the mission, demoting Grif.
Caboose (surprisingly) then comes up with a plan to infiltrate the Project Freelancer Operational Command Center: Washington and Church will drive into the facility in a Warthog while the Reds and Caboose hide inside of a tank and go in behind them.
As they do, they are unaware that the Meta is hanging on to the back of the tank.
With Church pretending to be a prisoner, Washington breaks into the AI storage facility to search for the Alpha while the Reds and Caboose remain in the upper base.
While searching the AI vault, Washington tells Church that he's found what they were searching for, which Church believes is the Alpha.
As Church approaches Washington to help, a flash of several images appear in his head, stunning him momentarily.
Washington's target was actually the remains of his old AI, Epsilon.
As boredom begins to set in for the Reds, Sarge and Simmons suspect that since they're inside Command, they can access all data relating to the Red and Blue soldiers.
This is when Sarge comes up with the idea to "erase the Blues." Meanwhile, in the AI vault, Washington explains everything to Church.
During the Great War, the human race was in danger of losing, and Project Freelancer was one of many projects created with the intention of winning the conflict.
They were only given the Alpha AI, and as Simmons stated in Chapter 14, an AI cannot be copied.
The Director decided to subject it to different stressful scenarios, causing it to fragment in order to survive, and each fragment was harvested into the several different AI's given to the Freelancers.
The fragments represented a personality of the Alpha, as Delta represents Alpha's logic, Omega represents its rage, Sigma represents its creativity, and Gamma represents its deceit.
Alpha was unable to keep its memories intact, which is what led to Epsilon's creation, representing Alpha's memories.
After being implanted with it, Washington knew what was done to Alpha through flashes from Epsilon, but never told his superiors.
It is also the reason why he would not allow another AI in his system, in case it discovered the secret.
Washington concludes by explaining that, after an attempt was made to steal Alpha, it was moved to another location.
This explains why Church was stationed in Blood Gulch (a place nobody would think to go to), why he was transferred to a different base by himself for 14 months, why he agreed with everything Delta said, why he felt nothing when Omega infected him, and why he can move from body to body.
It is because Church IS the Alpha AI.
Simmons works on deleting the Blues from Command's database, but is annoyed by a blinking light.
Grif goes to turn it off, but winds up receiving an incoming distress call from Tucker.
At first Grif doesn't know who it is, until Tucker utters his catchphrase, "Bow Chicka Bow Wow".
Tucker claims to have found something "under the sand," right before explosions are heard, forcing him to end the transmission.
Church has trouble accepting the fact that he is an AI, telling Washington that he is 'fucking crazy', and would much rather believe that he is a ghost.
Washington tells Church that he needs him to defeat the Meta.
Church suggests that he get help from Tex since she is like him, but Washington is unwilling to trust her.
Also, the Director and Counselor worked with her very closely, giving her so much special treatment that she was considered their favorite.
An alarm goes off in the facility, forcing Washington and Church to leave the AI vault with Epsilon.
Caboose notices several soldiers approaching them from outside but Grif closes the shutters to keep them out.
Simmons hesitates when preparing to delete the information on the Blues, citing the purpose of the Red vs.
Blue conflict, but Sarge does it anyway.
Washington and Church manage to outrun the guards and regroup with the Reds and Caboose, but Recovery agents have them pinned in the bunker.
Upon learning that the computers house all of Command's records, Church decides to use it to check if he really is an AI, but is dismayed when Simmons points out Sarge had deleted all the information on all the Blue teams.
Outside, the Meta attacks the Recovery agents.
Washington, having planned on the Meta's appearance, uses it as a distraction to get to the motor pool.
There, he attempts to send the Reds and Caboose away with Epsilon so it can be returned to the authorities, while he and Church remain behind to activate an EMP failsafe that Project Freelancer has to eliminate the remaining AIs and equipment in the vicinity, knowing the Meta would endeavor to recover all the AIs in the vault.
Church, however, refuses, and gets into Caboose's jeep with the intention of leaving, as he is apathetic to Project Freelancer and its exploits.
Washington gives him a choice: to leave now, or to stay and find out the truth.
The Reds and Blues attempt to flee the base in their vehicles while Washington attempts to finish Project Freelancer by activating an EMP inside the base.
The Meta follows him inside the facility as he predicted.
Washington heads towards the terminal allowing him access to the failsafe and suddenly the Counselor and the Director speak and attempt to stop him.
The Meta arrives and it is revealed that the Meta is Agent Maine, who is attempting to gain the trust of Project Freelancer so he can meet the Alpha AI, a promise made by the Director.
The Meta shoots Washington as per his orders.
Meanwhile, Caboose loses the immobile body of Church as they escape from the base and has to leave him behind due to the imminent EMP which threatens Epsilon.
Washington, answering Maine's question of where the Alpha is, reveals Church in the form as the Alpha AI, who jumps inside the Meta's head, still maintaining that the EMP will not kill him because he believes he is a ghost.
This allows Washington to activate the EMP, destroying all AIs and other equipment, including Church, throughout the base.
The Reds' Warthog is disabled by the pulse, however Caboose manages to escape and save Epsilon from the EMP wave by driving his vehicle off a cliff.
Shortly after back in Valhalla, the Reds discuss their new base given to them as a reward for their services to the UNSC and it is revealed that Caboose has moved into the adjacent one and attempts to bring Epsilon back online.
In the memo, the Chairman informs the Director that the Oversight Subcommittee have dispatched officers to place him under arrest, and states that when the UNSC rewrites morality protocols for dealing with A.I.s, they'll rename entire sections in the doctrine after the Director, securing his name in history.
Medical Officer DuFresne arrives in Valhalla in response to Simmons' request to Command for a medic.
Doc is initially happy to see Simmons again, but Simmons insists that Donut needs his help.
Doc notes that Donut is dead, and that nothing can be done for him.
Simmons apologizes, and admits that he sent the request because "they" forced him to, as they needed someone with medical training.
Doc turns around to see Washington and The Meta, who knocks him unconscious.
Doc informs Washington that the Meta is physically healthy, though he is having serious problems with his armor.
In the desert, Tucker searches for the Reds and Epsilon-Church, and guesses they must have taken off.
Caboose warns Tucker not to say anything about Epsilon-Church's absence, as the aliens would become hostile if they knew he was gone.
Meanwhile, Sarge arrives in Valhalla, calling out for Simmons in an attempt to lure Washington into the center of the canyon.
Washington tells the Meta to kill the prisoners if Sarge causes him any problems and moves out to intercept him.
With Washington gone and the Meta distracted, Simmons and Doc plan to short circuit the Meta's armor using an overpowered charge on Doc's medical scanner.
Washington confronts Sarge and disarms him, then orders him towards Blue Base, but at Sarge's signal, Grif bursts through the canyon wall in the Warthog, landing on Washington.
With the Warthog still moving at high speed, Washington climbs from under the Warthog onto the front, and attempts to shoot Grif.
Grif slams on the brakes and Washington is thrown into a pile of explosive barrels as Sarge reclaims his shotgun.
He fires at the barrels to ignite them, attempting (and failing) a one-liner, and Washington is engulfed in the resulting explosion.
The Meta notices the explosion and prepares to kill Doc just as he starts to charge his scanner.
Doc hits the Meta with a blast from his overloaded scanner, knocking him back temporarily.
The Meta attempts to punch Doc, but the blast causes his temporal distortion unit to malfunction, slowing him down drastically.
Simmons quickly theorizes that his punch will still carry the same force as normal as they are merely viewing the Meta from a different timeframe, but Doc ignores him.
When the Meta's fist connects with Doc's helmet, he is slammed into the base wall.
Simmons attempts to pull him free, but is forced to abandon him when the Meta recovers.
Simmons is then blasted away from the base by the Meta's weapon and manages to grab onto the Warthog turret when Sarge and Grif drive by.
As the trio tries to escape, the Meta uses the grav-lift to launch himself onto the hood of the jeep, destroying it and throwing the Reds out.
As the Reds prepare to fight, Epsilon-Church arrives and catches the interest of the Meta.
He lures the Meta back towards Blue base, briefly pausing when he recognizes it from his memory flash.
The Reds take the opportunity to flee through the hole in the wall, which leads to another canyon.
Having set the piece of wall containing Doc back up vertically, Washington again attempts to interrogate him.
After being repeatedly hit by the Meta and threatened to be shot, Doc reveals that Simmons said something about a distress call, and mentioned "sand".
At the desert, the Reds spy on Epsilon-Church and Caboose.
Sarge believes that the Reds may be able to restore the Blues to command's database at the facility mentioned by Epsilon Church.
As the Reds leave in pursuit, Tucker takes the opportunity to escape from the aliens and he makes a dash to his alien motorcycle to follow the Reds.
Unfortunately, the vehicle runs out of gas and Tucker is forced to flee on foot with the aliens in pursuit.
Upon entering the facility, Epsilon-Church has F.I.L.S.S.
run the tutorial for Caboose's benefit.
As they explore the facility, F.I.L.S.S.
explains that it is a backup storage site, intended to allow the operations of Project Freelancer to continue if its primary site was lost.
She further explains that the bunker stores equipment used in the combat simulations, noting that her record of Blue team is missing.
When they arrive at a locked door, F.I.L.S.S.
refuses to allow Caboose to enter, claiming that only the Director is allowed in.
At Epsilon-Church's insistence, she relents and allows both to enter.
Outside, Grif and Sarge catch up with Simmons, who had seen Epsilon-Church and Caboose entering the facility.
The three make plans to gain entry by posing as Freelancer agents.
In the desert, Washington and the Meta free Doc from the concrete block he was trapped in using grenades and the Meta's weapon.
Doc tells the ex-Freelancers that the aliens are drawing a map to where Epsilon went to, though his translation may be incorrect.
The aliens finish drawing the map, but it turns out to be a picture of a dead human with the word "Shisno" next to it.
Rather than waste any more time, Washington decides to simply kill the aliens and leave one alive to talk, resulting in the Meta leading an attack.
As the Reds make a hasty retreat, Caboose asks F.I.L.S.S.
for help, who declines, stating that she cannot interrupt a simulation test.
Tex ambushes the Reds and starts to attack them while Simmons flees to find a better weapon.
After finding a rocket launcher, he runs into Tucker, who he asks to help fight Tex.
Tex begins beating Epsilon-Church with his previous shell as the Reds stand by and discuss the situation.
Caboose asks F.I.L.S.S.
for help again; she suggests th
Alexis Martínez (died December 24, 2009) was an orca trainer at Loro Parque’s Orca Ocean in the Canary Islands, who was killed by a SeaWorld-owned orca, Keto.[1][2] Loro Parque (Spanish for "parrot park") is a zoo located on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife.
The park has the world's largest indoor penguin exhibition and the longest shark tunnel in Europe and is one of only two parks in Europe to house killer whales.[3] In 2004 and 2005, before the first four orcas were brought to Loro Parque, eight animal trainers from the park were sent to SeaWorld parks in Texas and Florida for training.
Four SeaWorld orcas were delivered by wide-body cargo plane in February 2006, and various SeaWorld staff occasionally traveled to Loro Parque.[1] Regular contact was maintained at several levels, such as remote monitoring capability via Orca Ocean's video surveillance system.[1] By December 2009, SeaWorld had leased four killer whales to Loro Parque.[2] Alexis Martinez, age 29, had worked at Loro Parque since 2004.
He was killed during a Christmas show rehearsal when he was attacked by one of the orcas, Keto.
Keto pulled Alexis under water and then rammed him in his chest.
He died of massive internal bleeding and injuries.
[2]:Tr.
408 From this date, the trainers have not entered the water with the orcas during live shows.
The park initially characterized the death as an "accident" and claimed that the body showed no signs of violence, but the subsequent autopsy report stated that Martinez died due to grave injuries sustained by an orca attack, including multiple compression fractures, tears to vital organs, and the bite marks of the animal on his body.[4] According to an Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission Decision and Order in 2012, Keto was not responding to the operant conditioning signals given:[2] On December 24, 2009, exactly two months before Tilikum killed Dawn Brancheau, Loro Parque trainer (Alexis Martínez) was working with Keto, a killer whale owned by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.
During a training session, Keto pulled Alexis under water and then rammed him in his chest.
A.
M.
died of massive internal bleeding (Tr.
408).[2] A SeaWorld employee described the 21 event in an incident report.
After Keto failed to perform a number of behaviors correctly, Alexis and Keto were floating on the surface of the pool: Keto came up with [Alexis.] and appeared calm but did appear to position himself between [Alexis] and the stage.
[Alexis] waited for calmness from Keto and asked for a stage call (underwater tone).
Keto responded and was received at stage by Brian.
.
.
.
Brian instructed [Alexis] to swim out (toward the slideover).
When [Alexis] commenced swimming (sculling) Keto began leaning toward him.
Brian attempted another hand target but Keto left control and engaged [Alexis] by pushing him to the bottom with his rostrum.
Brian observed the intensity of the situation and decided to initiate a hand slap.
Keto did not respond.
Brian tapped the bucket, then hand slapped again.
It appeared Keto responded, came to the surface for a breath.
The alarm was sounded.
Keto immediately after taking a breath returned to [Alexis] and then resurfaced near stage with [Alexis] on his rostrum and with his mouth closed.
(Exh.
C-6, p.
2725).
Keto released A.
M., who sank to the bottom of the pool.
Mr.
Rokeach and the Loro Parque trainers were eventually able to get Keto to enter another pool, where Keto could be isolated while Alexis’ body was recovered.
While the gate was closing Keto began to play with it, keeping it open.
After trainers released a net into the pool, Keto allowed the gate to close.
Mr.
Rokeach entered the stage pool and retrieved Alexis' body from the bottom.[2] SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment temporarily suspended waterwork in all of its parks immediately following Alexis' death, then resumed waterwork shortly afterwards.
Loro Parque ceased (apparently permanently) all waterwork with killer whales (Tr.
563-564).[2]During the local investigation into the death of Alexis Martinez, it came to light that the park had also mischaracterized to the public a 2007 incident with Tekoa, the other male, and claimed it was also an accident rather than an attack.[5] The Canary Islands Ministry of Work and Immigration asserts that water work with orcas is an “inherently risky activity”, the main risk being “precisely in the interaction with an animal that weighs more than three thousand kilos and is also in its natural environment (water)”.
It asserts that the only preventive action is a simple one: “prohibition of the activity.”[1]
The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams.
The tournament was first held in 1987, when the tournament was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.
The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil who, according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game.
Four countries have won the trophy; New Zealand and South Africa three times, Australia twice, and England once.
South Africa are the current champions, having defeated England in the final of the 2019 tournament in Japan.
The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body.
Sixteen teams were invited to participate in the inaugural tournament in 1987, however since 1999 twenty teams have taken part.
Japan hosted the 2019 Rugby World Cup and France will host the next in 2023.
On 21 August 2019, World Rugby announced that gender designations would be removed from the titles of the men's and women's World Cups.
Accordingly, all future World Cups for men and women will officially bear the "Rugby World Cup" name.
The first tournament to be affected by the new policy will be the next women's tournament to be held in New Zealand in 2021, which will officially be titled as "Rugby World Cup 2021".[1] Qualifying tournaments were introduced for the second tournament, where eight of the sixteen places were contested in a twenty-four-nation tournament.[2] The inaugural World Cup in 1987, did not involve any qualifying process; instead, the 16 places were automatically filled by seven eligible International Rugby Football Board (IRFB, now World Rugby) member nations, and the rest by invitation.[3] In 2003 and 2007, the qualifying format allowed for eight of the twenty available positions to be filled by automatic qualification, as the eight quarter-finalists of the previous tournament enter its successor.
The remaining twelve positions were filled by continental qualifying tournaments.[4] Positions were filled by three teams from the Americas, one from Asia, one from Africa, three from Europe and two from Oceania.[4] Another two places were allocated for repechage.
The first repechage place was determined by a match between the runners-up from the Africa and Europe qualifying tournaments, with that winner then playing the Americas runner-up to determine the place.[5] The second repechage position was determined between the runners-up from the Asia and Oceania qualifiers.[5] The current format allows for 12 of the 20 available positions to be filled by automatic qualification, as the teams who finish third or better in the group (pool) stages of the previous tournament enter its successor (where they will be seeded).[6][7] The qualification system for the remaining eight places is region-based, with a total eight teams allocated for Europe, five for Oceania, three for the Americas, two for Africa, and one for Asia.
The last place is determined by an intercontinental play-off.[8] The 2015 tournament involved twenty nations competing over six weeks.[7][9] There were two stages, a pool and a knockout.
Nations were divided into four pools, A through to D, of five nations each.[9][10] The teams were seeded before the start of the tournament, with the seedings taken from the World Rankings in December 2012.
The four highest-ranked teams were drawn into pools A to D.
The next four highest-ranked teams were then drawn into pools A to D, followed by the next four.
The remaining positions in each pool were filled by the qualifiers.[7][11] Nations play four pool games, playing their respective pool members once each.[10] A bonus points system is used during pool play.
If two or more teams are level on points, a system of criteria is used to determine the higher ranked; the sixth and final criterion decides the higher rank through the official World Rankings.[10] The winner and runner-up of each pool enter the knockout stage.
The knockout stage consists of quarter- and semi-finals, and then the final.
The winner of each pool is placed against a runner-up of a different pool in a quarter-final.
The winner of each quarter-final goes on to the semi-finals, and the respective winners proceed to the final.
Losers of the semi-finals contest for third place, called the 'Bronze Final'.
If a match in the knockout stages ends in a draw, the winner is determined through extra time.
If that fails, the match goes into sudden death and the next team to score any points is the winner.
As a last resort, a kicking competition is used.[10] Prior to the Rugby World Cup, there was no truly global rugby union competition, but there were a number of other tournaments.
One of the oldest is the annual Six Nations Championship, which started in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship, a tournament between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
It expanded to the Five Nations in 1910, when France joined the tournament.
France did not participate from 1931 to 1939, during which period it reverted to a Home Nations championship.
In 2000, Italy joined the competition, which became the Six Nations.[12] Rugby union was also played at the Summer Olympic Games, first appearing at the 1900 Paris games and subsequently at London in 1908, Antwerp in 1920, and Paris again in 1924.
France won the first gold medal, then Australasia, with the last two being won by the United States.
However rugby union ceased to be on Olympic program after 1924.[13][14][a] The idea of a Rugby World Cup had been suggested on numerous occasions going back to the 1950s, but met with opposition from most unions in the IRFB.[15] The idea resurfaced several times in the early 1980s, with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU; now known as Rugby Australia) in 1983, and the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU; now known as New Zealand Rugby) in 1984 independently proposing the establishment of a world cup.[16] A proposal was again put to the IRFB in 1985 and this time passed 10–6.
The delegates from Australia, France, New Zealand and South Africa all voted for the proposal, and the delegates from Ireland and Scotland against; the English and Welsh delegates were split, with one from each country for and one against.[15][16] The inaugural tournament, jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, was held in May and June 1987, with sixteen nations taking part.[17] New Zealand became the first-ever champions, defeating France 29–9 in the final.[18] The subsequent 1991 tournament was hosted by England, with matches played throughout Britain, Ireland and France.
This tournament saw the introduction of a qualifying tournament; eight places were allocated to the quarter-finalists from 1987, and the remaining eight decided by a thirty-five nation qualifying tournament.[2] Australia won the second tournament, defeating England 12–6 in the final.[19] In 1992, eight years after their last official series,[b] South Africa hosted New Zealand in a one-off test match.
The resumption of international rugby in South Africa came after the dismantling of the apartheid system, and was only done with permission of the African National Congress.[20][21] With their return to test rugby, South Africa were selected to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup.[22] After upsetting Australia in the opening match, South Africa continued to advance through the tournament until they met New Zealand in the final.[23][24] After a tense final that went into extra time, South Africa emerged 15–12 winners,[25] with then President Nelson Mandela, wearing a Springbok jersey,[24] presenting the trophy to South Africa's captain, Francois Pienaar.[26] The tournament in 1999 was hosted by Wales with matches also being held throughout the rest of the United Kingdom, Ireland and France.
The tournament included a repechage system,[27] alongside specific regional qualifying places,[28] and an increase from sixteen to twenty participating nations.[29] Australia claimed their second title, defeating France in the final.[30] The 2003 event was hosted by Australia, although it was originally intended to be held jointly with New Zealand.
England emerged as champions defeating Australia in extra time.
England's win was unique in that it broke the southern hemisphere's dominance in the event.
Such was the celebration of England's victory that an estimated 750,000 people gathered in central London to greet the team, making the day the largest sporting celebration of its kind ever in the United Kingdom.[31] The 2007 competition was hosted by France, with matches also being held in Wales and Scotland.
South Africa claimed their second title by defeating defending champions England 15–6.
The 2011 tournament was awarded to New Zealand in November 2005, ahead of bids from Japan and South Africa.
The All Blacks reclaimed their place atop the rugby world with a narrow 8–7 win over France in the 2011 final.
In the 2015 edition of tournament, hosted by England, New Zealand once again won the final, this time against established rivals, Australia.
In doing so, they became the first team in World Cup history to win three titles, as well as the first to successfully defend a title.
It was also New Zealand's first title victory on foreign soil.
The 2019 World Cup, hosted by Japan, saw South Africa claim their third trophy to match New Zealand for the most Rugby World Cup titles.
South Africa defeated England 32–12 in the final.
The Webb Ellis Cup is the prize presented to winners of the Rugby World Cup, named after William Webb Ellis.
The trophy is also referred to simply as the Rugby World Cup.
The trophy was chosen in 1987 as an appropriate cup for use in the competition, and was created in 1906 by Garrard's Crown Jewellers.[32][33] The trophy is restored after each game by fellow Royal Warrant holder Thomas Lyte.[34][35] The words 'The International Rugby Football Board' and 'The Webb Ellis Cup' are engraved on the face of the cup.
It stands thirty-eight centimetres high and is silver gilded in gold, and supported by two cast scroll handles, one with the head of a satyr, and the other a head of a nymph.[36] In Australia the trophy is colloquially known as "Bill" — a reference to William Webb Ellis.
Tournaments are organised by Rugby World Cup Ltd (RWCL), which is itself owned by World Rugby.
The selection of host is decided by a vote of World Rugby Council members.[37][38] The voting procedure is managed by a team of independent auditors, and the voting kept secret.
The allocation of a tournament to a host nation is now made five or six years prior to the commencement of the event, for example New Zealand were awarded the 2011 event in late 2005.
The tournament has been hosted by multiple nations.
For example, the 1987 tournament was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
World Rugby requires that the hosts must have a venue with a capacity of at least 60,000 spectators for the final.[39] Host nations sometimes construct or upgrade stadia in preparation for the World Cup, such as Millennium Stadium – purpose built for the 1999 tournament – and Eden Park, upgraded for 2011.[39][40] The first country outside of the traditional rugby nations of SANZAAR or the Six Nations to be awarded the hosting rights was 2019 host Japan.
France will host the 2023 tournament.
Organizers of the Rugby World Cup, as well as the Global Sports Impact, state that the Rugby World Cup is the third largest sporting event in the world, behind only the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics,[41][42] although other sources question whether this is accurate.[43] Reports emanating from World Rugby and its business partners have frequently touted the tournament's media growth, with cumulative worldwide television audiences of 300 million for the inaugural 1987 tournament, 1.75 billion in 1991, 2.67 billion in 1995, 3 billion in 1999,[44] 3.5 billion in 2003,[45] and 4 billion in 2007.[46] The 4 billion figure was widely dismissed as the global audience for television is estimated to be about 4.2 billion.[47] However, independent reviews have called into question the methodology of those growth estimates, pointing to factual inconsistencies.[48] The event's supposed drawing power outside of a handful of rugby strongholds was also downplayed significantly, with an estimated 97 percent of the 33 million average audience produced by the 2007 final coming from Australasia, South Africa, the British Isles and France.[49] Other sports have been accused of exaggerating their television reach over the years; such claims are not exclusive to the Rugby World Cup.
While the event's global popularity remains a matter of dispute, high interest in traditional rugby nations is well documented.
The 2003 final, between Australia and England, became the most watched rugby union match in the history of Australian television.[50] †Typhoon Hagibis caused 3 group stage matches to be cancelled.
As a result, only 45 of the scheduled 48 matches were played in the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Notes: Twenty-five nations have participated at the Rugby World Cup (excluding qualifying tournaments).
The only nations to host and win a tournament are New Zealand (1987 and 2011) and South Africa (1995).
The performance of other host nations includes England (1991 final hosts) and Australia (2003 hosts) both finishing runners-up, while France (2007 hosts) finished fourth, and Wales (1999 hosts) and Japan (2019 hosts) reached the quarter-finals.
Wales became the first host nation to be eliminated at the pool stages in 1991 while England became the first solo host nation to be eliminated at the pool stages in 2015.
Of the twenty-five nations that have participated in at least one tournament, eleven of them have never missed a tournament.[c] 1 South Africa was excluded from the first two tournaments due to a sporting boycott during the apartheid era.
The record for most points overall is held by English player Jonny Wilkinson, who scored 277 during his World Cup career.[52] New Zealand All Black Grant Fox holds the record for most points in one competition, with 126 in 1987;[52] Jason Leonard of England holds the record for most World Cup matches: 22 between 1991 and 2003.[52] All Black Simon Culhane holds the record for most points in a match by one player, 45, as well as the record for most conversions in a match, 20.[53] All Black Marc Ellis holds the record for most tries in a match, six, which he scored against Japan in 1995.[54] New Zealand All Black Jonah Lomu is the youngest player to appear in a final – aged 20 years and 43 days at the 1995 Final.[55] Lomu (playing in two tournaments) and South African Bryan Habana (playing in three tournaments) share the record for most total World Cup tournament tries, both scoring 15.[54] Lomu (in 1999) and Habana (in 2007) also share the record, along with All Black Julian Savea (in 2015), for most tries in a tournament, with 8 each.[54] South Africa's Jannie de Beer kicked five drop-goals against England in 1999 – an individual record for a single World Cup match.[55] The record for most penalties in a match is 8, held by Australian Matt Burke, Argentinian Gonzalo Quesada, Scotland's Gavin Hastings and France's Thierry Lacroix,[53] with Quesada also holding the record for most penalties in a tournament, with 31.
The most points scored in a game is 145, by the All Blacks against Japan in 1995, while the widest winning margin is 142, held by Australia in a match against Namibia in 2003.[56] A total of 16 players have been sent off (red carded) in the tournament.

"Fantasy" is a song recorded by French singer-songwriter DyE for his debut studio album, Taki 183 (2011).
It was released as the record's second and final single on 10 January 2011.
The recording was written and produced by DyE himself, while Guillaume Teyssier served as an additional lyricist.
Since its initial release, the song has been well known due to its accompanying music video, which was highly intended to shock its viewers.
The viral clip features four teenagers sneaking off into a pool house at night before taking part in sexual activities, which transforms two of the friends into alien-like monsters.
"Fantasy" was written and produced by DyE himself, while Guillaume Teyssier served as an additional lyricist.[1] Despite its music video's graphic nature, João Pedro Mechelli from A Gambiarra claimed that the lyrics represented the entire opposite of that and were open for other interpretations.[2] An animated accompanying music video for "Fantasy" was released sometime in 2011.
The visual was designed and created by Jérémie Périn and has often been known for its graphic content.
According to Ian Gassman from Paste, its "very buzzy twist ending makes it pretty hard not to click".[3] Gassman additionally listed it at number four on his list of "10 More of the Best Animated Music Videos" for the same publication.[3] The video begins with four teenagers sneaking into a local pool at night.
Two of the teenagers, a boy and a girl, jump into the pool and swim together, leading to the beginning of sexual encounter between the two of them, while the remaining boy and girl sit by the poolside and watch them.
The boy on the poolside tries to make advances on the girl, attempting to kiss her, but rather than reciprocating, she becomes flustered and jumps into the pool with her clothes still on.
While underwater, she notices a spasming sensation in her genitals, causing her to panic and resurface in pain.
Once she climbs out of the pool, she and the boy discover that their friends have been possessed by worm-like aliens, who attack and kill the boy.
The girl manages to escape by jumping back into the pool.
She enters another dimension through a portal at the bottom of the pool, whereupon she finds herself facing a giant Lovecraftian creature in the distance.
Her eyes subsequently explode out of her skull, killing her.
Steven Michael Burns (born October 9, 1973) is an American actor, television host, guitarist, musician, and singer.
He is well known as the original host of the long-running children's preschool television program Blue's Clues from 1996 to 2002, for which he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2001.
Burns was born in Boyertown, Pennsylvania.
He attended Boyertown Area Senior High School in Berks County, graduating in 1992.[1] Burns played in bands called Sudden Impact US, Nine Pound Truck, and the Ivys (which he has called a "Morrissey rip-off band") while in high school and college.[2] He studied theatre under an acting scholarship at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley, where he was discovered by an agent.[3] He dropped out of school and moved to New York City to then become a professional actor.[4] He lived in a basement apartment near Times Square, finding his first success as a voice-over artist for ads and making appearances on Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order.[3] He lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.[5] In 1995, Burns auditioned for Blue's Clues, thinking it was another voice-over role.[4] He had long hair and an earring.
"I was a bit of a skate rat," he said.[3] Initially, the Nickelodeon executives were not supportive of Burns hosting their new show; in subsequent auditions, the show's creators requested that he dress more conservatively.
(Burns reported that the creators, in a call-back phone conversation, asked him, "Could you not look like yourself tomorrow morning?")[6] It became apparent, however, that he was the favorite with preschool test audiences.
Executive producer and co-creator Traci Paige Johnson reported that of the 100 people they auditioned, Burns was "the realest."[4] As Dr.
Alice Wilder, Nickelodeon's Director of Research and Development, said: "[T]here was just something about this kid, who was fresh out of Pennsylvania, who just knew where to look in the camera to really talk to kids.
He was just right."[6] Blue's Clues was an instant hit due to Burns's performances as much as the show's format.
He became "a superstar" among his audience and their parents, but unknown to everyone else,[4] and enjoyed what he called being a "micro-celebrity, about as small a celebrity as you can be."[3] As the New York Times reported, he "developed an avid following among both preteen girls and mothers.
The former send torrents of e-mail; the latter scrutinize the show with an intensity that might make even Elmo, the red Muppet, blush."[3] In 2000, People magazine included Burns in their annual list of America's most eligible bachelors.[7] According to writer Diane Tracy, Burns was "destined for the part."[8] Also, according to Tracy, Burns was not the typical children's television host: "There is nothing syrupy about him—his humor is sometimes borderline offbeat, but never inappropriate for preschoolers."[8] Burns became "very involved" with the production of Blue's Clues from the beginning.[7] One of the most challenging aspects of hosting the show was performing on the "blue screen" before the animation was added.[9] Burns called it "maddening"[7] and likened it to "acting at the bottom of a swimming pool."[10] After nearly six years and 100 episodes,[11] Burns announced that he would be departing Blue's Clues in 2002.[6] According to Johnson, Burns never wanted to become a "children's host." He loved kids, but stated, "he could not make a life-long career out of it."[4] Burns went on by saying, "I knew I wasn't going to be doing children's television all my life, mostly because I refused to lose my hair on a kid's TV show, and it was happening, fast."[6] The day following the filming of his final episode for the show, he shaved his head — something that he wanted to do for many years, but the show's producers would not allow it.[12] On the FAQ section of his webpage, when asked why he shaved his head, and if he had been trying to make a statement, Burns replied, "Yes, the statement is, 'We have male pattern baldness.'"[11] Burns's departure caused a resurface of the rumors that had circulated about him since 1998.
Burns replied, "The rumor mill surrounding me has always been really strange."[6] Some of these "specious claims" included: death from a heroin overdose, being killed in a car accident, and, like what was rumored to have happened to Paul McCartney in 1966, him having been replaced with a look-alike.
After Burns' departure, the Blue's Clues actor was then replaced by Donovan Patton as Steve's younger brother "Joe".[13] Burns made an appearance on The Rosie O'Donnell Show to dispute these rumors,[6] and he and co-creator Angela Santomero appeared on The Today Show to help concerned parents extinguish the fears of kids who may have heard these rumors.[13] In an interview with The Huffington Post in 2016, Burns addresses the rumors about his departure: "People think I left the show to pursue a music career.
That didn't happen at all.
I left the show because it was just simply time to go.
I was pretty much playing a boyish, older-brotherish kind of character on the show.
I was getting older; I was losing my hair; a lot of the original people on the show, like the people who created it, were all moving on to other careers.
It just felt like time.
I just had a gut feeling like it was time to go."[14] Burns consulted on the casting process for the revival of Blue's Clues, titled Blue's Clues & You!, and helped pick the new host, Joshua Dela Cruz.[15] He and Patton also reprise their roles in the premiere episode to help welcome in "Josh," their cousin.[16] Burns worked on material for his first album, Songs for Dustmites, for two and a half years at a small studio in his home in Brooklyn before it was produced by PIAS Records in late 2002.
He started work on the album after he left Blue's Clues in 2002, and it was released in 2003.[4] He posted eleven songs on his webpage and then realizing he needed help with drums and arrangements went to Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips for advice.
Drozd assisted Burns with six tracks, Lips bassist Michael Ivins engineered the album, and longtime Lips producer David Fridmann produced it.
One of the songs from the album, "Mighty Little Man," is used as the opening theme for the CBS series Young Sheldon.[17] Burns started a band, Steve Burns and the Struggle, and completed his second album, Deep Sea Recovery Efforts, which was released in 2009.
Members of the Struggle include Drozd and Ryan Smith of A Million Billion.
Burns acted in the 2007 horror-comedy film Netherbeast Incorporated with Darrell Hammond and Dave Foley, playing the part of a vampire.[18] In 2008, he played an astronaut in Christmas on Mars, a science fiction film from The Flaming Lips.[12] In March 2012, he appeared in the YouTube comedy series The Professionals.[19] In late 2016, Burns released a children's album with Drozd, titled Foreverywhere.
They released a video of the album's first song, "The Unicorn and Princess Rainbow".[14] Burns made a guest appearance on Tim Kubart's 2018 children's album Building Blocks.[20]
Killer whales (or orcas) are powerful predators capable of killing leopard seals and great white sharks.
They have also been recorded preying on usually terrestrial species such as moose swimming between islands.[1] In the wild, there have been no fatal attacks on humans.[2][3] In captivity, there have been several non-fatal and fatal attacks on humans since the 1970s.[4] Experts are divided as to whether the injuries and deaths were accidental or deliberate attempts to cause harm.
However, it is suggested that the orca attacks are so often in captivity because the whales relied on the trainers as care takers while in the wild they avoid humans around them.
[5][6] There are a few recorded cases of wild orcas threatening humans.
However, there have been no fatalities.[2][7] There have been attacks on humans by captive killer whales, some fatal.
While Tilikum has perhaps the most infamous reputation of all captive orcas, there have been several other orcas that have harmed people whether intentionally or unintentionally on more than one occasion.[75]
Murdoch Mysteries is a Canadian mystery drama television series that began in 2008.
The series is based on the Detective Murdoch novels by Maureen Jennings and is set in Toronto around the turn of the 20th century.
It centres on William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a detective at Station House Four, who solves crimes using scientific techniques and inventions which are highly advanced for the time (e.g.
fingerprinting).
He is assisted by Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris), city coroner Doctor Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy), and Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig).
The show was developed for television by R.B.
Carney, Cal Coons, and Alexandra Zarowny, and is produced by Shaftesbury Films.
The series was preceded by three television movies, which aired on Bravo! from 2004 to 2005.
These featured a different cast: Peter Outerbridge as Murdoch, Keeley Hawes as Doctor Ogden, Matthew MacFadzean as Constable Crabtree, and Colm Meaney as Inspector Brackenreid.[1] Murdoch Mysteries aired on Citytv for five seasons before being cancelled.[2] It was then picked up by CBC, where it has aired since season six.[3] The show airs in the UK on Alibi, and is co-produced by Alibi's parent company, UKTV.
It has also aired in the United States on Ovation under the title The Artful Detective, but as of season twelve, has reverted to the original title.
As of March 18, 2020,[update] 204 episodes of Murdoch Mysteries have aired, including three specials, concluding the thirteenth season.
In July 2007 Shaftesbury Films announced that filming had begun on a 13 episode series based on both Maureen Jennings' novels and the Murdoch Mysteries TV movies, which would air on Bravo! in 2008.[4] However, subsequent changes in Canadian media ownership resulted in Bravo! being owned by CTVglobemedia, whereas Murdoch Mysteries was acquired by Rogers Communications, who decided to air it on their recently acquired CityTV network.
Filming of the first season of Murdoch Mysteries occurred between June 11 and October 17, 2007, primarily in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario.[4] Recurring cast members include Tamara Hope as Edna Garrison, Dmitry Chepovetsky as Nikola Tesla, Lachlan Murdoch as Constable Henry Higgins, Arwen Humphreys as Margaret Brackenreid, Allan Royal as Chief Constable Stockton, Geraint Wyn Davies as Arthur Conan Doyle, Maria del Mar as Sarah Pensell, Stephen McHattie as Harry Murdoch, and Peter Keleghan as Terrence Meyers.

Murdoch Mysteries was renewed for a third season by CityTV in June 2009.[8] As part of the show's production deal, all episodes premiered in the UK on the Alibi network before premiering in Canada; this arrangement continued until the end of season five.[9] The first episode of season three was partially filmed in Bristol, England.[9] Additional filming took place around Ontario, at Ball's Falls[10] and the Glanmore National Historic Site.[11] Recurring cast members include Lachlan Murdoch as Henry Higgins, Lisa Faulkner as Anna Fulford, Allan Royal as Chief Constable Stockton, Richard Clarkin as Inspector Davis, Arwen Humphreys as Margaret Brackenreid, Paul Amos as Doctor Roberts, Peter Stebbings as James Pendrick, Kate Greenhouse as Sally Pendrick, Sarah Gadon as Ruby Ogden, Dmitry Chepovetsky as Nikola Tesla, and Peter Keleghan as Terrence Meyers.

Filming of season six took place between May 22 and September 28, 2012.[17] Scenes from "The Ghost of Queen's Park" were filmed on location on July 13, 2012.[18] David Onley, the current Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, had a cameo in season six in which he portrayed the eighth Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Sir Oliver Mowat.[19] Thomas Howes made a guest appearance as Winston Churchill, who asked Murdoch's help when he was accused of murder.[20] Georgina Reilly (Dr.
Emily Grace) was promoted to series regular for the sixth season.[21] On April 2, 2013, CBC renewed Murdoch Mysteries for a seventh season, to consist of an extended order of 18 episodes instead of the usual 13.
The seventh season had its premiere on September 30, 2013.[35] On April 4, 2014, CBC renewed Murdoch Mysteries for an eighth season.[54] On March 4, 2015, it was announced that CBC had renewed Murdoch Mysteries for a ninth season.[70] On May 25, 2015, it was announced that William Shatner would be guest starring as author Mark Twain.[71] Season 9 will see guest appearances of Lucy Maud Montgomery, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier and Mouna Traoré as Rebecca James, a young protegee whom Julia takes under her wing.[72] On March 31, 2016, CBC announced the tenth season of Murdoch Mysteries, ten days after the ninth-season finale.[91] On March 13, 2017, CBC renewed the show for an eleventh season consisting of 18 episodes and a third two-hour Christmas special.[111][112] This season saw the return of Alexander Graham Bell and Theodore Roosevelt.
Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan and Dr.
William Osler made guest appearances as well.[113] Dylan Neal reprised his role as Jasper Linney, Murdoch's half brother, during the Christmas special, last seen in the season two finale.
Mouna Traoré, who played Rebecca James, left the show in episode two, with a guest appearance in episode seventeen.
Shanice Banton joined the cast in episode four, in a recurring role, as Violet Hart, a medical student and Julia's new morgue assistant.[114] Unlike seasons nine through eleven, the twelfth season of Murdoch Mysteries did not include a Christmas movie, opting instead for an "out of the box" Halloween episode.[115] Former Canadian Olympic figure skater Elvis Stojko guest starred in episode 13 as ex-con Sam Marshal, who Murdoch suspects of murder.
The episode also saw the return of, Dmitry Chepovetsky as Nikola Tesla, whose last appearance was nine years ago in season 3, episode 13.[116] Colin Mochrie reprises his role from last season as Ralph Fellows and Patrick McKenna returned as Inspector Hamish Slorach, last seen in season eight.[117] The season averaged 1.1 million viewers in Canada on CBC from September 24, 2018 to March 4, 2019.[118] On March 25, 2019, CBC renewed the show for a thirteenth season of eighteen episodes.[119] This season, Murdoch Mysteries celebrated its 200th episode, with Lisa Norton, John Tench, Dmitry Chepovetsky, David Storch and Peter Stebbings, reprising their roles as Emma Goldman, Alexander Graham Bell, Nicholas Telsa, Thomas Edison and James Pendrick respectively.[120] Colm Feore made a guest appearance this season as George's long lost father, George Crabtree Sr., that was directed by Yannick Bisson.[121]

Cabinet resurfacing is a great way to update the look of your kitchen, but you might be wondering if this is something you can handle yourself.
Before trying to tackle this project, learn about the different types of resurfacing.
Cabinet resurfacing is a popular way to completely change the look of your kitchen or bathroom, without spending a lot of money.
If you're tempted to have this done, you might be wondering if this is something you can tackle yourself.
Before you can decide if this is something you want to do yourself, however, you'll need to learn about the different types of cabinet resurfacing.Cabinet Refacing Vs Cabinet RefinishingResurfacing is a general term that covers two different methods of cupboard remodeling.
Whether you're doing this yourself or hiring a company that does this professionally, you'll need to know which method to use.If you're going to use refacing to update your kitchen, you'll first need to remove the doors and drawers and measure those openings.
New doors and drawers are then ordered.
This step can take a couple of weeks, depending on the style and sizes you need.
A veneer is then applied to the existing structure that matches the new doors and drawers.
There are a number of different types of veneers, from a peel and stick veneer to one that's applied with heat.If refinishing is a better option for you, the doors and drawers will be removed, but saved for reuse.
Everything is sanded down and then a new coat of paint or a new stain color is applied.Thinking Of Doing It Yourself?Cabinet refinishing can be a simple enough project for a handy homeowner.
You'll likely want to use a power sander (sanding by hand could take days, depending on the size of your kitchen), but take care that you're sanding very carefully, especially if your existing doors are on the thinner side or have grooves or ridges.
Once everything is sanded, you'll need to either paint or sand the structures.
Painting is easier than using stain since you don't have to worry too much about applying it unevenly, but take care to make sure you're using the right type of paint.
Realize that this project can be time consuming since you may need to apply more than one coat of paint or stain and that you'll need to account for drying time before reattaching everything.Cabinet refacing, on the other hand, can be a little more complicated.
You'll need to make sure you've measured correctly and cut the veneer so that it fits exactly right on the existing structure.
Make sure you measuring precisely so you don't have to cut the veneer after it's applied to the cupboard structure.Hiring A ProfessionalThis is probably the easiest way to get a new look in your kitchen, although it can be slightly more expensive than doing it yourself.
However, by hiring a company to take care of this, you'll be sure that you're getting a professional end product.
Resurfacing is more difficult than simply painting a room or other minor home improvement projects, so if you're not 100% confident that you can do this yourself, it's a good idea to look into hiring a company that handles this type of project every day.Cabinet refacing or refinishing can be an excellent way to update the look of your kitchen or bathroom.
It's significantly cheaper than replacing the cupboards entirely, even if you do choose to hire a company to take care of the project for you.

Leaf nets are placed on top of traditional or solar covers to collect leaves, sticks and other debris in the autumn.
Every family should own a safety cover for the backyard pool to ensure the safety of visitors and guests.
A safety cover is a heavy-duty cover that anchors to the edges of the pool, protecting accident-prone guests from falling into the deep end of the pool. After the pool cover is removed in the morning, pool owners have to ensure that the water has been purified before the first cannonballs and dives.
A pool owner should have an automatic cleaner and a chlorine generator in his pool equipment supplies to keep water clean at all times.
An automatic cleaner will sweep the bottom of the pool and remove debris that may have gotten under the cover.
Instead of trying to find the right balance between chlorine and water, a chlorine generator can be used to dole out small amounts of chlorine to avoid burnt eyes and skin discomfort.Your pool is not complete without a set of stairs to allow easy entrance into the water.
Budget-conscious families may opt for plastic ladders and above-ground stairs that can be stored in the garage when the pool isn't in use.
Other pool owners will opt for in-pool stairs and decks that span above the water to make access easier for their guests.
Pool equipment suppliers will have all of these stairs in stock because many families opt for multiple entry options.

Has anyone used the company Miracle Method to resurface a bathtub? I have some fiberglass tub surrounds that are showing some wear.
I thought resurfacing may increase the longevity and appearance.
What are your thoughts/experiences with this process?
Which is better quality at holding up long-term - rostoleum or gianni?
Just curious how many have opted to resurface old tubs rather than replacing them.
If you have, were you pleased with the results? Did they hold up in rentals?I refinished a few tubs in the eighties will good result, but have no idea how long they held up.
A friend had purchased a specialty franchise.
Back then, the products available required a mechanical bond.
It was quite labor intensive to scuff the surface adequately to create enough "teeth" to ensure a good bond.
From what I understand, todays products provide a chemical bond so prep is limited to a thorough cleaning.
I wouldnt recommend the DIY kits as I'd want the warranty offered by the specialty guys.Ive run into numerous scenerios where the tile surround was done fairly recently and in excellent shape, and the fixture had been replaced at that time as well, so there was no ready excuse to rip out tub and replace.
In these instances I gave the homeowner and investor the options and each one chose replacement.
The last quote I received for resurfacing a tub was $375 and they are in and out in hours.
Under certain circumstances, it may be a good option and be a time and money saver.Whatchyathinkaboudit?
We were hoping to avoid resurfacing the tub in a current project, but I doubt the Magic Erasers are going to do the trick.
Anyone out there have a contractor that they have used for tub resurfacing AND would recommend them in the Dallas, Tx area? Thanks!
I am planning to buy a house in Colorado that has a driveway with some significant surface deterioration, apparently from excessive use of salts to melt snow.
Other driveways in the neighborhood have the same problem to a lesser extent.
The structure seems sound; the driveway is only 15 years old.Do you have any experience with Quikrete Concrete Resurfacer or a similar product? I am particularly interested in how well the new surface holds up over time.
So one of our rentals has a concrete slab in the backyard - it covers the entire area (700 sq feet) from garage to building to property line.
It looks like crap and every spring I have to shop vac up all the loose gravel that winter causes.
This year was so bad rock sized chunks are coming off of it.
So my questions is...
what can I do to it to seal/smooth it out and prevent this happening every year? Can I put self leveling concrete over it or do I need to have a contractor come out?
I'm rehabbing a home in an area where granite is not the norm.
The counter tops are in decent condition, but have some stains.
Has anyone resurfaced their laminate counter tops and sinks? Plan is to sell home.
This tub looks like its been resurfaced a few times and it keeps wearing.
Is that normal? it's in a $1200 rental, would you just resurface again? Is there a better option? I don't want to tear out, the cost is too much.
