Timothy Daniel Pool (born March 9, 1986) is an American journalist, YouTuber, and political commentator.[1] He first became known for live streaming the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011.[6][7] Pool grew up with three siblings in Chicago's South Side in a lower-middle-class family.
He left school at age 14.[8][9] In the context of the Occupy movement, Pool's footage has been aired on NBC and other mainstream networks.[10][11][10][12][13] Pool's use of live streaming video and aerial drones during Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011 led to an article in The Guardian querying whether such activities could take the form of counterproductive surveillance.[14] In January 2012, he was physically accosted by a masked assailant.[15][16] Pool's video taken during the protests was instrumental evidence in the acquittal of photographer Alexander Arbuckle, who had been arrested by the NYPD.
The video showed that the arresting officer lied under oath, though no charges were filed.[17] Pool used a live-chat stream to respond to questions from viewers while reporting Occupy Wall Street.[18] Pool has also let his viewers direct him on where to shoot footage.[19] He modified a toy remote-controlled Parrot AR.Drone for aerial surveillance and modified software for live streaming into a system called DroneStream.[10][20][14] Pool was nominated as a Time 100 personality in March 2012.[21] While covering the NoNATO protests at the 2012 Chicago summit, Pool, along with four others, was pulled over by a dozen Chicago police officers in unmarked vehicles.
The group was removed from the vehicle at gunpoint, questioned and briefly detained.
The reason given by police was that the vehicle the team had been in matched a description.
The group was released after 10 minutes.[22] In 2013, Pool joined Vice Media producing and hosting content as well as developing new methods of reporting.[23] In 2013, he also reported on the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul with Google Glass.[24][23] In April 2013, he received a Shorty Award in the "Best Journalist in Social Media" category.[25] In 2014, he joined Fusion TV as Director of Media innovation and Senior Correspondent.[26][27][28] In the end of 2013 as Vice correspondent Pool covered and live streamed mass protests in Ukraine which (the protests) led to collapse of Yanukovych government.[29] In February 2017, Pool traveled to Sweden to investigate right-wing claims of "no-go zones" and problems with refugees in the country.
He launched a crowdfunding effort to do so after Donald Trump alluded to crimes related to immigration in Sweden.
Infowars writer Paul Joseph Watson offered to pay for travel costs and accommodation for any reporter "to stay in crime-ridden migrant suburbs of Malmö."[30][31] Watson donated $2,000 to Pool's crowdfund to travel to Sweden.
While in Sweden, Pool largely disputed that migrant suburbs of Malmö and Stockholm were crime-ridden, saying that Chicago is vastly more violent.[32][30][31] However, Pool alleged that he had to be escorted by police out of Rinkeby, a Stockholm suburb, due to purported threats to his safety.
Swedish police have disputed Pool's claims, stating, "Our understanding is that he didn't receive an escort.
However, he followed the police who left the place."[33] The police stated that, "When Tim Pool took out a camera and started filming a group of young people pulled their hoods up and covered their faces and shouted at him to stop filming.
The officers then told Tim Pool that it was not wise to stay there in the middle of the square and keep filming."[33] Pool is a co-founder of Tagg.ly, a mobile application for watermarking photos and videos in order to allow copyrights to be withheld by users.[34] Tim Pool also co-founded the news company Subverse (Now SCNR.Com), which raised $1 million in 22 hours via regulation crowdfunding in 2019, surpassing the previous record on Wefunder.[35] Pool's political commentary since the 2016 United States presidential election has been variously described as left-wing[36] and right-wing.[37] He has described himself as a social liberal who supported Bernie Sanders in 2016.
According to Politico, Pool's "views on issues including social media bias and immigration often align with conservatives'".[38] According to Al Jazeera, "Pool has amplified claims that conservative media endure persecution and bias at the hands of tech companies."[39]
ASP – America’s Swimming Pool Company is a franchised swimming pool service chain, specializing in swimming pool maintenance, repair, and renovation.
Stewart Vernon founded the first ASP - America's Swimming Pool Company in 2001[1] in Macon, Georgia, where the franchise headquarters currently resides.[2] Stewart Vernon, founder & CEO of ASP – America’s Swimming Pool Company, opened his first swimming pool service company in Macon, GA in 2001.
Through an apprenticeship with a local pool service expert who was preparing to retire, Vernon learned the industry inside and out.[3] He purchased service equipment and a truck, and began working as an owner/operator.
By age 22, Vernon had successfully launched the first ASP.[4] As his individual business grew, Vernon was presented with the concept of changing his business model into a franchise, offering the ability to expand the brand across the nation.
After researching the franchise concept, Vernon founded ASP Franchising and began selling franchises in 2006.[3][5] Over 15 years, the company has grown to 82 locations serving 200 territories, in 20 states.
As of 2015, each of the 82 franchises is individually owned and operated.[6] Vernon began franchising the business in 2006,[3] detailed below is a total of the number of franchise owners that have joined the company over the years: Since the launch of the first franchises in 2006, ASP has received multiple awards and recognitions, including, but not limited to, the following:
Coordinates: 59°54′55″N 10°38′18″E / 59.91528°N 10.63833°E / 59.91528; 10.63833 Nord Pool AS is a European power exchange owned by Euronext and the continental Nordic and Baltic countries' Transmission system operators (TSOs).
Nord Pool delivers power trading across Europe.
Nord Pool offers day-ahead and intraday trading, clearing and settlement, data and compliance, as well as consultancy services.
More than 360 customers trade on Nord Pool today.
Nord Pool operates power trading markets in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg, France and the United Kingdom.
Nord Pool is a Nominated Electricity Market Operator (NEMO) in 15 European countries, while also providing serviced power markets in Croatia and Bulgaria.
In 2019 Nord Pool had a total turnover of 494 TWh traded power, this includes more than 90% of total power consumption in the Nordic and Baltic market.
The company has offices in Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, London and Berlin.
Nord Pool traces its origin to Foreningen Samkjøringen (lit.
the Coordination Association), a power exchange formed by eastern Norwegian electricity companies in 1932 on the initiative of Augustin Paus, and which soon encompassed all the electricity companies in eastern Norway.
In 1971 the exchange merged with the regional exchanges in other parts of Norway, and became Samkjøringen av kraftverkene i Norge (literally the Coordination of Power Stations in Norway), with 118 power companies as members as of 1988.
In 1991 the Norwegian parliament decided to deregulate the market for power trading.
In 1993 Statnett Marked AS was established as an independent company.
In 1996, the Swedish electricity market was also deregulated.
Statnett Marked AS was subsequently replaced by Nord Pool ASA, owned in equal parts by the Swedish and Norwegian Transmission System Operators (TSOs), Svenska Kraftnät and Statnett.
This contributed to the unification of the two countries' electricity markets.
Finland as well as western and eastern Denmark joined Nord Pool ASA in 1998, 1999 and 2000, respectively.
In 2000, Nord Pool ASA participated in establishing the Leipzig Power Exchange (now part of the European Energy Exchange).
Nord Pool also supplied its technology to France's Powernext exchange.
On 27 December 2001, Nord Pool ASA's spot market (derivatives and physical energy markets) activities were spun off into a new company, Nord Pool Spot AS.
The remaining parts of Nord Pool ASA were later acquired by Nasdaq, and are presently known as Nasdaq Commodities.[a] In 2005, Nord Pool Spot AS started trading and clearing of European Union (EU) emission allowances, becoming the first exchange to expand its activities into this area.
The company expanded its activities to Germany by opening the KONTEK bidding area.
On 12 January 2010, Nord Pool Spot AS in cooperation with Nasdaq Commodities launched the N2EX power market in the United Kingdom.[7] On 2 February 2010, Nord Pool Spot signed an agreement with the Estonian national grid company Elering to create the Nord Pool Spot Estlink bidding area starting from 1 April 2010.[8] Nord Pool Spot also delivered the technical solution for the Lithuanian market place Baltpool.[9] On 9 June 2010, APX-ENDEX, Belpex and Nord Pool Spot agreed to create a cross-border intraday electricity market based on Nord Pool Spot's Elbas technology.
Today, the common intraday market includes the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.[10] Prior to Euronext's acquisition, Nord Pool was owned by the Nordic countries' TSOs:[citation needed] In 2012, Nord Pool Spot opened a bidding area in Lithuania, and in 2013 the Latvian market was opened.[11] On 20 January 2016, Nord Pool Spot AS was rebranded to Nord Pool AS.[12] In 2017, a new clearing and settlement system was launched and a new GB half hourly auction was introduced.
In addition, Nord Pool was nominated as a NEMO in the island of Ireland and joined forces with Agder Energi to develop NODES, a new marketplace capable of exploiting decentralised flexibility.[citation needed] On 27 August 2019 Nord Pool started trading in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria and the Netherlands, the result of a European Union decision to allow several power exchanges to operate in the same markets, increasing competition.[13] On 5 December 2019 Euronext announced that it would acquire 66% of Nord Pool.[14][1] The acquisition was completed on 15 January 2020.[15] Ownership after Euronext's acquisition:[1] Nord Pool has its main office in Lysaker (Oslo) and further offices in Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, Berlin and London.[16] It is owned by Euronext and the national grid companies Fingrid, Energinet, Statnett, Svenska Kraftnät, and Litgrid, and have wholly owned subsidiaries Nord Pool AB and Nord Pool Finland Oy.
Nord Pool AS has 360 trading customers in about 20 countries.
These include public and private energy producers, energy intensive industries, large consumers, distributors, funds, investment companies, banks, brokers, utility companies and financial institutions.[17]
A Dead pool, also known as a death pool, is a game of prediction which involves guessing when someone will die.
Sometimes it is a bet where money is involved.[1] In the early 20th century, Dead pools were popular in dangerous sports such as motorsport, for example the first edition of the Indianapolis 500.[2] A typical modern Dead pool might have players pick out celebrities who they think will die within the year.
Most games start on January 1 and run for 12 months, although there are some variations on game length and timing.[citation needed] In 2000, website Fucked Company claimed to be a "dot-com Dead pool" which invited users to predict the next Internet startups to fail during that era's dot com bust.[3] The site itself folded in 2007 after a long history as a target for strategic lawsuits against public participation by companies.[4] Because of the high body count in the first seven seasons of the popular fantasy television series Game of Thrones, Dead pools were launched for its final season.[5] The Rotten.com Dead pool, the largest in the world,[6] uses NNDB as its source of qualified celebrities, and as arbiter of their life status.
The concept and success strategies are also detailed in a (previously) annual guide called The Dead pool, written by KQRS-FM radio personality Mike Gelfand and author Mike Wilkinson.
KQRS-FM in Minneapolis/St.
Paul, Minnesota also does an annual on air Dead pool contest, where show hosts and listeners will attempt to pick which celebrity will die in that calendar year.
In his AP news article "Some say death pools are in poor taste"[7] (which brought national attention to The Old Blue Eyes Celebrity Death Watch), author Matt Sedensky writes, "Players scour newspapers and Web sites for news on celebrities' health; they rely on tips from insiders; and they consider a public figure's lifestyle, absence of recent appearances and rumors of illness." Britain's premier Dead pool in recent years has been the Derby Dead pool[8], which has run for over 25 years and received an article detailing its players on the BBC website[9].
A Dead pool is a key plot element of the 1988 final installment of the Dirty Harry film series, The Dead pool.
Harry investigates the players, when several people listed in a game of Dead pool die in suspicious circumstances.
The Marvel Comics character Deadpool (first appearing in 1991) takes his name after escaping from Ajax and Dr.
Killebrew, who formed their own Dead pool based on which of their experimental subjects would die first.[10] In the 2016 film Deadpool, the titular character takes his hero name from a Dead pool of mercenaries, himself included, who are regular patrons at his favorite bar.
In the MTV show Teen Wolf, the main plotline of Season 4 (2014) revolves around a Dead pool specifically targeting the supernaturals of Beacon Hills, which is set up by a mysterious character named The Benefactor.
In patent law, a Patent pool is a consortium of at least two companies agreeing to cross-license patents relating to a particular technology.
The creation of a Patent pool can save patentees and licensees time and money, and, in case of blocking patents, it may also be the only reasonable method for making the invention available to the public.[1] Competition law issues are usually important when a large consortium is formed.
One of the first Patent pools, Sewing Machine Combination, was formed in 1856, by sewing machine manufacturers Grover, Baker, Singer, and Wheeler & Wilson, all accusing the others of patent infringement.
They met in Albany, New York to pursue their suits.
Orlando B.
Potter, a lawyer and president of the Grover and Baker Company, proposed that, rather than sue their profits out of existence, they pool their patents (See also: Isaac Singer/I.
M.
Singer & Co).
In 1917, the two major patent holders for airplanes, the Wright Company and the Curtiss Company, had effectively blocked the building of new airplanes, which were desperately needed as the United States was entering World War I.
The U.S.
government, as a result of a recommendation of a committee formed by Franklin D.
Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, pressured the industry to form a Patent pool, the Manufacturer's Aircraft Association.[2][3][4] In a more modern example, in August 2005, a Patent pool was formed by about 20 companies active in the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) domain.[5] The RFID Consortium picked Via Licensing to administer its Patent pool in September 2006.[6] As in these examples many industries could not function without Patent pools since the coordination costs (risk, negotiation, etc.) would otherwise be too high.
Patent pools are only one example of cases where members of an otherwise competitive industry join in common cause to create some resource that is to their collective benefit.
For example, the insurance industry pools claims data to collectively reduce risk; the catalog sales industry pools sales data to better model their customers; the auto industry collaborates to standardize components; and in the software industry some companies actively contribute to open-source projects.[citation needed] Patent pools do not eliminate risk, they only temper it.
Patent holders (including other Patent pools) outside the pool can still create cost and risk for the industry.
While it is rare for a Patent pool to indemnify licensees,[7][self-published source?] a pool does help to assure a common interest will emerge should one member be accused of infringement by a third party.
Flaws in the design of the pool's governance can create the risk that one member can break the common cause of the group.
Examples of well-known[citation needed] such cases include the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 video coding standards, and the DVD6C pool.[citation needed] The MPEG-2 Patent pool has also been criticized because by 2015 more than 90% of the MPEG-2 patents will have expired but as long as there are one or more active patents in the MPEG-2 Patent pool in either the country of manufacture or the country of sale the MPEG-2 license agreement requires that licensees pay a license fee that does not change based on the number of patents that have expired.[8][9][10][11] Since the 1990s, Patent pools have been viewed by U.S.
regulatory authorities in a positive light.
In 1995, the U.S.
Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released the “Antitrust Guidelines for the Licensing of Intellectual Property”[12] which stated that the pooling of patents may have “…pro-competitive benefits”.[13] The Antitrust Division of the DOJ later issued a letter in support of the MPEG-2 pool.[12] However, stipulations exist to ensure pools do not function anti-competitively.
As required by the DOJ, patents in the pool must be essential, non-substitutable and the owners must maintain the right to individually license their patents.[12] In addition, the DOJ may monitor the royalty rates collected by the firm.[12]
Pool Reinsurance Company Limited, also known as Pool Re, was set up in 1993 by the insurance industry in cooperation with the UK Government in the wake of the IRA bombing of the Baltic Exchange in 1992.[1] Pool Re is a mutual reinsurer whose members comprise the vast majority of insurers and Lloyd’s Syndicates which offer commercial property insurance in the UK, with membership of the scheme affording them a guarantee which ensures that they can provide cover for losses resulting from acts of terrorism, regardless of the scale of the claims.
The Scheme, which was the first public/private partnership to cover insured losses caused by acts of terrorism,[2] is owned by its members but is underpinned by a HM Treasury commitment to support Pool Re if ever it has insufficient funds to pay a legitimate claim.
Pool Re pays a premium to the Government for this guarantee and would repay the money over time if it ever used this facility.
In the event of a loss resulting from an act of terrorism, each member must first pay losses up to a threshold that is determined individually for each insurer.
If losses exceed that threshold, the insurer can claim upon Pool Re’s reserves.
These reserves have been accumulated by the members of Pool Re since its inception.
It is only in the event that these reserves are exhausted that Pool Re would draw upon Government support.
Pool Re was established following a series of terrorist incidents in the early 1990s in London and elsewhere in England related to the situation in Northern Ireland at that time.
The cost of these losses caused insurers and reinsurers to consider ceasing to provide terrorism cover for commercial properties because of the high potential cost of losses and the lack of any reliable method of estimating what the future loss experience might be.
Insurers depend on reinsurers for financial protection when very large claims occur and, accordingly, both insurers and reinsurers decided they could no longer provide terrorism cover using traditional methods.
A withdrawal of terrorism insurance that left areas of business unprotected would potentially have had serious consequences for the UK economy.
It became necessary, therefore, to devise a new mechanism for providing this type of cover, without leaving insurers or reinsurers open to substantial losses for which there was no reliable method of calculating accurate premiums.
During the latter part of 1992 it became clear that any new scheme would require the joint involvement of the insurance industry and government.
Following extensive dialogue, a suitable structure emerged and the details of the Pool Re scheme were developed.[3] The Pool Re scheme began operations in 1993 and has subsequently been involved in claims arising from thirteen separate terrorism incidents covering losses of over £600 million.[4] Since its inception, the scheme has adapted to changing circumstances in the insurance market.
The most significant changes occurred after the attacks in America on September 11th 2001, which caused insurers and reinsurers to reconsider the way terrorism coverage should be offered.
Until that date the conventional insurance and reinsurance market had been willing to dovetail the cover they provided with that available from the Pool Re scheme.
Pool Re’s cover to insurers was restricted to damage caused by acts involving fire or explosion, and the international reinsurance market covered other types of terrorism.
After 9/11, however, reinsurers were no longer in a position to do so.
Had Pool Re continued with these restrictions, insurers would have been unable to provide their customers with cover for terrorist events not involving fire or explosion.
In an attempt to avoid this situation, there were discussions between representatives of the insurance industry, buyers of insurance, the UK government, Pool Re and others.
In July 2002 an agreement was reached to widen cover and amend certain other features of the scheme in a way that responded to these changing needs.
In particular, Pool Re’s cover was extended to an “all risks” basis, and no longer restricted to fire or explosion.
In addition, exclusions relating to chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) attack were removed.
Risks related to war and cyber threats are still excluded until April 2018.
On November 15, 2017 Steve Coates the Chief Underwriter for Pool Re announced wider cover, which now includes cyber-terrorism, and will be available from April 2018.
The scope of our cover is designed to protect commercial property and will be offered as standard to all policyholders buying terrorism insurance from a Pool Re Member.
"The cover is effectively Material Damage and direct Business Interruption (BI), so BI flows only from events happening at the policyholder’s premises.
We will not be providing cover for intangible assets, specifically Money and Data, which are more appropriately covered by the cyber market."[5]
An Infinity pool is a reflecting or swimming pool where the water flows over one or more edges, producing a visual effect of water with no boundary.
Such pools are often designed so that the edge appears to merge with a larger body of water such as the ocean, or with the sky.
They are often seen at resorts, estates, and in other luxurious places.[1][2][3] It has been claimed[by whom?] that the Infinity pool concept originated in France, and that one of the first vanishing-edge designs was the Stag Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, built in the late 17th century.[4] In the US, architect John Lautner has been credited as one of the first to come up with an Infinity pool design in the early 1960s.
He included Infinity pools in various residential projects, and also created the vanishing-edge pool in the 1971 James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever.[4] Infinity pools are expensive and require extensive structural, mechanical, and architectural detailing.[citation needed] Since they are often built in precarious locations, sound structural engineering is paramount.
The high cost of these pools often arises from the elaborate foundation systems that anchor them to hillsides.[citation needed] The "infinite" edge of the pool terminates at a weir that is 1⁄16 to 1⁄4 inch (2 to 6 mm) lower than the required pool water level.
A trough or catch basin is constructed below the weir.
The water spills into the catch basin, from where it is pumped back into the pool.
Leslie's Poolmart, operating as Leslie's Swimming Pool Supplies, is the largest retailer of swimming pool supplies and related products.
Leslie's sells a full range of supplies for pool maintenance, including chemicals, cleaning devices, equipment and parts, as well as recreational and safety products for swimming pools.
Leslie's also sells supplies for hot tub/spa maintenance as well as, patio and backyard furniture and accessories.
The company operates over 930 stores in 36 states throughout the U.S.[1] According to a company representative, Leslie’s employs 3,500 people year-round and adds hundreds of seasonal employees, bringing its workforce to above 5,000 during its peak summer season.
Leslie's stocks essential pool maintenance and cleaning supplies, in addition to pool accessories and pool toys, and has more than 30,000 items available through the company's other distribution channels, such as its website and special order processes.[2] Leslie's also sells its own brand of pool supplies, which accounted for a large portion of the company's total sales in 2009.[2] In addition to pool and spa supplies, Leslie's is one of the largest retailers of pool services and repairs in the U.S.
The company is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, and has a particularly strong retail presence in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia and Texas.
Leslie's was founded in 1963 by Phil Leslie, Jr.
(son of Hollywood comedy writer Phil Leslie, Sr.) in a single location in North Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Leslie, together with partner Raymond Cesmat, began the company by opening a chain of swimming pool supply stores in the Greater Los Angeles area.[3] The two founding partners, Leslie and Cesmat, began fighting over the future of the company in the late 1980s, and Cesmat determined he wanted to sell his stake.
In 1987, Leslie offered to buy Cesmat's stock at a prior agreed-upon price, but Cesmat would not accept.
Cesmat filed to have the corporation dissolved, and in 1988, a California superior court judge ordered the company be sold.
The company was acquired, in a hostile take-over, for $23 million by private equity firm Hancock Park Associates.
Leslie received $10 million from the sale of the company but was vocal that the company had been taken from him, as the sale was highly leveraged and court-ordered.[3] Following the sale of the company, managers at most Leslie's stores refused to open their stores in an expression of loyalty to Mr.
Leslie.
Ultimately, the new ownership and management were able to replace managers of stores that refused to open.[3] By the early 1990s, the company was again generating profits, and the company listed its stock on NASDAQ.
A 1991 initial public offering raised $28 million for the sale of 47% of the company, using the cash to repay debt and fund an expansion of the business.[4] From the beginning of 1989 through the end of 1996, Leslie's grew from 66 to 259 company-owned and operated stores, including 23 stores added in September 1992 through the acquisition of Sandy's Pool Supply, Inc., which Mr.
Leslie half-owned and had expanded from just two stores.[5] In 1997, the company was taken private for $140 million by Hancock, assisted by private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners.[6] In 2010, Leonard Green explored a sale of the company targeting in excess of $1 billion for the company.[7][8] In lieu of a sale, Leonard Green ultimately sold a substantial stake in the company to CVC Capital Partners and GSO Capital Partners.[9] In 2014, Leslie's comprised over 750 stores, expanding to 910 by 2015.
In 2017 Leslie's Poolmart was acquired by L Catterton, which claims to be the largest consumer-focused private equity firm in the world.[10] In February 2020, Michael Egeck assumed the role of chief executive officer.
Drowning Pool is an American rock band formed in Dallas, Texas in 1996.
The band was named after the 1975 film The Drowning Pool.[1] Since its formation, the band has consisted of guitarist C.J.
Pierce, bassist Stevie Benton, and drummer Mike Luce, as well as a revolving cast of vocalists, the latest being Jasen Moreno.
After the release of their debut album, Sinner (2001), original vocalist Dave Williams was found dead on August 14, 2002[2] from heart disease.
Jason Jones, who replaced Williams in 2003, recorded one album, Desensitized (2004), but left in 2005 due to musical differences.[2] Ryan McCombs of Chicago-based band SOiL, later replaced Jones and released two albums, Full Circle (2007) and Drowning Pool (2010), making it the first time Drowning Pool had not switched singers after just one album.[2] However, McCombs left the band in 2011 to rejoin SOiL.[2] Jasen Moreno was announced as McCombs' replacement in 2012, and the band has since recorded two albums with him: Resilience (2013) and Hellelujah (2016).
Drowning Pool formed in Dallas, Texas in 1996.
Guitarist C.J.
Pierce and drummer Mike Luce formed Drowning Pool after relocating from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Dallas.
There, they found and recruited bassist Stevie Benton.
For a few years they stuck to performing as an instrumental trio, but this all changed in 1999 with the arrival of vocalist Dave Williams.[3] After recording a demo, Drowning Pool hooked up with Sevendust which got Drowning Pool in touch with Hed PE and Kittie.
After touring with these bands, Drowning Pool got their demos enough radio play to get signed by Wind-up Records.
The band made music with producer Jay Baumgardner.[4] Drowning Pool rose to fame with their debut album and played at the Ozzfest in 2001.[4] Their 2001 debut album Sinner was certified platinum within six weeks.[5] A number of songs from the album were featured at various WWE events that year, and three tracks would be included on the soundtrack for the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge in early 2002.
On August 14 that year, Dave Williams was found dead inside his tour bus.[1] He died from an undiagnosed heart condition, now known to be cardiomyopathy.[6][7][8] When asked if the band had any unreleased songs, according to a 2002 Blabbermouth article, drummer Mike Luce replied that "only 3-4 songs were done, including one called "Heroes," which is a tribute to dead rock musicians such as Layne Staley.
I don't know if we will ever release them."[9] In 2003, Jason 'Gong' Jones replaced Williams as Drowning Pool's vocalist[10] and the band released the album Desensitized in 2004.
Despite the success of the album's lead single, "Step Up," the album was not nearly as successful as Sinner, and it was publicly announced on June 14, 2005 that Jones had departed from the band, due to "irreconcilable differences".[11] The band announced that their replacement singer would be formally announced at Ozzfest in Dallas, where the band did a one-off performance on the main stage.
On July 20, 2005, the website SMNNews[12] revealed that Ryan McCombs, then former singer of SOiL, was the new vocalist.
The band initially wanted McCombs to join Drowning Pool as the replacement of Dave Williams, nearly two years prior.[13] In spring of 2006, the band announced that they had parted ways with Wind-up Records.[14] In October 2006, a new song "No More" was announced to be released on the Saw III soundtrack, their first song (besides a re-recorded version of "Rise Up") with McCombs.
The bands recorded version of "Rise Up", was used as the theme song for WWE SmackDown from September 30, 2004 – September 26, 2008.[15] The band signed a new deal with Eleven Seven Music[16] and also announced a new management company, Tenth Street Entertainment.[17] The band's third album, Full Circle, was released on August 7, 2007.
Two songs on the album were produced by Funny Farm Records, owned by Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and former Beautiful Creatures guitarist DJ Ashba.
The remaining songs were produced by Ben Schigel at the Ohio-based Spider Studios.[18] The band then toured with Saliva in North America and also Sick Puppies and Seether in support of the album.[19][20] Later in the year, work on a fourth album was announced.[21] On March 3, 2009, the band released a live album, Loudest Common Denominator, which featured acoustic versions of "Shame" and "37 Stitches" from Full Circle.[22] The band finished recording their self-titled album with producer Kato Khandwala at House of Loud in New Jersey.[23] It was the first studio album in the band's history not to feature a change of vocalist from the preceding album.
The album's first single "Feel Like I Do", was released as a free download on their official website, and the album was released on April 27, 2010.[24] On November 7, 2011, C.J.
Pierce and Mike Luce announced a new project with former Nonpoint members Zach Broderick and Ken McMillan titled Voodoo Corps.[25] In November 2011, McCombs left the band to reunite with SOiL for touring and a new album.
The band, now once again without a singer, began writing new material for a fifth studio album while holding vocalist auditions.[26] In July 2012, Jasen Moreno, from The Suicide Hook, was announced to be the band's new vocalist.[27] On August 14, the 10th anniversary of Dave Williams' death, the band released a song in tribute of him, their first with Moreno titled "In Memory Of...".[28] Two further singles were released with Moreno, "Saturday Night" in November 2012,[29] and "One Finger and a Fist" in December 2012, before the band released their fifth album, Resilience, on April 9, 2013.[30] On September 10, the band announced that they would celebrate the thirteenth anniversary of Sinner with a U.S.
tour starting from October 22, in which they plan to dig deep into the songs from their debut album.[31] Drowning Pool released a reissue of their album "Sinner" called the "Unlucky 13th Anniversary Edition" in 2014.[32] The band signed to eOne Music in August 2015.[33] On October 13, it was announced the band's sixth album titled Hellelujah would be released January 22, 2016 via eOne Music with producer Jason Suecof.[34] The date was later postponed to February 5.
On November 19, the band released new single from their Hellelujah album called "By the Blood".[35] On May 17, 2016 the band announced that they would be taking part in the Make America Rock Again super tour on select dates throughout the summer and fall 2016.
The tour featured other artists who had success throughout the 2000s, including Trapt, Saliva, Saving Abel, Crazy Town, 12 Stones and Tantric, Fuel, Puddle Of Mudd and P.O.D..[36] In December 2017, it was reported that Drowning Pool had begun writing their seventh studio album.
In an interview with 97.1 The Eagle, guitarist C.J.
Pierce stated, "We're working on new songs right now, which is awesome.
We're working on tunes for the next record.
We have a bunch of stuff on the plate.
Everybody's brought amazing stuff, material.
The thing with this is just to try and go through and see what we're gonna do on the next record.
So we'll hash out all the ideas and songs and then start narrowing it down.
So it's nice to have more than enough to go through."[37] The band began recording their new album in February 2019.[38] The band has faced some controversies and criticism due to the alleged misinterpretation of the lyrics to their most well-known song "Bodies".
In 2011, the song was associated with the 2011 Arizona shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.[39] Shortly after the shooting, the band made a statement addressing the link: "We were devastated this weekend to learn of the tragic events that occurred in Arizona and that our music has been misinterpreted.
'Bodies' was written about the brotherhood of the moshpit and was never about violence." The band also added: "For someone to put out a video misinterpreting a song about a moshpit as fuel for a violent act shows just how sick they really are.
We support those who do what they can to keep America safe.
Our hearts go out to the victims and their families of this terrible tragedy".[39] "Bodies" was used consistently by interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay detention camps in 2003, and was consistently played over a 10-day period in 2006 during interrogations of Mohamedou Ould Slahi while he was "exposed to variable lighting patterns" at the same time.[40][41][42] On December 9, 2008, bassist Stevie Benton was quoted by the Associated Press as considering it an honor that the U.S.
military was using the band's music for "enhanced interrogation" of captured prisoners.[43] On December 13, 2008, he issued an apology on the band's MySpace page about his comment on musical torture, stating his comment had been "taken out of context."[44] Drowning Pool's style has been considered heavy metal,[45] alternative metal,[46] hard rock,[47][48] post-grunge[49] and nu metal,[50][51] as well as being part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
The band has also been influenced by black metal and death metal.[52] The band's influences include Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Anthrax, Testament, Slipknot, Alice in Chains, Opeth, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Slayer, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, the Beatles, Pantera, Sepultura and Suicidal Tendencies.[40][52][53] Current members Former members Timeline
+POOL (or +Pool) is an initiative to bring a floating swimming pool to the East River, on the Manhattan and/or Brooklyn banks, in New York City; a permanent location has yet to have been determined.[2] The 9,300 square feet (860 m2) pool would be filled with water filtered from the river it floats in.
The two companies behind it, Family New York and PlayLab, have been using the crowdfunding website Kickstarter to raise money for the project.
The planned cross-shaped, Olympic-sized pool[3] would be used to clean the waters of the East River while providing a public space for water-based recreation.[4] With its current design, the pool would flush out up to half a million gallons of river water daily through a layered filtration system.[5] Over a quarter of a million gallons of filtered river water would be used to fill the pool itself.[6] The planned long-term goal is to raise a total of $15 million to fund the entire pool by 2016.[5][7] In July 2011, the team raised over $41,000 on Kickstarter to test filtration materials using water from the East River.[8] With the help of researchers at Columbia University, the tests yielded feasibility,[9] and in July 2013 over a quarter million dollars was raised to build a 35 square foot miniature version of the floating pool.[10] The "test lab" is to be a working prototype to analyze its effectiveness in river conditions.[5] Since its conception, several independent companies have participated in the +POOL project, including engineering firm Arup,[9][11] design firm IDEO, environmental consultants from One Nature, and art institution Storefront for Art and Architecture.[12][13] The project has also been met with interest from government officials, notably New York State Senator Daniel Squadron and New York City Council Member Brad Lander.[14][15] In November 2013, Time magazine ranked +POOL as one of the 25 best inventions of the year 2013.[16] The pool was projected to open in mid-2016.[2][3] Not much visible progress was made through 2016, but in April 2017, it was announced that a partnership with Heineken was formed.[17]
The Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve is a protected marine nature reserve located in the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Shark Bay in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia.
The 127,000-hectare (310,000-acre)[1] nature reserve boasts the most diverse and abundant examples of living marine stromatolites in the world, monuments to life on Earth over 3,500 million years BP.[2] Hamelin Pool is the eastern major waters within Shark Bay, separated from the western area by the Peron Peninsula, with a smaller water body just adjacent to its northern border with Faure Island - L'Haridon Bight the juncture being defined by Petit Point.
At the northern edge of the Hamelin Pool area is the Wooramel Seagrass Bank.[3] The marine reserve is situated adjacent to the Hamelin Station Reserve and the historic Hamelin Pool Telegraph Station about 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of the Overlander Roadhouse on the North West Coastal Highway.
Access is via Hamelin Pool Road and then through the Hamelin Pool Telegraph Station grounds.
Access is free.
The Marine Reserve covers 1,270 square kilometres (490 sq mi).
It is one of only a few places in the world where living marine stromatolites can be found.[4] Other locations for stromatolites include an underwater site (6 metres (20 ft) deep) in the Caribbean, Persian Gulf, and in the Great Salt Lake of Utah.
Hamelin Pool contains the most diverse range of stromatolites and microbial diversity in the world.[5][6] The stromatolites in Hamelin Pool were discovered by surveyors working for an oil exploration company in 1956 and were the first living examples of structures built by cyanobacteria.[7] The cyanobacteria living in Hamelin Pool are direct descendants of the oldest form of photosynthetic life on earth.[8] The stromatolites are similar to 3,500 million year old stromatolite fossils found in many places around the world.
Stromatolites are an example of the earliest record of life on earth.
They are found around the shores, mostly in the neighbourhood of 26°23′S 114°09′E / 26.383°S 114.150°E / -26.383; 114.150.
Hamelin Pool is hypersaline (it has approximately double the salinity of normal seawater), providing an ideal environment for the stromatolites to grow, and inhibiting other marine life which would normally feed on the bacteria.
The cyanobacteria live in communities on the sea bed at densities of 3 billion individuals per square metre.
They are the simplest life forms to use photosynthesis to provide food and oxygen.
They provided the early Earth with most of its oxygen atmosphere billions of years before plants appeared.
Very fine particles of solids i.e.
sand, crushed shell etc.
are trapped by the sticky bacteria, to become cemented with calcium carbonate produced by the bacteria, thereby building up the stromatolite structures.
Some structures are pillars up to 1.5 metres (5 ft) high and have taken thousands of years to grow.
In the Marble Bar area of Western Australia there are fossil stromatolites approximately 50 metres (160 ft) high and 30 metres (98 ft) diameter.
These are estimated to be over three billion years old.
Typical growth is about 0.5 millimetres (0.020 in) per year.
There are three basic types of stromatolite, the sub-tidal (always under water) columns and the inter-tidal (exposed to air and sun during low tides) anvil or mushroom shapes depicted in most pictures.
Algal mats form in the inter-tidal region and appear as areas of flat black mud flats but are actually living stromatolite.
At Hamelin Pool there is an interpretive boardwalk for tourists to venture out and examine the stromatolite structures.
This is the only access area for the general public because of the fragile nature of the environment in the Hamelin Pool.[9] The Hutchinson Island and the Pelican Island are located within the nature reserve.
At the Historic Hamelin Pool Telegraph Station built in 1884 and Historic Old Post Office first built in 1886 now the local Community Post Office/Public Phone Box.
The museum showing information on the growth of stromatolites and includes what is the only stromatolites living in captivity (in an aquarium) in the world.
The museum also covers the building and operation of the Historic Telegraph Station back to the 1880s.[10]
The Dead Pool is a 1988 American action thriller film directed by Buddy Van Horn, written by Steve Sharon, and starring Clint Eastwood as Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan.[4] It is the fifth and final film in the Dirty Harry film series, set in San Francisco, California.
The story concerns the manipulation of a dead pool game by a serial killer, whose efforts are confronted by the hardened detective Callahan.
It co-stars Liam Neeson and Patricia Clarkson, with Jim Carrey in his first dramatic role.
It is the only film in the series to not feature Albert Popwell, an actor who had played a different character in each of the previous four films.
At 91 minutes, it is the shortest of the five Dirty Harry films.
Like those films, The Dead Pool is notable for coining catchphrases uttered by Clint Eastwood's gun-wielding character, one of which is: "Opinions are like assholes; everybody has one".[5] SFPD Inspector Harry Callahan's testimony against crime kingpin Lou Janero puts the mobster in prison.
Callahan becomes famous and the target of Janero's men, both of which he dislikes.
After Callahan kills four attackers during an ambush, the department assigns Al Quan (Evan C.
Kim) as his partner; Callahan advises him to get a bulletproof vest, as his partners often get killed.
They investigate the heroin overdose death of rock singer Johnny Squares (Jim Carrey), found in his trailer during filming of a slasher film directed by Peter Swan (Liam Neeson) at the Port of San Francisco.
We see that his death was not a typical overdose, but is actually murder.
Dean Madison, Swan's executive producer, is killed during a Chinatown restaurant robbery.
Callahan kills four of the robbers, and Quan captures the fifth.
They discover a list in Madison's pocket with Callahan and Squares's names on it, and learn that Madison and Swan are participants in a "dead pool" game, in which participants predict celebrity deaths in the Bay area: whether by accident, violence, or natural causes.
Next, film critic Molly Fisher, also on Swan's list, is murdered by an intruder claiming to be Swan — causing panic among the surviving celebrities, and making Swan a suspect.
After Callahan destroys a television station's camera (filming Squares's girlfriend at the time), he must cooperate with reporter Samantha Walker (Patricia Clarkson) to avoid a lawsuit: if the famous detective agrees to a profile of his controversial career, the suit will be dropped; Callahan sees this as a ploy to exploit the danger he's in for its ratings value.
Yet after they survive another attack by Janero's men, the incident and her own unwillingness to be the subject of news coverage cause Walker to reconsider the dangers police officers face in juxtaposition with the public's right to know.
At San Quentin State Prison, where Janero is serving his sentence, Callahan uses triple murderer Butcher Hicks to threaten Janero if anything happens to him.
Janero ends the attacks, and assigns two men to Callahan as his personal bodyguards.
Gus Wheeler, claiming responsibility for the murders, douses himself in gasoline and threatens to immolate himself.
He is not the murderer, but an attention seeker desperate to appear on camera.
Walker foils Wheeler's plan by refusing to film him; Wheeler accidentally sets himself on fire, but Callahan saves him.
Impressed by her refusal to exploit Wheeler, Callahan and Walker become close.
Swan tells Callahan and Quan of Harlan Rook, a deranged fan suffering from "process schizophrenia" who thinks the director stole his ideas and work; Swan has a restraining order against him.
Rook kills talk show host Nolan Kennard, another person on The Dead Pool list, using a radio-controlled car filled with C4 explosive under the victim's vehicle.
Callahan finds a toy car wheel at the crime scene, and later sees another toy car following him and Quan.
Recognizing the threat, they flee through the city pursued by the car and Rook himself.
Trapped in an alleyway, Rook sends the car in armed.
Callahan is able to back the car up enough so the engine takes most of the blast.
Both survive, but Quan has broken ribs (the doctor at the hospital later says his bullet proof vest actually saved his life).
Rook, claiming to be Swan, calls Walker at the television station and invites her to Swan's film studio for an interview.
The police discover at Rook's apartment torn posters of Swan's films, large quantities of explosives, and Walker's name replacing Callahan's on The Dead Pool list.
At the studio, Callahan confronts Rook holding Walker hostage.
The detective surrenders his .44 Magnum revolver after Rook threatens to slit her throat.
Callahan lures Rook to a pier after a chase during which Rook shoots at him with his own gun.
Rook runs out of ammunition, and Callahan shoots Rook with a Svend Foyn harpoon cannon, impaling him.
Callahan leaves with Walker as the police arrive.
Members of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses make uncredited cameo appearances at the funeral of Johnny Squares.
They also appear during filming of a "nightmare scene" at the docks, where guitarist Slash fires a harpoon gun through a window and is berated by Swan.[6] Eastwood reacted to starring in another Dirty Harry film, "It's fun, once in a while, to have a character you can go back to.
It's like revisiting an old friend you haven't seen for a long time.
You figure 'I'll go back and see how he feels about things now.'"[7] The Dead Pool was filmed in February and March 1988 in San Francisco.[8] The Dead Pool is the only Dirty Harry film in which Albert Popwell does not appear.
He was not available due to a scheduling conflict with filming on Who's That Girl.
Callahan is pursued through San Francisco's hilly streets in his unmarked Oldsmobile 98 squad car by a miniature R/C (remote-controlled) car (assembled and controlled by Rook) containing an R/C bomb for Rook to detonate.
The R/C car used for the film was a highly modified Associated RC10 electric race buggy powered by a Reedy motor that had to be geared up high to an 8.4v NiCd battery, topped with an off-the-shelf 1963 Chevrolet Corvette R/C car body by Parma International.
The RC10 had its suspension lowered from the original to a lower ground clearance for better high-speed stability.
Needing the best R/C car driver to control the RC10 action, Van Horn hired the 1985 off-road world champion R/C driver Jay Halsey.
At first, Van Horn was unsure if the RC10 could keep up with the Oldsmobile, so for the scene where both vehicles start from the top of the hill, the director allowed both cars to start-off together.
As a result, the RC10 outran the Oldsmobile, so the scene had to be re-filmed with the Oldsmobile reaching the bottom first.
At one point in a scene where the cars interact, the RC10 jumps over the Oldsmobile, lands, and then proceeds to the end of the street to wait for the Oldsmobile.
One scene, in which Halsey was only required to drive the RC10 at full speed to where the bomb was to be detonated, required over a week to film.
A motorized tricycle with a camera mounted at ground level was used for close-up filming of the RC10 in action.[9] Engine sound effects for the electric-motor RC10 were added in post production.
The chase scenes have many similarities with the famous car-chase in the Steve McQueen film Bullitt,[8] which Eastwood has said was his favorite part of the McQueen film.
The necessity of closing down various continuously busy city streets meant that the sequences tend to jump from district to district, much as the similar scenes did in the McQueen film, making for a number of continuity errors that are easily overlooked during the fast-paced scenes, just as the motorcycle chase-scenes in the second Dirty Harry film ("Magnum Force") jumped around but are seldom mentioned.
The Dead Pool received mixed reviews from critics.
It holds a 57% approval rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 30 reviews.[10] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 46 out of 100 based on 15 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[11] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four and wrote that it was "as good as the original 'Dirty Harry,'" praising it as "smart, quick, and made with real wit."[12] Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune also awarded three-and-a-half stars out of four and called it "the second best of the series, beaten only by the 1971 original," explaining that "where the previous sequels have been mostly dour gun blasts, 'The Dead Pool' is a thriller with wit and humor and tension."[13] Vincent Canby of The New York Times wrote that the film "possesses a couple of good jokes, but nothing can disguise the fact that it's a mini-movie in the company of a mythic figure."[14] Variety wrote, "From the original on, Harry has always been a fantasy character but his stories have been involving.
Here, he remains absurdly separated from reality in an exceedingly lame yarn that lurches from one shootout to the next."[15] Michael Wilmington of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "Along with the 1976 'Enforcer,' 'The Dead Pool' is among the weakest of the entire 'Dirty Harry' series.
With its stylized story-line and almost style-less direction, it sometimes resembles a juggling act with sledgehammers."[16] Desson Howe of The Washington Post wrote, "Unless you're a Clint fan (and — own up — who isn't?) there's little other reason to sit through this one.
Eastwood, who's had far bigger concerns recently, such as directing a movie about jazz great Charlie Parker, seems content to mark time.
And pick up another check."[17] The Dead Pool was released in United States theaters in July 1988.[18] In its opening weekend, the film took $9,071,330 in 1,988 theaters in the US, at an average of $4,563.[19] In total in the US, the film made $37,903,295, making it the least profitable of the five films in the Dirty Harry franchise.[18][20] The song "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses appears as the theme song for Swan's movie, as used in a scene during filming where Johnny Squares is lip-syncing.
The band can be seen as extras during the funeral scene.
The traditional Dirty Harry End Theme (Variously called "Harry's Theme", "Sad Theme" and with lyrics "This Side of Forever") was given a full Hollywood orchestral production.
Eastwood has publicly announced that he has no interest in acting in another Dirty Harry film.
In 2000, he jokingly spoke about potential sequels: "Dirty Harry VI! Harry is retired.
He's standing in a stream, fly-fishing.
He gets tired of using the pole— and BA-BOOM! Or Harry is retired, and he catches bad guys with his walker?"[21]
A Privately held company, private company, or close corporation is a business that is not owned by the government, non-governmental organizations or by a relatively small number of shareholders or company members which does not offer or trade its company stock (shares) to the general public on the stock market exchanges, but rather the company's stock is offered, owned and traded or exchanged privately or over-the-counter.
More ambiguous terms for a Privately held company are closely held corporation, unquoted company, and unlisted company.
Though less visible than their publicly traded counterparts, private companies have major importance in the world's economy.
In 2008, the 441 largest private companies in the United States accounted for US$1,800,000,000,000 ($1.8 trillion) in revenues and employed 6.2 million people, according to Forbes.
In 2005, using a substantially smaller pool size (22.7%) for comparison, the 339 companies on Forbes' survey of closely held U.S.
businesses sold a trillion dollars' worth of goods and services (44%) and employed four million people.
In 2004, the Forbes count of privately held U.S.
businesses with at least $1 billion in revenue was 305.[1] Private ownership of productive assets differs from state ownership or collective ownership (as in worker-owned companies).
This usage is often found in former communist countries to differentiate from former state-owned enterprises,[citation needed] but it may be used anywhere when contrasting to a state-owned or a collectively owned company.
In the United States, the term Privately held company is more often used to describe for-profit enterprises whose shares are not traded on the stock market.
In countries with public trading markets, a privately held business is generally taken to mean one whose ownership shares or interests are not publicly traded.
Often, privately held companies are owned by the company founders or their families and heirs or by a small group of investors.
Sometimes employees also hold shares of private companies.[2][page needed] Most small businesses are privately held.
Subsidiaries and joint ventures of publicly traded companies (for example, General Motors' Saturn Corporation), unless shares in the subsidiary itself are traded directly, have characteristics of both privately held companies and publicly traded companies.
Such companies are usually subject to the same reporting requirements as privately held companies, but their assets, liabilities, and activities are also included in the reports of their parent companies, as required by the accountancy and securities industry rules relating to groups of companies.
Private companies may be called corporations, limited companies, limited liability companies, unlimited companies, or other names, depending on where and how they are organized and structured.
In the United States, but not generally in the United Kingdom, the term is also extended to partnerships, sole proprietorships or business trusts.
Each of these categories may have additional requirements and restrictions that may impact reporting requirements, income tax liabilities, governmental obligations, employee relations, marketing opportunities, and other business obligations and decisions.
In many countries, there are forms of organization which are restricted to and are commonly used by private companies, for example, the private company limited by shares in the United Kingdom (abbreviated Ltd) or unlimited company and the proprietary limited company (abbreviated Pty Ltd) or unlimited proprietary company (abbreviated Pty) in South Africa and Australia.
Privately held companies generally have fewer or less comprehensive reporting requirements and obligations for transparency, via annual reports, etc.
than publicly traded companies do.
For example, in the United States, unlike in Europe[where?], privately held companies are not generally required to publish their financial statements.
By not being required to disclose details about their operations and financial outlook, private companies are not forced to disclose information that may potentially be valuable to competitors and can avoid the immediate erosion of customer and stakeholder confidence in the event of financial duress.
Further, with limited reporting requirements and shareholder expectations, private firms are afforded a greater operational flexibility by being able to focus on long-term growth rather than quarterly earnings.
In addition, private company executives may steer their ships without shareholder approval, allowing them to take significant action without delays.[3][4] In Australia, Part 2E of the Corporations Act 2001 requires that publicly traded companies file certain documents relating to their annual general meeting with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
There is a similar requirement for large proprietary companies, which are required to lodge Form 388H to the ASIC containing their financial report.
In the United States, private companies are held to different accounting auditing standards than are public companies, overseen by the Private Company Counsel division of FASB.(see external links) Researching private companies and private companies' financials in the United States can involve contacting the Secretary of State for the state of incorporation (or for LLC or partnership, state of formation), or using specialized private company databases such as Dun & Bradstreet.
Other companies, like Sageworks, provide aggregated data on privately held companies, segmented by industry code.[5] Privately held companies also sometimes have restrictions on how many shareholders they may have.
For example, the U.S.
Securities Exchange Act of 1934, section 12(g), limits a Privately held company, generally, to fewer than 2000 shareholders, and the U.S.
Investment Company Act of 1940, requires registration of investment companies that have more than 100 holders.
In Australia, section 113 of the Corporations Act 2001 limits a Privately held company to fifty non-employee shareholders.
A privately owned enterprise is a commercial enterprise that is owned by private investors, shareholders or owners (usually collectively, but they can be owned by a single individual), and is in contrast to state institutions, such as publicly owned enterprises and government agencies.
Private enterprises comprise the private sector of an economy.
An economic system that 1) contains a large private sector where privately run businesses are the backbone of the economy, and 2) business surplus is controlled by the owners, is referred to as capitalism.
This contrasts with socialism, where industry is owned by the state or by all of the community in common.
The act of taking assets into the private sector is referred to as privatization.
A privately owned enterprise is one form that private property may take.
Matchroom Sport is a sporting event promotions company founded by English entrepreneur Barry Hearn and his son Eddie Hearn.
It first came to attention in the sports of snooker and boxing and is also involved in pool, bowling, golf, fishing, darts, table tennis, poker and gymnastics.
The company is based in Brentwood, Essex.[1] Matchroom has a comprehensive broadcasting agreement in the United Kingdom with Sky Sports.
Matchroom Sport entered snooker event management in the 1980s.
They had players such as Steve Davis, Dennis Taylor, and Jimmy White under contract.
Matchroom expanded into other cue sports, organising a World Professional Pool Championship for nine-ball pool in Cardiff, Wales, in July 1999.
The following year, that tournament merged with the annual WPA World Nine-ball Championship, the most prestigious professional tournament, under the auspices of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).
Matchroom remains a principal sponsor and even organizer.
Matchroom's other prestigious pool event is the Mosconi Cup, held each December from 1994 onwards.
The event is modelled on the Ryder Cup in golf, and pits a team of European players against a team from the United States.
Since 2003, the event has alternated between European and American venues, having previous always been held in the UK.
The Mosconi Cup is notable for having evolved from an exhibition event in the early years, into a genuinely prestigious tournament.
Early Mosconi Cup contests were characterised by a team of some of America's most charismatic players taking on a European team of mainly British snooker players, in an attempt to promote nine-ball in the UK.
More recent instances of the event have been fought in a much more serious manner, although the raucous crowd atmosphere has been retained, making it unique among cue sports competitions.
Matchroom Sports also promote the World Cup of Pool, a national team scotch doubles event, and the World Pool Masters an annual nine-ball event.[2] Matchroom has been involved in a revival of the sport of ten-pin bowling which has given the sport a renewed international pop-culture interest.
With a roster of the world's three major bowling events – the World Tenpin Masters, the Weber Cup and the AMF World Cup – Matchroom Sport has established a successful formula for presenting televised bowling.

Blackball (pool) (sometimes written black ball), also known as reds and yellows and English eight-ball, is a pool game originating in the United Kingdom and popularized across Europe and The Commonwealth, such as Australia and South Africa.
In the UK and Ireland it is usually called simply "pool".
The game is played with sixteen balls (a cue ball and fifteen usually unnumbered object balls) on a small (6 ft × 3 ft or 7 ft × 3 ft 6 in) pool table with six pockets.
Blackball is a standardized version of the English version of eight-ball.
The two main sets of playing rules are those of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), known as "blackball rules", and the older code of the World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF), often referred to as "world rules".
American-style eight-ball arose around 1900.
In 1925, the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company began offering ball sets specifically for the game using seven unnumbered yellow and seven red balls (in contrast to the numbered stripes and solids found in most pool ball sets), a black ball (numbered "8" or unnumbered), and the white cue ball; these are also known as "casino style" and were introduced to make it easier for spectators to identify the two sets.[1][2][3][4] The ball sets typically range from 2 inches (50.8 mm) up to 2 3⁄16 inches (56 mm), often with a slightly smaller cue ball, e.g.
1 7⁄8 inches (47.6 mm) for a 2-inch set.
The most common sized sets on the market are 2 inches and 21⁄8 inches (54 mm).
Along with the single white cue ball, plain unnumbered red (or sometimes blue[5]) and yellow colour balls, seven of each colour, are used in lieu of the numbered solids and stripes common to international eight-ball and other pool games.
Many (especially North American) suppliers refer to the yellows-and-reds sets as "casino" balls, whether UK- or US-sized, because they were formerly used in US casino-hosted, televised, modified-rules eight-ball tournaments popular in the 1970s; the coloured rather than numbered sets were selected for their distinguishability on TV.
The black ball, however, still typically bears a number "8" (a holdover from kelly pool), though numberless variants are not unknown.
British pool tables come in 6 × 3 foot (1.8 × 0.9 m) or 7 × 3.5 ft (2.12 × 1.06 m) varieties,[6] with 7 feet being the regulation size for league play.
The table has pockets just larger than the balls and rounded, as in the game of snooker, whereas the international-style (or "American-style") table has pockets significantly wider, with pointed knuckles.
Tournament rules may require the presence of more than one type of rest (mechanical bridge), as in snooker.
There are two competing standards bodies that have issued international rules.
The older of the two sets in British-style pool are the World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF) rules (often called "World Rules").[7] The majority of WEPF members come from the UK and Ireland, and from current and former Commonwealth of Nations countries, plus a few leagues elsewhere.
A competing but very similar set of rules has been promulgated by the larger World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA), under the game name "blackball" to better distinguish it from the American-style game (for which the WPA also promulgates the world-standardised rules).[5] It was intended that "blackball" would unify the various existing British-style rulesets (presumably also including the WEPF rules) although this has not yet happened.
The governing body for WPA blackball in Europe, with numerous national and local affiliate groups, is the European Blackball Association (EBA).
The older World Eightball Pool Federation rules pre-date the WPA blackball rules, and remain popular as amateur league rules in the UK, Ireland, Australia, some other Commonwealth countries, and a few European nations.
World rules are no longer played at the professional level, since the International Professional Pool Association (IPA) swapped to WPA blackball rules in 2012 [8] Locally the WEPF rules (or minor variants thereof) are sometimes referred to as "British standard pool", "Irish standard pool", etc.
As of 2014[update], WEPF leagues exist in: Australia, Belgium, China, Cyprus, France, India, Japan, Malta, Morocco, New Zealand, Ireland, Reunion Island, South Africa, and the UK (with separate leagues in the Channel Islands, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).[9] The balls are racked with the black (the 8 ball) on the foot spot (or "black spot"), in contrast with US-style eight-ball, nine-ball and most other pool games, in which the apex ball is placed on the foot spot.
A "fair break" is one in which an object ball is potted, and/or at least 4 object balls contact the cushion.
If the black is potted, the game is restarted with a re-rack, broken by the original breaker.
If the cue ball is potted on an otherwise fair break, it is a "non-standard" fault (foul) that simply ends the breaker's turn, with no further penalties.
If it is a foul (non-fair) break, the incoming player gets two visits as with other "standard fouls" (see below), and gets to break, after a re-rack, without the option to instead play the balls as they lie.
Openness of the table (unlike in the American-style game) does not last long, in that if the breaker pots a ball on the break from one group, and elects to continue shooting that group, then that group are his/her balls-on, even if the post-break follow-up shot is missed, while if the group chosen did not have any balls potted on the break, the table remains open until a ball is legally potted.
If no balls were potted on the break, the table remains open.
The shooter must nominate what group they are shooting for on the shot following the break if they had potted a ball off the break.
A legal (non-break) shot is one where the cue ball first hits a "ball-on" (one of the balls in the player's own group), and does not pot the cue ball, the black or any of the balls in the opponent's group, and either one of the shooter's balls-on is pocketed, or a (any) ball contacts a cushion after the cue ball contacts the (first) ball-on.
I.e., it is the same as in American-style, but with the additional requirement that one not sink an opponent's ball (doing so is a fault), and lacking the requirement that ball and pocket have to be called (i.e.
slop shots are perfectly valid, even on the black.) There are other forms of fault, generally the same as in other pool games, such as potting the cue ball (except on the break, as noted above), knocking balls off the table, moving balls accidentally, double-hits and pushes (though the standards are weaker than in American-style rules[citation needed]), unsportsmanlike conduct, etc.
There are also other unique fouls such as the requirement (borrowed from snooker) to shoot away from any ball that the cue ball is frozen to, without moving it; however if the frozen ball is the shooter's own, it counts as contacting a ball-on, and only a (any) ball must reach a rail for it to be a legal shot.
As in informal American bar pool, but not WPA/BCA/IPT standardised American-style rules, players are sometimes required to take certain shots (besides the break shot) from baulk or "the kitchen", i.e.
from behind the baulk line (head string).
Also, all deliberate jump shots that result in missing an intervening ball are faults.
After a fault, the offending player will effectively miss a turn and give the opponent two visits.
These free shots must be taken from where the cue ball finished after their opponents foul, with two exceptions: the cue ball was potted, in which case the incoming player must take their shot from baulk; or the incoming player has been left in a foul snooker, in which case they may nominate a free ball, move the cue ball to baulk and play from there or indeed carry on as normal (i.e.
shoot at one of their own balls).
Blackball rules are somewhat similar in gameplay to (though worded differently from) the WEPF World Rules.
Notable differences are: Unlike in World Rules, deliberate fouls are illegal in Blackball.
"The skill shot".
Blackball Rules enable an opponent's ball be potted legally at any time during the frame—provided one of your own colours is also potted during the same shot, this is called a skill shot and is illegal in World Rules.
After a foul in Blackball Rules, the incoming player has one free shot (they may accept the cue ball in-position as it lies on the table, or take cue ball in-hand, and place it in baulk) where they may legally play any ball.
Following the free shot, the player will have one visit remaining regardless of the free shot outcome.
This is unlike World Rules whereby, following a foul the incoming player will have two visits that carry and can only move the cueball in the case of a foul snooker.[10] Both the World Pool-Billiard Association (with PPPO and EBA) and the World Eightball Pool Federation currently sanction a World Championship, the WPA version is held every other year.
The 2014 WPA World Blackball Champion is Claudio Cassar from Malta, and the 2014 WEPF Eightball Pool World Champion is Tom Cousins from Wales.
A Wave pool is a swimming pool in which there are artificially generated, reasonably large waves, similar to those of the ocean.
Wave pools are often a major feature of water parks, both indoors and outdoors, as well as some leisure centres.
The origins of Wave pools go as far back as the 19th century, as famous fantasy castle builder Ludwig II of Bavaria electrified a lake to create breaking waves.
In 1905, the "Undosa" swimming platform was built on Lake Starnberg in Germany, which used large pontoons to force the lake water to make waves.
It has since been converted into a restaurant.
In 1912, the "Bilzbad" in Radebeul, Germany was the first public Wave pool built on the ground.[1] It used a wave machine, also called "Undosa," first exhibited the previous year at the International Hygiene Exhibition in Dresden.[2][3] It still operates.
Another early public Wave pool was designed and built in 1927[4] in Budapest, Hungary in the known Gellért Baths, and appeared one of James A.
Fitzpatrick's documentary Traveltalks films about the city in 1938, as one of the main tourist attractions.[5] It remains open.
The natatorium at Bayocean, Oregon also had an early wave-generating machine, before it was destroyed by natural ocean waves in 1932.
In 1929, a Pathe Pictorial there is film of "Indoor Surfers" frolicking in small, artificially-generated waves in a swimming pool in Munch, Germany.
The waves were created by agitators which pushed waves through the diving area and into a shallow area - where kids were bodysurfing little waves: "This is the new kind of swimming bath that is becoming the rage of Germany," one of the captions reads.
"No more placid waters for bathers - the mechanism behind the netting keeps everything moving."[6] In 1939, a public swimming pool in Wembley, London, was equipped with machines that created wavelets to approximate the soothing ebb and flowing motion of the ocean.
In the 1940s, Palisades Amusement Park, located on the Hudson River Palisades across from New York City, installed a large waterfall at one end of its salt water pool, the largest of such in the world at the time,[7] which generated small waves much like those in Wembley.
In 1966, Akiruno, Japan's "Summerland Wavepool", nicknamed the "Surf-a-Torium", was the first Wave pool accessible to surfers (though only for 15 minutes every hour).[1] Several locations claim to have developed the first Wave pool in the United States, including Big Surf in Tempe, Arizona and Point Mallard Park in Decatur, Alabama, which both opened in 1969.
The first indoor Wave pool in the United States opened in 1982 at the Bolingbrook Aquatic Center in Bolingbrook, Illinois.[8] In or around 2018 many Wave pools opened.[9] The most famous is Kelly Slater's Wave pool in California.
Previous claims that Wave pools use fossil fuel and are bad for the environment are not completely accurate.
Point Mallard Park Wave pool in Decatur Alabama receives its power from TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) via Decatur Utilities, which for this location power is generated via Nuclear Reactor at Browns Ferry and Wheeler Dam Hydroelectric plant.[10] Wave pools replicate the movement of the ocean one of two ways, depending on the size of the pool and the size of wave desired.
In small Wave pools, pressurized air is blown onto the surface of the water, or a paddle creates force in the water, creating small ripple-like waves.
Other techniques utilize an "accordion mechanism" which opens and closes in order to suck water into its belly (opening) and push it out (closing) to cause waves.
However, in high-volume Wave pools, a large volume of water is quickly allowed into the far end of the pool, forcing the water to even out, generating a sizeable wave.
In these large Wave pools, the excess water is removed by being channeled through a return canal where it can be used again to generate another wave.
Generally, Wave pools are designed to use fresh water at inland locations, but some of the largest ones, near other seashore developments, use salt water.
Wave pools are typically larger than other recreational swimming pools and for that reason are often in parks or other large, open areas.
Some Wave pools like those at NLand are expressly designed for surfing rather than for swimming, and accordingly, create much larger waves.
Wave pools are more difficult to lifeguard than still pools as the moving water (sometimes combined with sun glare) make it difficult to watch all swimmers.
Unlike passive pool safety camera systems, computer-automated drowning detection systems do not work in Wave pools.[citation needed] The original eight-foot-deep Tidal Wave pool at New Jersey's recently re-opened Action Park cost three lives in the 1980s, and kept the lifeguards busy rescuing patrons who overestimated their swimming ability.
On the first day they officially opened their wavepool, it is said up to 100 people had to be rescued.[11] The world's largest Wave pool by area is 13,600 square metres (146,000 sq ft) and located in Bangkok's Siam Park City.[12] The largest indoor Wave pool, "Blue Thunder", is 42,000 square feet (3,900 m2) and located at World Waterpark in West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Alberta.
The world's largest artificial waves, measuring up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) in height, can be found at Siam Park in the Canary Islands.[13]
The Pool of Siloam (Arabic: بركه سلوان, Hebrew: .mw-parser-output .script-hebrew,.mw-parser-output .script-Hebr{font-size:1.15em;font-family:"SBL Hebrew","SBL BibLit","Frank Ruehl CLM","Taamey Frank CLM","Ezra SIL","Ezra SIL SR","Keter Aram Tsova","Taamey Ashkenaz","Taamey David CLM","Keter YG","Shofar","David CLM","Hadasim CLM","Simple CLM","Nachlieli",Cardo,Alef,"Noto Serif Hebrew","Noto Sans Hebrew","David Libre",David,"Times New Roman",Gisha,Arial,FreeSerif,FreeSans}בריכת השילוח, Breikhat HaShiloah) refers to a number of rock-cut pools on the southern slope of the City of David / Wadi Hilweh, considered by some archaeologists to be the original site of Jerusalem, located outside the walls of the Old City to the southeast.
The pools were fed by the waters of the Gihon Spring, carried there by two aqueducts.
The Lower Pool or "Old Pool" was historically known as Birket el Hamra, literally "the red pool".
The (Lower) Pool of Siloam was built during the reign of Hezekiah (715–687/6 BCE), to leave besieging armies without access to the spring's waters.
The pool was fed by the newly constructed Siloam tunnel.
The old Canaanite tunnel had been very vulnerable to attackers, so, under threat from the Assyrian king Sennacherib, Hezekiah sealed up the old outlet of the Gihon Spring and the Upper Pool, and built the new underground Siloam tunnel in place of the older tunnel (2 Chronicles 32:2-4).
During this period the Pool of Siloam was therefore sometimes known as the Lower Pool (Isaiah 22:9).[1] The Canaanite city had a water system by which the Gihon Spring emptied into a large open basin at its source, before being conveyed along the eastern city walls by an aqueduct that opened at several spots towards the valley below, where the water irrigated agricultural fields.
This basin is sometimes known as the Upper Pool (2 Kings 18:17, Isaiah 7:3).[1] It seems likely that during the Governorship of Nehemiah (from 445 BCE), when city had to be rebuilt after the destruction by Nebuchadnezzar from 586-87 and the return from Babylonian captivity, the pool was also known as the King's Pool (Nehemiah 2:14).
The pool was reconstructed no earlier than the reign of Alexander Jannaeus (103-76 BCE), although it is not clear whether this pool was in the same location as the earlier pool built by Hezekiah — if so, all traces of the earlier construction have been destroyed.
The pool remained in use during the time of Jesus.
According to the Gospel of John, Jesus sent "a man blind from birth" to the pool in order to complete his healing.[2] The pool has a symbolic meaning in the Gospel of John.
Jesus is the one sent by the Father (cf.
John 5:38; 8:42; 9:4; 13:20) who, in turn, sends the man blind from birth to the pool that means “Sent” (see narrative aside in John 9:7) to receive sight/insight.[3] As a freshwater reservoir, the pool would have been a major gathering place for ancient Jews making religious pilgrimages to the city.
Some scholars, influenced by Jesus commanding the blind man to wash in the pool, suggest that it was probably used as a mikvah (ritual bath).[4] However, mikvahs are usually much smaller in size, and if the pool were a mikvah, it would be the largest ever found by a substantial margin.[5] Yoel Elitzur has proposed that the pool was used for swimming rather than ritual immersion.[6] The loeer pool was rediscovered during an excavation work for a sewer in the autumn of 2004, by Ir David Foundation workers, following a request and directions given by archaeologists Eli Shukron accompanied by Ori Orbach from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.
Archaeologists Eli Shukron and Ronny Reich (working with the Israel Antiquities Authority) uncovered stone steps, and it became obvious that these steps were likely to have been part of the Second Temple period pool.
Excavations commenced and confirmed the initial supposition; the find was formally announced on August 9, 2005, and received substantial international media attention.[7][8] The excavations also revealed that the pool was 225 feet wide, and that steps existed on at least three sides of the pool.
A portion of this pool remains unexcavated, as the land above it is owned by a nearby Greek Orthodox church and is occupied by an orchard known as the King's Garden (compare Nehemiah 3:15).
The pool is not perfectly rectangular, but a soft trapezoid.
There are three sets of five steps, two leading to a platform, before the bottom is reached, and it has been suggested that the steps were designed to accommodate various water levels.
The pool is stone-lined, but underneath, there is evidence of an earlier version that was merely plastered (to help it retain water).
Coins from the reign of Alexander Jannaeus were found embedded in the plaster lining of the pool, and therefore provide a secure earliest date for the pool's (re-)construction.
The pool was destroyed and covered after the First Jewish–Roman War in the year 70.
Dating was indicated by a number of coins discovered on the stones of the patio near the pool to the north, all from the days of the Great Revolt.
The latest coin is dated with "4 years to the day of the Great Revolt", meaning the year 69.
In the years following the destruction, winter rains washed alluvium from the hills down to the valley and down the slopes of Mount Zion to the west of the pool; the pool was filled with silt layers (up to 4 m in some places) until it was covered completely.
Roman sources mention a Shrine of the Four Nymphs (Tetranymphon), a nymphaeum built by Hadrian during the construction of Aelia Capitolina in 135[9][10][11] and mentioned in Byzantine works such as the 7th-century Chronicon Paschale; other nymphaea built by Hadrian, such as that at Sagalassos, are very similar.[12] It is unlikely that this shrine was built on the site of the Second Temple Pool of Siloam, but it may have been a precursor to the Byzantine reconstruction, below.
In the 5th century, a pool was constructed at the end of the Siloam Tunnel, at the behest of Empress Aelia Eudocia.
This pool survives to the present day, surrounded on all sides by a high stone wall with an arched entrance to Hezekiah's Tunnel.
This pool is around 70 yards from the Second Temple (or Lower) Pool of Siloam, and is significantly smaller.
Until the discovery of the Second Temple pool, this pool was wrongly thought to be the one described in the New Testament and Second Temple sources.

In the context of cryptocurrency mining, a Mining pool is the pooling of resources by miners, who share their processing power over a network, to split the reward equally, according to the amount of work they contributed to the probability of finding a block.
A "share" is awarded to members of the Mining pool who present a valid partial proof-of-work.
Mining in pools began when the difficulty for mining increased to the point where it could take centuries for slower miners to generate a block.
The solution to this problem was for miners to pool their resources so they could generate blocks more quickly and therefore receive a portion of the block reward on a consistent basis, rather than randomly once every few years.[1][2][3] Mining pools may contain hundreds or thousands of miners using specialized protocols.[4] In all these schemes B {\displaystyle B} stands for a block reward minus pool fee and p {\displaystyle p} is a probability of finding a block in a share attempt ( p = 1 / D {\displaystyle p=1/D} , where D {\displaystyle D} is current block difficulty).
A pool can support "variable share difficulty" feature, which means that a miner can select the share target (the lower bound of share difficulty) on his own and change p {\displaystyle p} accordingly.
The Pay-per-Share (PPS) approach offers an instant, guaranteed payout to a miner for his contribution to the probability that the pool finds a block.
Miners are paid out from the pool's existing balance and can withdraw their payout immediately.
This model allows for the least possible variance in payment for miners while also transferring much of the risk to the pool's operator.
Each share costs exactly the expected value of each hash attempt R = B ⋅ p {\displaystyle R=B\cdot p} .
Miners earn shares until the pool finds a block (the end of the mining round).
After that each user gets reward R = B ⋅ n N {\displaystyle R=B\cdot {\frac {n}{N}}} , where n {\displaystyle n} is amount of his own shares, and N {\displaystyle N} is amount of all shares in this round.
In other words, all shares are equal, but its cost is calculated only in the end of a round.
Bitcoin Pooled mining (BPM), also known as "slush's system", due to its first use on a pool called "slush's pool', uses a system where older shares from the beginning of a block round are given less weight than more recent shares.
A new round starts the moment the pool solves a block and miners are rewarded Proportional to the shares submitted.[5] This reduces the ability to cheat the Mining pool system by switching pools during a round, to maximize profit.
Pay-per-last-N-shares (PPLNS) method is similar to Proportional, but the miner's reward is calculated on a basis of N last shares, instead of all shares for the last round.
Therefore, if the round was short enough all miners get more profit, and vice versa.
Peer-to-peer Mining pool (P2Pool) decentralizes the responsibilities of a pool server, removing the chance of the pool operator cheating or the server being a single point of failure.
Miners work on a side blockchain called a share chain, mining at a lower difficulty at a rate of one share block per 30 seconds.
Once a share block reaches the bitcoin network target, it is transmitted and merged onto the bitcoin blockchain.
Miners are rewarded when this occurs proportional to the shares submitted prior to the target block.
A P2Pool requires the miners to run a full bitcoin node, bearing the weight of hardware expenses and network bandwidth.[5][6] Geometric Method (GM) was invented by Meni Rosenfeld.[7] It is based on the same "score" idea, as Slush's method: the score granted for every new share, relatively to already existing score and the score of future shares, is always the same, thus there is no advantage to mining early or late in the round.
The method goes as follows: Generalized version of Geometric and PPLNS methods.[7] It involves new parameter: o {\displaystyle o} ("cross-round leakage").
When o = 0 {\displaystyle o=0} this becomes the Geometric method.
When o = 1 {\displaystyle o=1} this becomes a variant of PPLNS, with exponential decay instead of a step function.
Pay-Per-Share Plus (PPS+) or Full Pay-Per-Share (FPPS) are methods where the payouts from the pool include the block subsidyand a share of the transaction fees for the hashrate contributed to the network.
Multipools switch between different altcoins and constantly calculate which coin is at that moment the most profitable to mine.
Two key factors are involved in the algorithm that calculates profitability, the block time and the price on the exchanges.
To avoid the need for many different wallets for all possible minable coins, multipools may automatically exchange the mined coin to a coin that is accepted in the mainstream (for example bitcoin).[8] Using this method, because the most profitable coins are being mined and then sold for the intended coin, it is possible to receive more coins in the intended currency than by mining that currency alone.
This method also increases demand on the intended coin, which has the side effect of increasing or stabilizing the value of the intended coin.[citation needed]

While the kids may spend hours swimming in the backyard without breaking a sweat, your job is to keep your pool clean and safe for guests and family.
Your garage or pool house should be filled with pool equipment supplies that will keep your investment in a pool yielding dividends of enjoyment for years.
The primary element of your pool maintenance kit is pool pump supplies that will keep water filtered around the clock.Your pool equipment supply search/ pool pump supplies search is incomplete if you do not look for products that will make pool maintenance easier.
A pool filter timer allow pool owners to conserve energy setting the pump to work certain hours of the day, eliminating energy waste when the pool is not in use.
Once your pool is covered for the night, a strong rainstorm may pass through and fill your pool cover with water.
You can use a pool cover pump to drain dirty rain water from your cover before opening the pool for business.Newcomers to pool equipment supplies may be shocked at the number of different pool covers on the market.
Solar covers are inexpensive products that trap heat into plastic bubbles, distributing that heat gradually to keep the pool warm year-round.
Leaf nets are placed on top of traditional or solar covers to collect leaves, sticks and other debris in the autumn.
Every family should own a safety cover for the backyard pool to ensure the safety of visitors and guests.
A safety cover is a heavy-duty cover that anchors to the edges of the pool, protecting accident-prone guests from falling into the deep end of the pool. After the pool cover is removed in the morning, pool owners have to ensure that the water has been purified before the first cannonballs and dives.
A pool owner should have an automatic cleaner and a chlorine generator in his pool equipment supplies to keep water clean at all times.
An automatic cleaner will sweep the bottom of the pool and remove debris that may have gotten under the cover.
Instead of trying to find the right balance between chlorine and water, a chlorine generator can be used to dole out small amounts of chlorine to avoid burnt eyes and skin discomfort.Your pool is not complete without a set of stairs to allow easy entrance into the water.
Budget-conscious families may opt for plastic ladders and above-ground stairs that can be stored in the garage when the pool isn't in use.
Other pool owners will opt for in-pool stairs and decks that span above the water to make access easier for their guests.
Pool equipment suppliers will have all of these stairs in stock because many families opt for multiple entry options.
A pool service could help you keep your pool clean and fresh at all times.
The company could provide suggestions to help you maintain your pool year-round.
One thing every pool owner has found out is that not all pool repair kits are the same.

preventing an above ground pool leak is harder to do than simply repairing a pool liner leak.
However, if you take the time to set up rules for swimming and what can be done and not done around or in the pool, it can help protect the pool from damage and possible leaks.
As with an inground pool, the above ground pool must have rules for swimmers to follow or you could end up with leaks and other damages to the pool.
You should have rules for what can be around the pool, proper hygiene, and specific guidelines for children to follow.
Sharp Objects and PoolsYou should always stress how important it is to keep sharp objects away from the pool, as they are one of the leading causes of damages.
Many times an above ground pool leak results because someone has nicked the pool liner with something sharp.
This can be almost anything, including some pool accessories that you may have thought would be safe in the pool.
If you have a product with a vinyl pool liner, you must inspect everything that will be used in the water before allowing it.
By monitoring what is allowed in or near the water, you can help prevent a leak from occurring.
Proper HygieneSome people have a hard time telling others that they cannot go into a swimming pool because they have long fingernails or toenails, but they can cause a rip in the pool liner.
Actually, toenails are quite often the cause of rips to the bottom liner.
The above ground pool leak can be caused when someone is clinging to the side of the pool and supporting themselves with their feet.
The toenail can dig into the liner and cause a rip, which will become a leak over time.
Make sure that everyone understands the rules before swimming in the above ground pool, and you will never have to worry about a hygiene related accident occurring.
Pools and KidsKids love to swim and frolic around in a pool.
An above ground pool leak can occur if they get to rough and have toys in the pool though.
If children swim in your pool, there should be rules for behavior to protect the pool liner from leaks.
If you explain that damage can occur from rough play or some misuse of toys in the water, then you could prevent rips in the pool liner.
Protecting your pool is important if you want to prevent leaks and save yourself a lot of time and money in the future.preventing an above ground pool leak is something that all pool owners want.
However, in order to do this you must have some guidelines in place just as you would to prevent an inground pool leak.
Everyone that swims in the pool should have proper hygiene and keep sharp objects away.
If the rules are not followed, you could see more pool liner repairs than you would with the guidelines in place.
Always try to prevent issues and problems with the pool so that you can enjoy swimming for the entire season and just a week or two.

We have been analysing piles of customer reviews over the years and have identified 8 common problems that customers have had when dealing with pool builders in Melbourne.Problem 1: Poor customer service.
Poor communication is one of the biggest problems for customers that are buying a pool.
When there are some issues, no one return their calls or update customers on the progress.
As a result, many customers feeling left out and situation gets hopeless since nobody wants to help to solve the problem.
There are also many stories of a careless attitude among some of the pool companies in Melbourne.
No one wants to take responsibility for damaged property or material.
Problem 2: Subcontractors (sometimes not licensed).
Many pool construction companies sub-contract the work out to non-licensed people that sometimes are very unprofessional and unorganized.
Customers sometimes complain about rude behavior from subcontractors and that they are rarely on time.Always ask your pool builder if they use subcontractors.
And if they do, make sure these subcontractors are professional and qualified for the job.Problem 3: Didn't follow deadlines.
This is a common issue that happens to many customers.Sometimes delays can be caused from bad weather and sometimes it's from poorly organised projects.
Some minor delays can be okay if the pool builder keeping customers informed. You have the right to know what's going on in all stages of the construction process.Problem 5: Workers broke stuff or left a mess.
We have heard countless of customers witnessing a mess after the pool has been built.Make sure to include a paragraph in the contract that highlights yours and the pool builder's responsibility to clean up the construction site after job has been finished. Also ask if there are any hidden fees that you need to be aware of.Problem 6: Cost ended up higher than expected.
This can be caused by several factors.
Sometimes it's the excavation that takes longer then expected. Most pool contractors wont set a fixed price for the excavation because there are so many factors involved that can affect the cost.Other times there are hidden fees that customers miss to recognise in the contract.
Problem 7: Unprofessional.
Stay away from unprofessional pool companies that have poor knowledge about pool building.Only choose pool builders that have been in the industry for a long time.Have a look if they are members of the Swimming Pool And Spa Association (SPASA) of Victoria. This will increase your chances of dealing with a professional pool builder that is serious about their business and reputation.Problem 8: No flexibility and options if you want something different.
Some pool contractors are not very flexible if customers want to make some changes during the construction process. If you choose a pool service only based on the price, don't be surprised if you get a simple pool of the shelf made of inferior materials.Customers often want a wide range of options for their pool, which some pool builders simply can't offer.Make sure you discuss these requests before you chose a pool builder to work with. You don't want this type of problems in the middle of the construction process.
After a long career in the software industry, during which I also successfully rehabbed and resold several residential projects as well as an entire small (6000 sq ft) commercial building and a Best-of-Denver award-winning restaurant, I am focused now entirely on real estate in the greater Denver area and Morrison in particular. At present I have four projects underway at once, which is a little too much for my capital and experience levels.
I am looking for one or more partners for these and future projects.
I had a tenant request a certificate of Rent for their own taxes.
I haven't been able to find anything about that, any guidance would be appreciated.
Maybe it’s the 8 bags of shock I’ve been exposed to over the last two days that’s “inspired” me to right this post, but either way, I know I’m not the only one with the looming feeling investors might face this time of year.
“Should I buy a house that has a pool?” Create an account today to get BiggerPocket's best blog articles delivered to your inboxIn places like Arizona, we might look at things a little differently, (ie, any relief from the scorching desert is a plus!) If you’re in the midwest, having a pool might mean different costs and value.
But, let’s look at the pros and cons of purchasing a rental or flip that has a pool.
I’ve seen my share of distressed properties, and I guess after awhile, I feel like a Ghostbuster walking through freshly-minted foreclosures.
(“I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!!”) This comes with the exception of pools, though.
A dark green pool may be hiding years of neglect, bad siding, algae, and who knows what else.
It can be difficult to estimate what pool repairs may be needed, and if you have say, 20 minutes to do a full inspection of the house, the "ifs" of a range of $50-$5,000 can swing your margins in the red quickly.
If the home is a short sale, the pool may be sitting for months longer and cost more than you initially estimated, as well.
If you have longer to get an inspection, and a pool person is able to give you an estimate on getting the pool back in working condition, then the initial costs may be worth the investment.
However, there’s further things to consider.
Much of this might be negated if you're flipping the property.
Similar to a fireplace in a warm-weather state building in more value (go figure!), a pool may add extra attraction to your property as well.
It's advisable not to ever add the pool yourself, since dollar for dollar you will never re-coop even your costs.
However, if there are matching houses and one has a pool, the one with the extra amenity may help you procure a buyer that much faster, therefore decreasing your holding time and/or increasing your sales price.
I know many investors out there wouldn’t touch a pool with a 6′ pole (or a skimmer, I suppose!), but others find it to be a draw as a rental or a flip.
What do you think? Is it worth the risk and added cost or do you stay far away from homes with a liquid headache in the backyard? Photo:propertysnaps
Tenant owned 3 foot Walmart type pool.
Do you allow them or take a razor to the side? We just bought a tenant occupied rental and there is a preexisting pool that is not part of the property.
Our solution was to write in an addendum freeing us from all liability and matiness of the pool.
Agents and investors, is a in ground pool a plus or minus to potential buyers in the Seattle area in general? It's an entry level house (sub 500k) with moderate size lot (~6,000 sf).
The pool literally takes more than half of the back yard for the particular house I am looking at.Personally I think a pool in this area is more of a burden - it only gets used for 2 months each year.
I have a 10 percent interest in a nice apt complex in an upscale part of Milwaukee.
We have run 97% occupancy for several years and so have competing properties.
It is in great shape.
Our property manager has suggested some changes.
I need to find out what an appropriate Return On Investment would be for this type of property since we have had it for many years and it is at 25%LTV.
Any help greatly appreciated!

The cost as a rental is about the same as without because I should be able to get an extra $100/month for the pool but I have to pay a pool guy to maintain it.What do you all think?
When I think of the things most people are afraid of, lots of stuff comes to mind: Untimely death of a loved one, heavy objects falling from above, bears, sharks, terrorism, the list goes on.
When you ask average people what they’re afraid of, you tend to get responses along those lines.
The problem is, most people have fears that are not at all proportionate with their real-life risks.Create an account today to get BiggerPocket's best blog articles delivered to your inboxMany more Americans die from opioids than terrorism (in fact, one recent study puts the body count from the opioid crisis on par with the occurance of a 9/11-level terrorist event—occurring once every three weeks).
By the same token, shark attacks kill a fraction of the people annually that swimming pools do.
And I’m willing to bet many more of our readers have a medicine cabinet or a swimming pool right now than have ever been anywhere near a terrorist or a deadly shark. The truth isn’t always comforting, but it’s the truth.
You’re way more likely to die from the things around you.
Most of us own or at least ride in cars—so the odds are substantially higher that we’ll die from a car accident than some type of bear encounter gone horribly wrong.
The same is true for those of us investors that own pools, only the risk is magnified.
The wonderful world of liability means that even if you’re not personally at risk of drowning in your own swimming pool, you could still be at risk of losing everything if someone (and we mean literally anyone does).
But don’t slam your hand down on the panic button just yet: there are ways to own property with a pool and minimize your liability / lawsuit risk.Related: 6 Smart Strategies for Limiting Liability as a LandlordWe’re not here to trash swimming pools altogether.
They’re attractive on properties, and renters actually look for them because above all else, they’re fun.
But the reality is, there’s very little fun you can have in this world without risk.
You must be aware that just like you’re responsible for the housing you are rent out, you are equally responsible for the pool.Because you’re a smart investor, and a swimming pool is an investment, we assume you’re going to be willing to do what you need to do to protect that investment.
The reality is, there are two primary ways things can go really wrong for you as an owner of a property with a pool.•Your Pool Violates Local Laws Every jurisdiction has local safety laws governing how pools must function—and possibly how they should look.
You need to be in 100 percent compliance with these laws, or you could end up on the receiving end of a gnarly law suit.
When you’re in violation of local laws, any little injury from a slip on up to a drowning death is considered your fault because of a concept known as strict liability.•Your Pool is Declared Unsafe This has less to do with following the law to a T, and more to do with common-sense safety standards.
For instance, if the markers on your pool read “3 feet” but the pool is actually thirty feet deep, your pool could easily be deemed unsafe.
In this case, it may also be in violation of local law—but the point is that it’s an obvious safety hazard. Now that we’ve established the two ways pool owners are at risk, here are a couple of examples about how these types of suits often go down.At your hot rental property in West Filthy Rich Beach, Florida, your tenants are tying one on for the 4th of July.
All is well: friends are over, the barbecue is going, and the booze is flowing freely.
They’re enjoying gathering around the 15-feet-deep pool and getting their feet wet.
The crowd is growing.
The two tenants had originally invited a few other couples over to hang out, and one of those guests brought a tag-along guest whom we’ll call “Dim Danny.” Dim Danny decides the time has come to do a kegstand on the diving board.
Despite protests from your tenants, Danny goes to town and turns your diving board into some justifiably deleted scene from American Pie, then promptly tumbles over and falls into the pool, busting his lip on the way down and breaking his wrist as he drunkenly fails to protect himself. Here’s where you could be screwed as a matter of law.
West Filthy Rich Beach is a made-up place, but because local laws can be downright silly, let’s just pretend that there’s a law on the books there that regulates diving boards to permit them only for pools with more than 40 feet of depth.
It doesn’t matter if you inherited the diving board from a previous owner.
You’re caught in the sticky legal spiderweb of strict liability.
That means that even though you didn’t install the diving board and Danny was being a total dumbass, you’re still on the hook. Now the law in this state (in reality) requires your pool be kept in “reasonably safe conditions” for anyone invited over, even by the tenant.
The reason or occasion doesn’t matter.
Even though you didn’t invite Dim Danny over to the pool, the injuries are still on you.You were happy to rent out your duplex in Austin, Texas to a young family.
The property has a pool that varies in depth from 12 to 15 feet.
Your tenants, a married couple, happen to have two children: an 8-year-old and a toddler.
They’re decent people, and they’ve even been taking their oldest to swimming lessons. The family decides to break in the pool on their second weekend in the home.
Both children are slathered in sunscreen, and the little one is given water wings for good measure.Mom reads the pool markings for the first time, and feels it’s safe to place the toddler in the section labeled 12”.
After all, twelve inches is barely any water, and the kid has floaties on.
The 8-year-old happily dives in the deep end and takes a lap.
As Mom is checking to see if Dad is joining in on the fun, the toddler starts to struggle to stay afloat.
And so far, he’s the only one who knows that the water is 12 feet deep, not 12 inches.
The only difference in the signage is an apostrophe, and Mom didn’t think to question it.
To make matters worse, the water wings aren’t fully inflated, so Danger Baby begins to sink until his head is partially submerged.Related: Should You Invest in Homes with a Pool?Fortunately, Mom is vigilant enough to see her little one starting to sink, and fishes him out of the water, but not before he’s managed to breathe some of it in.
She calls an ambulance and he’s rushed to the emergency room. The baby is fine, but you’re immediately hit up to pay the costly ER bill.
