Post date: Apr 27, 2011 1:38:47 PM
The group "Intelligent Vision Systems (IVS)" at Bonn University,
Germany, is glad to announce the opening of a PhD position on
a DFG (German Research Foundation) funded project entitled
"vision@home: Situated Vision to Perceive Object Shape and Affordances".
Project:
-------
The project is a cooperation of four universities/research centers: TU
Vienna, RWTH Aachen, IDIAP Research Institute Martigny, and University
of Bonn. The objective of the project is to provide models and
methods to detect, recognize, and categorize the 3D shape of everyday
objects and their affordances in homes. These vision capabilities
shall be used by autonomous mobile robots that operate as assistants
in home environments.
The part of the project that will be tackled in Bonn is concerned with
visual scene exploration and visual search for objects based on
cognitive perception methods. The research is located mainly in the
fields of computer vision and robotics but has also relations to
neuroscience, psychophysics, and cognitive sciences.
Your profile:
------------
You should have obtained a master (or diploma) in an appropriate area such
as computer science, electrical engineering, physics, or mathematics
and should be familiar with image processing and computer vision
techniques. Experience in robotics or machine learning are welcome.
You should have good programming skills, preferably in C++. Knowledge
of matlab and of the image processing library OpenCV is helpful.
The project has a strong background in psychophysics and cognitive
sciences; knowledge in these areas
is helpful, otherwise a strong interest and motivation to acquire such
knowledge is expected. Good knowledge of English (spoken and written)
is essential, German language skills or the willingness to learn
German will help you to enjoy your stay better. If you are also
curious, motivated, and communicative, willing to continuously learn
and improve your skills, you are a perfect candidate to join our team.
Our offer:
---------
- 3 year full-time position (ideally, the position should start in autumn
2011)
- payment according to the German Public Service Scale TV-L 13
- the opportunity to work autonomously on interesting research topics
according to international standards together with experienced researchers
Location:
--------
Bonn is nicely located at the river Rhine in the center of
Germany. The city Cologne and the low mountain area "Siebengebirge" are
just around the corner. As student city and former capital, Bonn
offers many facilities, including sports, nature, culture, and nightlife.
The University of Bonn was founded almost 200 years ago and is
considered to be one of Germany's and indeed Europe's most important
institutes of higher education. As home of learning to over 27,000
students, it enjoys an outstanding reputation both at home and abroad.
It is one of the world's leading research based Universities and has
evolved into the position of a prominent international institution.
The University of Bonn is an equal opportunity employer and as such,
considers individuals for employment according to their skills,
abilities and experience. Preference will be given to suitably
qualified women, all other considerations being equal. The same applies
to handicapped people.
Please send your electronic application (including a detailed CV,
a certificate of your latest degree including grades, a pdf of your
master thesis, and if you have already published research articles: your
publication list and a pdf of your best article)
to Simone Frintrop: frintrop@iai.uni-bonn.de. The closing date for
applications is July 4th, 2011.
Best regards,
Simone Frintrop
