This is My Time - Tips for Success

Here are a few key tips to help you be successful at AZVA, using our theme.

This is My Time

· To Work Hard

o “There is no substitute for hard work” – Thomas Edison

o Create a daily schedule to help you plan your time for school. You are required to spend 1 hour per day per class.

o Designate one place in your house for your “school time”. Make this place comfortable and free from distractions so you’re able to focus and work hard.

· To Learn

o “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you” – BB King

o You are responsible for your education!

o Read the lessons and take notes. Take your time moving through the lessons. You’re not in a race. Make sure you understand each concept before moving on.

o Attend Live Classes! This is your time to meet and learn from your teachers and classmates. Be sure to review the recordings if you can’t make it to the live sessions.

· To Achieve

o “All great achievements require time” – Maya Angelou

o Do your best!

o Review the lessons and key concepts before taking quizzes and exams.

o Complete your assignments on time. Create and follow your schedule as to when and where you will work on school. Remember that all assignments that are part of a Unit will need to be completed and submitted by Sunday at midnight the week the Unit ends. Once a unit has ended the assignments in that unit will no longer be eligible for submission.

· To Grow

o “All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work” – Calvin Coolidge.

o Ask your teachers for help you when you don't understand the content or need some additional help or practice. If you don't let your teachers know when you're struggling, they don't know to help you.

o Check feedback on your assignments!

o Reach out and contact AZVA staff/teachers with questions or concerns!

· To Prepare

o “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” – Benjamin Franklin

o Read your email daily. This is the main form of communication from your teachers and the school. A great idea is to start and end your school day by reading and responding to email! You are expected to respond when contacted by a teacher (whether IM, email or Phone calls).

o Review your “Announcements” and “Course Plan” so you know what assignments and projects are due as well as when you have upcoming quizzes and tests and when the Unit will close – remember ALL assignments for the unit will close and lock on the Sunday following the Unit end date!

o Have everything you need to be successful: Working Internet and computer, a version of Word (or open office), Java downloaded on your computer, working speakers and microphone to complete assignments and attend classes.

o Have a list of your AZVA contacts (ie Advisor, Mentor, Counselor and Teachers’) name and contact phone numbers printed out and close to your computer. If you encounter tech problems you will be prepared with contact information to get help. Remember: Successful students WILL have a plan B in case of a computer crash or other technical issues.

· To Have Joy in My Accomplishments

o “Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

o Set goals and celebrate your success!

o Communicate often with your Counselor, Advisor and Teachers through email, Instant Messenger (IM), and by phone. Let us know about the different things happening in your life. We want to help you when you’re struggling and celebrate with you in your accomplishments.
