8th Grade Computer Technology
This one-trimester class meets daily and begins with a reintroduction to touch-typing. The state’s standard for students is to be able to type at a rate of 25 words per minute or more with 5 or fewer mistakes, by the end of eighth grade. Students will work all semester with blogging on a school-run, private (password protected) blog. Students are expected to use proper English grammar, spelling and punctuation while answering thought-provoking questions in a well-written paragraph. The idea behind blogging is to get the students ready for longer, more thought-out writing assignments, do more typing and practice their online etiquette and safety. Blogging continues daily through the entire trimester. Excel is delved into quite extensively. Formatting and the use of formulas and charts are explored. After a lengthy unit on Excel, students begin exploring the world of HTML and website creation. One goal is to recreate one of their excel sheets through coding and embed it into their own website. Other programs will be explored and students will learn to embed audio and video into their sites. As with all student online participation, safety is explored and reinforced at all times.
