Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems

Hello,

As promised from SLDS office. STATS-DC should be taking place in July 2013, but I can't seem to find info on it on the NCES website yet. Wouldn't it be nice if we could meet up with data folks from SLDS states? Meanwhile, once you gain some familiarity with their info and new questions arise, please let me know. I can try to arrange for a second phone call with them.

Cheers,

Hiromi

Good morning,

Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to speak with researchers using (and trying to use) the state administrative data stored in statewide longitudinal data systems. As we work with states on data use and data use policies, it is helpful to know the concerns and challenges that researchers and other data users may face when trying to access, interpret, and analyze these data.

In this email, please find the resources we discussed on Friday’s call. These include websites, Resource Guides, and SLDS Issue Briefs. I have attached the State SLDS grants by priority area (K12, Early Childhood, and Postsecondary/Workforce).

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about these documents, website, or tools. We look forward to continuing to work with you.

Best,

Nancy

Websites

The SLDS website<http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/index.asp> is: http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/

On this website, you can review states’ proposals to learn of their priorities, budgets, research and data goals, and plans for the future. Our Best Practice Briefs and Issue Briefs<http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/publications.asp> (some of which are linked directly below) are also available on this site, as are webinar presentations<http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/webinars.asp>. In the LDS Share<http://nces.ed.gov/programs/slds/LDSShare/SLDS.aspx> (located under Best Practices Resources), you also can see state-created and -shared resources, including state data sharing agreements and MOUs.

The CEDS website<https://ceds.ed.gov/Default.aspx> is: https://ceds.ed.gov/

Here, you can learn more about the CEDS standard and tool kit. “Published maps<https://ceds.ed.gov/ReportWizard.aspx>” in the Align<https://ceds.ed.gov/align.aspx> tool shows you the data dictionary information for elements/variables that states have mapped to the CEDS standard and shared with the CEDS community. The Connect<https://ceds.ed.gov/connect.aspx> tool contains research and policy questions of interest to states, mapped to the CEDS elements. If you are interested in creating new Connections for the tool, please first create an account<https://ceds.ed.gov/createAccount.aspx>, which will then enable you to create Connections directly. (You do not need to create an account in order to suggest a Connection.)

The PTAC website<http://ptac.ed.gov/> is: http://ptac.ed.gov/

PTAC provides technical assistance to SEAs, LEAs, and institutions of higher education on the privacy, security, and confidentiality of public records. On this site, you can find guidance on data sharing and FERPA, among other related topics.

Resource Guides

There are extremely valuable resource guides on data ethics and on privacy and non-disclosure produced by the NCES Forum and the NCES Statistical Standards Program. A particularly relevant Forum guide we have been helping to disseminate this past year describes what SEAs do to prepare their data for researchers and to facilitate data requests. (The LEA companion version is forthcoming.)
