Specialized Course Offerings and Programs

AZVA offerings:

Honors Classes

Honors classes are available for most required academic courses. In order to be eligible for an honors course, students must have an A/B average in that subject area an their teacher's recommendation.

Students enrolled in Honors courses must submit the Honors project (or the first project, if there are multiple projects in a semester) by a specific date, communicated by the Course Teacher in the course calendar. Students who do not submit this project by this date will be removed from the honors course immediately and placed in the Comprehensive level of the course for the remainder of the semester. Students who do not earn a grade of A, B, or C in their Honors course or who do not complete all honors projects (if there are multiple projects in a semester) will be placed in the Comprehensive level of the course for the following semester.

Work Study

If you are employed then may consider taking AZVA's "Work Study" course. This course is a general work experience course that is combined with short journal assignments for class work. A Work Study student is able to earn .5 credits for 60 hours of verified employment or 1 full credit for 120 hours of verified employment. This course is pass/fail and can only be taken for a total of 1 elective credit. Students must be a continuing AZVA student in order to be eligible for the course. Students must apply and be approved in order to participate in Work Study.

Service Learning

Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Non-AZVA Opportunities:

Concurrent Enrollment Partnership Programs

AZVA high school students are permitted to enroll in Concurrent Courses through Rio Salado College or Pima Community College to earn college credit while pursuing their high school education. The course tuition and fees will be paid for by AZVA. Students must be enrolled in at least 1 AZVA course and can take up to 4 college courses per semester. Students must have a 2.0 GPA in the preceding semester and maintain that minimum GPA while participating in the program. College courses taken must align with the student's graduation plan and fulfill high school graduation requirements. Students must submit the Concurrent Enrollment Partnership Program Application to Mrs. Meeker by given deadlines for each semester in order to enroll for the program.

Concurrent Enrollment: Awarding Credit for Community College Courses

AZVA would like to provide opportunities for students to earn high school credit for community college courses independent from our partnership program or high school correspondence courses that are of specific interest, provided they meet the high academic standards of the state and AZVA. For a community college course to be considered for high school credit, the requirements listed on the pdf below must be submitted to the assigned School Counselor for Department Lead and Administration approval. Please keep in mind that students must be enrolled in at least 4 courses per semester per AZVA school policy and state attendance requirements. All the appropriate documentation must be submitted before school has begun, as approval can take up to a few weeks. If the course is approved and completed then it will be the student's responsibility to have official transcripts mailed to AZVA (including paying any fees necessary) following the course completion. Please note that AZVA is not responsible for admissions or enrollment in courses. It is the student's financial responsibility to pay for tution, fees, course materials, etc. when taking courses outside of our partnership program.

If you need to send transcripts to AZVA, please mail them to:

JTED

JTED stands for Joint Technical Education District. The State of Arizona has designated 14 JTED Programs throughout the state so that students in all parts of Arizona can take advantage of Career/Technical programs while still in high school. These programs are typically for 11th & 12th graders and take the place of taking regular electives. Some programs actually award “certificates” upon completion. Please download the Arizona JTED document at the bottom of this page, for a list of Arizona JTED programs available throughout the state.
