Mr. Brazeau -- H226
Welcome,
Political Science is a course designed to build upon your vast array of knowledge you acquired in seventh grade civics, and move towards application of that understanding to becoming educated participants in modern democratic practices. Throughout this term you will be asked to seek out information and ideas about our system of government, present that information, and analyze those ideas to help you formulate meaningful arguments about the consequences of those events and ideas.
What does that all really mean? In this class you will interact with information that you read in and outside of class, discuss with your classmates, and work to help you understand how our system of government works. You will examine the electoral college, the compromise idea that has made our system flexible and work for so long, as well as an in-depth analysis of the candidates seeking the highest office in the land in the upcoming November Election.
It is my intention to help you become more informed citizens who are going to actively participate in the democratic process. Right now is a great time to be a citizen in the United States, and is an amazing time to be a student of government. We will look at ways to participate in government from the obvious voting in elections that unfortunately many eligible voters choose fail to do, to the many other methods of having a voice in our system. Wisconsin recently held a historic recall election that demonstrated some of the safeguards put in place by our founding fathers. We will examine the soundbites of the candidates as they work towards their goal of being elected. We will dissect the information to examine not only what they said, but what they didn't say in order to understand their views and the implications of their policies.
Throughout this course there will be discussions, and at times there may even be heated debate over issues and ideas. It is my intention to allow for your ability to freely express your ideas and opinions as long as you remember others have the same rights, and that we are respectful and appropriate with our ideas.
I have my own personal views on the issues that will be discussed this election year, I have developed these from my own personal experiences and study of history, politics, and society. While I am passionate about politics and the impact that certain laws and decisions can and have had on our lives, it is not my intention to persuade you to hold my values or beliefs. You are free to express your ideas. At times we will agree, at times we will disagree, and that is the wonderful lesson of American Democracy, we are able to express our ideas openly and honestly.
