Team Drills
Talk loud drill
Must talk about every ball throughout the drill at all time or have penalty.
May pull player out of the drill to be the talker for every player.
Queen of the court
3 on 3
Serve receive side is winner's side.
If server misses only she is off.
Whoever wins rally stays or goes to winner's side.
Can only earn individual points if already on the winner's side.
No points for missed serves.
2 vs 2 Queens - Two Touches
Played just like queens but players only get two touches per side.
Great for practicing out of system.
Dog House
Like queens but winners go off and losers go to serve receive side to be in the dog house.
Can only get out of dog house if win rally.
Serving side can earn points. Cannot earn points when getting out of dog house
Play & Go
4 players - 1 Setter at net, 3 hitters (can rotate people in if you have more than 4 on a team)
Every time player touches ball must run & touch end line
Rotate after every ball that goes over net.
Cooperative - goal "x" number of crosses over net
Family Feud
Scramble – Great for lots of kids in gym!
4 or 5 on a team
Each team rotates after every time they get the ball over net
If a team loses rally, they are off and new team scrambles on
New team always gets free ball that is being tossed as team comes on.
Remember where you left – start there when you go back on!
Keep track of points of won rallys.
3 vs 6 Queen of the court
3 side always serves
If 3 side wins, they stay & get point & front row of 6 side rotates off & back row moves up & new back row comes on.
If 6 side wins front row rotates to 3 side, back row rotates up, & 3 side is off.
6 side can’t tip
Vegas
Teams play out 5 balls. (We use free or down balls to start play)
Keep track of points.
After 5 balls play an additional money ball.
Winner of the money ball banks the points earned from the first 5 rallys.
So if score is 3-2 before money ball and the team with 2 pts wins money ball the team who scored 3 loses those points and now the real score is 2-0 because the winning team only earned 2 pts in the first 5 rallies.
19-22 Drill - Great for JV vs Varsity
Varsity has 19 and JV has 22 points.
Winning team does not have a penalty.
22 pt team has the serve.
Helps focus on stopping the serve and pushing points.
26 before 6 - Also great for JV vs Varsity
Play normal rally scoring for JV. They must earn 26 points.
For Varsity they must win one serve receive then must serve two balls (winning both rallies) in a row to rotate and earn 1 big point.
Every time varsity rotates JV gets the serve back.
Practice pushing for runs of points, and keep other teams from making runs
Baseball
6 on 6 - free balls or down balls start each "up to bat"
Decide who is "visiting" side and who is "home" side.
Visiting teams gets all free balls first because they are "up to bat". Play until they have 3 side "outs".
Keep track of all "runs" scored of the batting team along with how many outs they have.
Home team bats after visitors get 3 outs.
Play for a determined number of innings.
Rally to 5, 3, 1
Regular scoring rally games to 5 pts, then 3 pts, then 1 pts.
Whoever wins the game to 5 has 1 thing to do, then whoever wins game to 3 has 3 things to do, last whoever wins game to 1 has 5 things to do.
Old School Ball
Switch things up and play old volleyball rules. Must have the serve to score!
24-all No dead Ball
Starts w/ joust between any two front row players.
Winning side gets free ball & teams play out keep giving free balls to whoever wins & keep score like normal (starting 24-24, must win by 2)
Psycho Ball
Two Teams, two balls.
Both teams serve at the same time. Object is to get the other team to side out or to kill both balls on the other teams side.
For example, Teams A & B serve at the same time. If Team B shanks the ball that A served, whoever served the ball on B's team (the team that errors) must run and serve the the ball that caused error (teammates cannot help get the ball to the server) before team A puts the ball down on B's side. So for A to earn a point A must put the ball down on B's side before team B gets the serve off again. If both teams error at the same time the servers must run and get the ball that they messed up and serve again.
Another example, both teams serve but A misses the serve and a player on A shanked the ball. So B earns a point.
After a team earns a point only that team rotates. Team that rotates 6 times wins.
Right Side Defense to Offense
Objectives:
Work on digging and transition to set for setter and right side player.
1. Coach slaps ball from box as if a RS hitter.
2. LF & MH Block, RF and Setter transition to defense.
3. Coach hits ball to either player (RS or Setter).
4. Defender digs ball.
5. Other player (RS or Setter) must set the ball outside or Middle.
6. Outside hitter hits set.
Can score by asking hitters to hit a certain position on the court.
