Description
The Asian Liver Center at Stanford University is the first non-profit organization in the United States to address the high prevalence of hepatitis B and liver cancer in Asians and Asian Americans. Founded in 1996, the Asian Liver Center works towards its mission to end liver cancer and hepatitis B via CARE: Collaboration, Advocacy, Research, and Education/Outreach.
Our Center is spearheading the development of a bill in California that would require providers to offer voluntary hepatitis B and/or C screenings to those at risk. The selected intern will be a key team player in navigating the legislative process and organizing a major community coalition across the state of California.
Responsibilities
Identify and reach out to potential legislative authors in the California State Senate and Assembly.
Conduct correspondence with elected officials and their staff.
Identify and reach out to coalition partners. Help arrange and lead meetings.
Write briefings and communications for coalition partners, elected officials and their staff, and/or other relevant internal staff and partners.
Conduct literature review and data collection as needed in relation to the bill provisions and legislative process.
Support other areas of Asian Liver Center community and youth programming as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student. However, recent grads welcome to apply if within one year from graduation date.
You are highly motivated by challenging projects, not afraid to take initiative, and organized. You have:
A strong, demonstrated interest in health, government, and/or public policy.
One year research experience. This can include research for academic projects/papers.
Exceptional writing skills.
Strong public presentation and people skills.
Reliable transportation to local meetings as needed.
Willingness to travel to Sacramento on occasion to meet with elected officials and/or their staff.
