The theme that I chose to use for my site has not only personal meaning, but also reflects my idea of how I want my students to view themselves. For as long as I can remember, I have always been one to dream. For anyone who knows me, I LOVE the movie Star Wars. I have a love of stars, planets, and beyond. I am in awe and amazement at the vastness of our galaxy and the possibility of the infinity that we will never know. I guess you could say I have my head in the clouds. So having a theme with stars seems to be quite fitting.
As for relating this theme to my students, there are countless billions of stars out in the galaxy and beyond, more than we will ever see. Each star is different; some shine quite a bit and others, not so much. A student is like a star. Some students shine very brightly in the classroom, wowing us with their abilities. Some students 'hide' and do not give off much light, have a quiet personality and limited social skills. Because of the endless possibilities of who you may end up having in your classroom, all students need and deserve to have the chance to show what they can do and to 'shine'.
In my future classroom, I want my students to always have the same opportunities as everyone else to be successful, regardless of their ability. I want my students to celebrate their differences and learn to appreciate diversity. I feel that all students need to be encouraged to do their best and to grow into productive, competent citizens. All students need to be held to the same level of commitment: it should always be to give 100% effort or do it again. It does not mean that the student will get 100%, but that they tried their hardest.
