Objectives

Portugal’s privileged role in the dialogue between Europe and Asia, the century-old ties between Portugal and the Asian countries and the steady development of bilateral relations call for urgent Portuguese expertise in the area of Asian matters. The Faculty of Letters, Lisbon University, has created a most needed first degree in Asian Studies aimed at forming highly qualified experts in these fields.

This recently created degree has naturally emerged from scientific areas that have long been an object of study at the Faculty of Letters, at First-Degree, M.A. and Ph.D. levels. This degree was organised on an interdisciplinary basis and relies on the sound scientific know-how of the Faculty teaching staff and researchers.

The study of some of the several Asian languages available to students forms the core of the Degree. The languages and cultures of China and Japan, India and Malaysia and of the Asian Islamic World constitute, therefore, a strategic choice. The course units not currently part of The Faculty of Letters syllabuses will be taught by teaching staff members from other Lisbon University Faculties or even from foreign Faculties. The teaching of the Chinese language and related course units will be jointly undertaken by Lisbon University Confucius Institute and researchers from Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre (Lisbon).

This degree prepares students for a wide variety of economic, social, cultural and pedagogical activities as well as for jobs in, for instance, state and international cooperation institutions; the Diplomatic Corps; private and state-owned enterprises be it as counsellors or advisors; the mass media; and NGOs.

This degree is based on the ECTS system (each course unit = 6 ECTS) and is organised in semesters. A First Degree corresponds to 180 ECTS.
