Blocking
Pass or Pound
Partner tosses ball to blocker standing at net.
Blocker decides if the overpass can be attacked or if she should step back and pass it to target.
Grab & Slam (Block and slam ball behind head on floor)
Blocker grabs ball from partner on chair and pulls ball back on her side and slams it behind her on floor.
Over the Shoulder Drill - Simulates ball coming over front row player's shoulder.
Blocker must judge if ball is hittable and/or then make the necessary adjustments to either hit or block based on body position and flight of ball.
Three front row players at the net, but back about 3 feet.
Three blockers on the other side, ready to hit or block.
Toss a ball from the back row, high enough that it will be a toss-up as to whether it should be hit or blocked.
Take a charge
Two blockers position themselves in front of the hitter as if they are going to take a charge in basketball.
Key is the toss to the hitter comes from behind the blockers.
Blockers must read the angle of approach of the hitter.
Get out of the hole
Two hitters stand on boxes on the other side of the net.
Blocker starts in the middle of the net.
Coach points to a hitter.
Hitter slaps ball and hits.
Blocker must get over with hands and penetrate at the net.
Blocker retreats to middle.
Repeat for a set number of stuff blocks.
Can also take coach out and just alternate back and forth and work on blocker footwork and speed off the ground. Great for conditioning!
Ball Exchanges
Player has partner on either side of the net.
Jump together and they exchange a ball back and forth.
Blocker Close
Coach tosses to passer
Passer passes ball to the setter
Blocker must make read & transition over to RS or OH (Setter can set out or back.)
Middle blocker must close the block.
Repeat for a set number of points.
Scoring: 2 points for stuff block, 1 point for control block, 1/2 point for touch.
