6th Grade Computer Technology
This one-trimester class meets daily and starts off by introducing students to the basics of computing. Keyboarding is introduced with the use of online typing exercises. The goal is for students to become familiar with proper hand placement and seating posture. Students are taught how to use their school Gmail and Google Drive accounts. They are also introduced to the varied formatting capabilities of Microsoft Word. The purpose for this in-depth formatting unit is that many teachers and businesses require documents be created using this program and though students are very savvy when it comes to the technology they use socially, more often than not, they are not so when it comes to producing quality documents. Keyboard shortcuts are taught and practiced. Most cross many platforms, meaning once learned, they can be used in non-Microsoft applications and programs. There are a number of additional programs and applications which are explored, but not in depth. Students will spend time learning the basics behind coding. They have access to programs that are self-paced and very fun. As with all student online participation, safety is explored and reinforced at all times.
